Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

A modern take on the original hairy-chested Triumph TR's, the last evolution of the original series.

The Triumph TR6 was the natural evolution of the TR series, developed to accommodate more power than ever, the fuel-injected straight-six 2.5-litre car really had nothing to compete against at its original price point. The budgetary and quality strain of parent company, British Leyland was starting to creep through when it was announced in 1969, but despite the circumstances, the Karmann styled Triumph was still a success, particularly in its intended American market.

A genuinely exciting prospect to drive, this 1972 example has seen some significant upgrades to enhance the original design. It comes with a huge amount of paperwork reaching back to the mid-70s and has seen the benefit of several mechanical, safety and comfort improvements. The total sum of this means it now brakes and handles better and is more comfortable than an original 1972 car. If you’re looking for an out of the box original, then this may not be the car for you, but read on anyway as we might just change your mind.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Andy the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I'm not really one for parking it up at a local classic car show, I'd much prefer to drive it across the continent!

Andy is not motivated by spending hours with a toothbrush cleaning the details or wasting money on mirrors to place under the car for village green shows, but rather admirably it's his sheer joy of driving the TR6 that offers him the kicks. Having acquired it in 2010, he has made it his very own, adding not much more than ~10,000 miles in the process, with some of those miles travelling down to Le Mans and Spa circuits.

The car is fully prepared for use (the boot contains more spare service parts than a modern Halfords) and as a result, it's been well tested for long-distance travel. However, this is part of the reason why the car is now up for sale, it has travelled just 2 miles in between the last MOTs, and most of that was to the MOT station and back. The car is not being used as it had been, as the driving duties tend to go to one of his other classics. Andy will be happy to answer any questions you have in the comments below.

Exterior

Finished In a classic Pimento Red, this TR6 has seen some subtle and tasteful visual changes.

Wheels and Tyres

The car comes with 2 sets of wheels, a set of 5 authentic Minilites as pictured, and 5 of the original steel items. The tyres on the Minilites are five-year-old Yokohama C-drive 2's, and both the tyres and wheels are in excellent condition.

The steels are also in very good condition with Kumho, again with tyres that are ready to use, and also come complete with nuts and the original centre caps.

Bodywork

The last evolution of the original TR series, one of the biggest changes was the design. Restyled by Karmann, the car now had a more modern look. The intricacies of the panel design on the 4 were somewhat flattened out for a much more streamlined design.

On this example, the panels sit straight and are flush fitting. The boot and bonnet alignment would need a minor adjustment, some fettling for the new owner to complete. We noticed a small imperfection on the boot lid and at the bottom of the nearside corner of the windscreen, but other than that it's a very solid car. The engine bay and boot well are good, with the underside of the car is in very good solid condition.

Paint

Pimento Red, a classic and popular colour for the TR6. The finish of the paint is good, with a good lustre observed and an even finish in colour across all panels.

With this being a car that Andy has used on road trips etc, there are a few blemishes on the car. Some minor stone chips seen on the front, and a similar story around the wheel arches, some areas having had small touch ups/repairs completed. On close inspection, the drivers door has a slightly different finish in the paint where a repair looks to have been actioned. Take a look at the videos and photos for a detailed view.

Glass and Trim

The glass and trim on the whole are in great condition, with no issues worth pointing out. The car has seen a number of upgrades, which considering the traditional nature of TR6 buyers, should not offend and are fairly subtle and certainly not outlandish. This includes the blacking out of the wipers and mirrors.

The roof itself is in excellent condition, with no signs of damage or damp. It's a mohair item, made and fitted by "Don Trimming". There is some wear on top of the chrome windscreen frame, where the roof pegs over time have struck when being fitted. Another non-original but well-considered item is the roof cover tidy which fits snuggly on the car when the top is down, with the useful addition of a wind deflector behind the seats.

Interior

Some modern additions for comfort and practicality make this example unique.

Seats and Carpets

The car has been upgraded with comfort and long-distance travel in mind, with the addition of aftermarket seats. Obviously offering better comfort than the originals, they are in very good condition with no significant issues worth noting, and suitably coloured to match the car and original spec.

