Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The ultimately cool British icon – we can't think of a better inexpensive summer runaround than this.

The Morris Minor is a British Classic that made its first appearance at the Earls Court Motor Show in London in 1948. This is the third series Minor known as the 1000 series in the very desirable convertible bodyshape. A broad range of colours and trim options were available which kept the car competitive and thus enable production volumes to increase and retain a significant share of the small car market.

Fitted with the newer 1098cc engine, a top speed of 73mph, producing 48bhp, combined with a revised gearbox allowed for more relaxed cruising speeds.

This "Moggie" started life as a fixed-head and was converted to a soft-top in 2003 with a bright red roof to match its interior. It's been owned and enjoyed by Paul for the past 17 years and due to moving house, Paul is looking for a like-minded Morris Minor fan to take over ownership.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I had a Minor as my first car and after coming across this example in the black and red colours, well I just couldn't resist it.

Paul has been the owner of this Morris Minor for the last years. The conversion was completed just before Paul purchased the car in 2003.

Paul has garaged the car over the years and has loved using it on hot sunny weekends. However, due to moving house, Paul is having to narrow down his eclectic collection of cars and motorbikes.

Please take a look at the history and paperwork to see the great amount of time and money that has been spent on this car over the years.

Paul will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

A very eye-catching example finished in black with fun and curvy body lines.

Wheels and Tyres

These '70s styled wheels look great, white with reflective hub caps and the Morris logo embossed. Each wheel is in good condition with a little bit of wear in places - inline with the age and mileage of the car.

Each wheel is wrapped in Firestone F-560 rubber, and each wheel seems to have plenty of life left on them.

Please take a look at the exterior photographs and videos for a full detailed tour of each wheel.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks good as a whole, when you get a little closer you notice a few areas that could do with some love. The panel gaps all look good too for a fifty-one year old British car!

As you'd expect, there are a few stone chips on the front, and the bottoms of each rear arches have a little bubbling occurring.

This car looks inline with its age and mileage and would be 'showable' with a little TLC around small parts of the bodywork.

Please take a look for yourself with the exterior photographs and videos.

Paint

The paintwork looks inline with its age and mileage. From a distance it looks very reflective and recently polished. Both doors are a little dull and has some spider web paint cracks - rather common for the Morris Minor.

The other panels appear good and even in coat and colour.

Please take a look at the exterior photos for a closer look at the paintwork on this car.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks great on this car, free from scratches, cracks or chips.

The brightwork is a similar story, generally clean and in good condition, the chrome front and back bumpers have some very minor pitting across them.

Please take a look at the exterior photos and videos.

Interior

A combination of practicality and charm inside the exceptionally smart red cabin.

Seats and Carpets

In 1964 the Morris Minors seats were upgraded to a more comfortable design. These seats look excellent.

The red leather looks free from creases, marks and is overall in excellent condition along with the dashboard and headlining.

Please take a look at the images for a roof up/down view of the cabin.

Dashboard

In 1964 the Morris Minor saw a revised dashboard, one large dial similarly found in the Austin Mini, choke and wiper toggles / switches are also fitted with a metal surround.

The dash is finished in gloss black with black leatherette around and looks really excellent, a meticulously cared for interior and clearly garaged example.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The traditional Morris steering wheel is found in this example. The steering wheel and gearstick are in excellent, original condition and in line with the car's age.

The four-speed gearbox is coupled to the 1.1L engine giving you plenty of power for any weekend roof down road trip.

Please take a look at the videos for a detailed tour of the interior of this car.

Mechanics

The improved and refined 1098cc is the engine to go for, keep up with modern-day traffic with 48bhp.

Engine and Gearbox

In 1962 the Morris Minor saw the upgraded 1.1L, 1098cc A-series inline-4 engine which became a huge success story and was also used in the MG Midget, Austin Vans and also the Mini.

Paul has had the car regularly MOT'd and serviced even though it's exempt, to keep the car mechanically up to scratch and road worthy.

Please watch the mechanical video to see me starting the car without any issues.

Suspension and Brakes

The Morris Minor had front torsion bar suspension and was shared with the larger Morris Oxford MO.

Paul reports that the suspension and brakes have always been given the attention they deserve on its yearly MOT.

Paul mentions no knocks or unusual sounds from the suspension when he has driven the car and reports that the brakes work really well.

The Drive

A comforting one, spacious and practical interior with the desirable convertible roof, this Morris minor can do it all, especially with a large boot to hold all your luggage in too.

Paul reports a great drive in this iconic '70s classic, he says it always gets lots of attention whenever he takes it out, and people love the raspy exhaust notes that take them back to their childhood.

Electrics and Other

Basic electrics as you would expect from a Series III developed in 1956. This car takes you back to the raw driving experience, so much so you won't want to get out.

Step back in time to your youth with this fun and usable desirable classic.

History and Paperwork

One of the most popular classic British saloons of all time - finished in black with a striking red interior and coming out of 17 years of loving ownership.

In 2003 the chassis was wax oil injected, a professional convertible conversion carried out, bright red hood fitted and also servo disc brakes were also fitted by Charles Ware's Morris Minor Centre.

Over Paul's ownership, he's always taken the car to his local reputable garage to have all the work and its 6,000-mile service carried out. During his ownership, this Morris Minor has had a new head gasket in 2010, a fresh underseal in 2018, and in 2020 the brakes were stripped and bled along with a full service.

Hi
I appreciate there is no requirement for an MOT but does the Minor have an MOT?
Is it currently taxed and in use or laid up?
Will you please send detailed close up pictures all round

Stephen – last MOT expired in May 2019 @ 78534 miles – mileage now 78699 – not taxed as it is exempt – all pictures taken by Trade Classics are on the web site – its running and is used now and again but not regularly enough – hence the sale
Hope this helps

Hi – it looks like the bottom of the rear quarter panel / sill on the driver’s side has had some filler work and the door been painted, perhaps by yourself or a previous owner. Obviously she will need some work, but how would you rate the condition of the sills overall and do you think welded repairs and / or replacement would be advisable soon?

Is there any rust on the sill panels underneath the sill kick plates?

Thanks

Paul

Hi Stewart – yes there appears to be some filler and paintwork carried out – but not in my ownership – its as it was when I bought it- and the condition of the sills generally seems ok – they have not deteriorated much as far as I can see over the last 14 years so I would think it could have plenty of miles in it before it needs any serious welding – hope this helps
