A British car sensation - the Triumph Herald with Michelotti styling in sleek coupe form.

The Herald was first introduced in 1959 and made it through to 1971, the body was designed by the famous Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti and this example is powered by a 1147cc OHV inline-4 engine.

The Herald 1200 featured new rubber-covered bumpers, a wooden laminate dashboard and improved seating. The coupe was dropped from the range in late 1964, meaning there are very few of these rare gems still on the road today.

This particular example was fully restored by a specialist restoration company between 2000 to 2003 using all original parts for the sole reason of taking the car to shows.

Meet the owner

A lot of love, sweat and tears went into fully restoring this car from the chassis up.

John is selling this two-tone 1964 Triumph Herald 1200 which only has ~81,000 miles on the clock. The owner purchased the car back in June 2017 from a classic car enthusiast in the Yorkshire Dales. Over the 3 years it's only done 2,000 miles but £2,800 has been spent to keep it in the condition you see today.

During the winter months the car has been kept in a garage in Perth, Scotland.

Exterior

Michelotti did it again, with gorgeous Italian curves and distinctive headlights.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels look really good on this coupe example, distinctive '60s Michelotti styling. We did notice some slight surface corrosion around the rim of the wheel.

The Radials 102 rubber looks great around the car, with plenty of tread for the new owner to rest assured and drive away.

Bodywork

The bodywork is in good condition with all the panel gaps look good. We did notice some areas of corrosion around the wheel arches and rain gathering areas. John reports there is a little surface corrosion under the car that would be an easy fix as you can see in the images.

The bonnet was rubbed back to metal and completely restored 2 years ago and looks good inside and out.

Paint

A great finish with even coverage and colour all around the car. The two-tone paint really makes this car stand out from the other Heralds; we love it.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks good with no significant issues such as chips, cracks or scratches. The seals around the door, windows and windscreen look fine, but the seller is also including a new set(worth £260) with the car.

All of the chrome trim, styling lines, and door handles are in good and complete condition.

Interior

Sleek and practical - the second generation of Herald was treated to luxurious and comfortable leather seats.

Seats and Carpets

The seats look excellent and John reports them being comfortable. Both the front and back seats seem to have held their original appearance and shape with no significant wear or tear observed.

Dashboard

The wood panel dashboard is in excellent condition along with the speedometer and other switches on the car.

John reports all the controls, dials, gauges within the car all work as they should with no issues.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear stick look excellent and in-line with the condition of the car.

The car features an original Triumph steering wheel which may have been replaced during the restoration as it looks excellent.

Mechanics

An uprated 1147cc engine gives this Herald Coupe the extra nudge it needed - refined mechanics, while keeping its charm.

Engine and Gearbox

The Herald 1200 was launched with a new and enlarged single-carb 1147cc engine. A higher axle ratio was fitted for easier high-speed cruising.

John reports a smooth running engine and gearbox. He said, "on a cold morning you'll have to use a choke and it'll start faultlessly on the second or third attempt of turning the key". Around 3 years ago the gearbox had some renovations, such as springs being replaced, to help improve its performance. A new exhaust was fitted in June 2017.

Suspension and Brakes

In 1961 the Herald was a little more luxurious than the earlier version with the option of disc brakes and other components to enhance this classic British car.

John reports the brakes and suspension function well on this car with no knocks or unusual noises noted while driving.

The Drive

Transport yourself back to the '60s with the distinctive smell and sounds that the Herald offers. This car was a family favourite in 1959 and still will turn many heads as you cruise down the high street.

Electrics and Other

John reports the battery has recently been re-charged and all the other electrics on the car are working exactly as they should without fault.

History and Paperwork

A very healthy amount of history and servicing comes with this car. Full restoration details show the amount of money and effort that has gone into keeping the car as original as possible.

This car comes with a stack of paperwork including all the parts used during the restoration process between 2000 to 2003 totalling up to £12,000. Even though the car is MOT exempt being classified by DVLA as "historic", John has kept the car MOTd to ensure the records and provenance continue.

Included in the sale of this Herald is: rear screen rubber; rear side glass seal; seal bonnet to bulkhead; windscreen finisher; push-pull switch; OE seal windscreen to roof; windscreen seal; pair – front quarterlight rubbers; RH front quarter light rubber and LH front quarter light rubber. All unused and mostly in their original packing. The cost was £260.12. Also a double stitched car cover (was about £130.00); REDEX Lead Replacement of about 6/7 bottles; all the original 1964 Triumph booklets; Owners Manual, Owner Handbook, the workshop manual and Triumph Herald 1200-12/50 Handbook plus advertising literature.