The carpets and mats are in good condition, with no immediate issues and damage to them. The boot carpet is also in good condition.

Dashboard

The veneer finish on the dashboard has resisted the years well, and it is in decent condition with the exception of some wear on the glovebox. The actual glovebox functions well.

The switchgear has the expected age-related wear but the dials themselves are in very good condition. Here's something that may upset the purists, but the car has been fitted with a cup-holder. The logic is watertight and it's a quality item, this concession to modernity makes so much sense when you consider the cars past usage. In addition, it has been fitted with a provision for a sat-nav, which has a plug coming out of the now-defunct ashtray, arguably a far better use of it too. The TR6 also comes with a Clarion CD/Stereo player with speakers mounted on either side of the front section of the transmission tunnel.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The condition of both the gearstick and steering wheel is very good, with no obvious signs of wear. The steering wheel is a beautiful Moto-Lita item, very classy.

The gearstick gaiter looks to be in very good order too, with no splits or wear on the leather.

Mechanics

A stock 2.5L straight six, with some added practicality in the ignition system.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine has been subject to a series of useful medication in the name of reliability, The engine itself has been well maintained over the years, with paperwork showing evidence of care. The car has an A type gearbox with overdrive fitted, perfect for touring.

The improvements are numerous, but the main electrical items such as an uprated high-torque starter motor, Magnecor competition leads, new coil and an uprated alternator, along with a full stainless steel exhaust, uprated Bosch fuel pump and a rebuilt rear-differential means that this car is more than capable of the tasks asked of it. View the video to see the engine in action and the components in detail.

Suspension and Brakes

With the practical enhancements on this car, they've followed through to the brakes and suspension too. The brakes have been upgraded with lightweight aluminium four-piston calipers. The rear shocks have been uprate to Gaz items too, to ensure an even ride.

The Drive

The TR6 was considered the definitive of the TR cars, thanks to the He-man character and all-independent suspension. This example has seen those traits improved, which makes it a versatile alternative to the original cars.

Because the car has been modified for long distances and reliability it retains its fundamental character without compromise. Of course, the purists may baulk at the idea of a third brake light or cup-holder, but its well-sorted engine and subtle styling upgrades mean it's a car that offers far more than the original.

Electrics and Other

Going along the theme of the car, the electrics have been subject to updates. Most obviously is the addition of the third brake light discreetly fitted above the rear number plate. The car also has a race-style light fitted at the rear of the car which acts as a fog light, both again are sensible precautions.

The headlamps have been upgraded to use HID headlamps which are regulated by an electrical ballast. All of the standard electrical fittings are said to be fully functional.

History and Paperwork

Coming with a wealth of historical documentation, with all 5 owners doing their part to preserve the car, this TR is ready to tour.

There's plenty of bedtime reading in the form of the invoices included with the car, with receipts going back to the mid-'70s. With over 200 pieces of documentation, the highlights are the original invoice for the Minilites, Triumph dealership clutch replacement, a test record from a date with the Crypton machine and a handwritten sheet of fuel records from 1979. It all helps to paint a picture that the car has been well maintained by its five owners over the years. In addition, the TR6 comes with a heritage certificate confirming its matching engine and chassis numbers, along with the original dealer destination, key numbers and factory fitted equipment list.

Andy has completed some choice upgrades to this TR6 that make it perfect for touring; ignition and electrical systems upgraded for reliability and power, brakes and suspension updated for safety, interior updates for comfort when touring. These updates make this car perfect for those enthusiasts and potential buyers who are looking for a car to go touring in.

Hi Andy, the paint defect on the N/S scuttle by the windscreen is hard to distinguish on the pictures and video….. is it corrosion starting to bubble up and if it is does it also creep under the windscreen surround please?

Hi
The chassis is in excellent condition and very straight and solid. The paintwork is original as far as I am aware. The only new paint I have found is on the driver’s door and front off side wing. This was i believe a repair from many years ago, at least 2 owners ago so 25 years plus.

Hi,

Just reviewing the videos for your TR6. It looks great. Just a quick one, does it have an oil leak at all? It looked from the pictures that there were possibly drips of oil forming h Det watch the engine?

Many thanks

Simon
