1978 MG MGB Roadster

Introduction

Tom Valle
Professional Consigner

The timeless British roadster, the MGB is a practical and pretty stalwart in the MG classic lineup.

The MGB was first introduced to the world in 1962 and produced until 1980, the soft-top sports car formula of the MGB stayed relatively simple throughout. The MGB saw a new B-series engine added, this example having been fitted with an uprated 2000cc stage 2 engine. It's good looks, honest charm and simple mechanics made it hugely successful over the years, shortly becoming Britain's best-selling sports car. Still today it is a noticeable favourite among many enthusiasts in the world of classic cars.

This car is coming out of 8 years of ownership and care, having been restored with easily over £12,000 spent to get it to the condition it sits in today, and upgraded early into the current ownership. Finished in a lovely white on black colourway with sporty MG wheels, it stands out on the roads today.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Tom after meeting Roger the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

After 8 years of ownership, it's time for someone else to keep the car in use and enjoy my MGB.

Roger has a love for a classic British sports cars and the MGB roadster was high on his bucket list. After coming across the car, he very quickly set about tastefully upgrading the car. It underwent major work to bring it up to the condition you see today, upgrading the drivetrain for a livelier experience.

The MGB roadster is one of his favourites, but after a few years of being dry stored and not getting the use it once did, Roger has decided to sell. He will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

Updated for that classic touring look, chrome bumpers, steel wheels and that all important external luggage rack.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with period-correct MG wheels, they give the car a more purposeful look than the wire-wheels you'll see on many. All the wheels have a good shine and finish to them with no major marks, curbing, or scratching to note. They could just be taken to the next level with a deep detail and polish.

Please take a look at the exterior photos for an extensive view of the wheels.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks great on this car, exactly what you would expect from a restored and garaged example. All the panel gaps and shut lines look tight and correct around the car, the doors hang well off their hinges, and Roger reports all the doors, boot and bonnet close easily and flush without fuss.

There is the smallest area of bubbling near the N/S front headlamp and the N/S rear arch has a little cracking along with a few very minor stone chips. View the photos and videos to see all the detail.

Paint

Finished in a classic white, it's an elegant colour that suits the chrome bumpers and brightwork on this roadster. You can just tell this car has been cared for over the years, the paint looks even in colour and finish across each panel.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this car looks great for its age. We love the convertible roof for those summer days. The chrome trim around the car looks excellent too and was replaced during the repaint.

The car's been fitted with a heated glass window on the rear, so any cold morning starts, you'll be able to maintain visibility.

Interior

The MGB Roadsters cabin is an accommodating place to be, some discrete upgrades in this car including leather seats.

Seats and Carpets

During the restoration the MGB saw black leather seats fitted, they look great inside the car today, the shape of the seats and bolsters look as they should, with some very minor creasing that can be seen in the images.

The carpets are a similar affair, clean and tidy throughout. View the images and videos for a closer look at the interior.

Dashboard

This black dashboard, with chrome bezels and sharp dials, looks in good condition. All the units are clean, clear and sharp and no cracks were found. Please take a look at the images and interior tour for a closer look.

The retro looking modern stereo fits nicely, it has bluetooth connectivity adding practicality to this classic.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

We love to see a classic Moto-Lita steering wheel fitted, and this example doesn't disappoint, in excellent condition.

A more modern gearstick has been fitted, with the overdrive switch moved to the side of the gear-knob, rather than the traditional switch on the top.

Mechanics

Stage 2 2.0L remanufactured engine with fully balanced flywheel, clutch and crankshaft, a bit of a wolf in sheeps clothing.

Engine and Gearbox

When Roger bought the car, he had it fitted with an upgraded stage 2, remanufactured 2000cc engine with Weber 40DCOE carburettors, and a fully balanced flywheel, clutch and crankshaft.

The gearbox has also seen a fully rebuilt and Roger assures us that the gear changes are smooth.

Suspension and Brakes

Roger reports a very smooth ride in the MGB and assures us the car stops exactly as it should.

The car was fitted with new brake discs, pads, as well as new front shock absorbers.

The Drive

With a grand touring focus in mind, this car shifts beautifully down open roads and with the addition of more storage space thanks to those luggage rails, you couldn't choose a better car to escape for a long weekend in.

Electrics and Other

The car is fitted with various electrical upgrades, a heated rear windscreen in the hood and a retro-styled Bluetooth radio. Roger reports that everything is working as it should do to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

As this should be a ‘Rubber Bumper’ car, (post Sept 1974) have there been any valence/wing body line changes in the front or rear to enable the chrome bumpers to fit?

That is a technical question for me! I must confess, although I love the MG, I have relied on the expert service of professionals to maintain it, primarily Vermont Classics in Leeds for the big stuff, like engine upgrade etc. The bumper was fitted before I purchased it but from memory, I’m sure I’ve been told a rubber bumper could be easily refitted if desired.
Also, although it isn’t advertised, I do have the original leather hood too, which is included, if someone wanted to take it back to the original.
Hope this helps.
Roger
