Introduction

Stuart McIntyre
Professional Consigner

A famous little car that played a part in marking the Queen's Silver Jubilee back in 1977.

The Mini 1000 Mark IV was first introduced in 1976 - the car had a front rubber mounted subframe, with several mechanical refinements meant to reduce the noise levels in the cabin. The Mini has never had a barrier to ownership, making it a hit and an iconic legend that is affordable with a focus on fun and usability.

This example is a rare, a very low mileage Mini 1000 that enjoyed family ownership for many years. The car has been in the family since 2008 and he tells us the fascinating story that the car is believed to possibly be one of the first Mini's to been painted silver. The car was originally won in a competition to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977 - British Leyland ran a competition along with Colgate which gave this the car its silver and blue colourway. Most importantly, the mileage reads at just ~5,500.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Stuart after meeting Andy the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's been in the family for many years and very rarely used, we didn't want to increase the mileage!

The car comes complete with all its fascinating history, e.g. letters from BL and Colgate and correspondence between the winner, take a look for yourself in the history and paperwork section below. The original owner kept the car in her garage for around 3 years, as she hadn't passed her driving test initially! Subsequent to that, after passing, she used the car for some trips seen by photographs included.

The original owner was a neighbour to Andy's sister, and that's how ownership transferred to the family in 2008. Since owning the car, it's passed from his sister to his dad, and now Andy's been looking after the little Mini. Keeping the mileage down and preserving this little piece of history has been the order of the day, the original set of tyres have managed to stay with the car as spares! Andy will be happy to answer and questions you have on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Believed to be one of the first Mini 1000s finished in silver to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee in 1977.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels look really great on this little Mini 1000 - Valken rubber wrapping the tiny 10" wheels, with simple chrome hub caps.

When getting really close there appears to be some very minor corrosion on the rear wheels, yet nothing major. Please take a look at the photographs and videos for a closer look at the rubber and additional 4 original tyres that are included in the sale.

Bodywork

During Andy's ownership he has attended to any surface rust issues and treated the required panels where needed. The bodywork looks generally in great condition all around, Mini's are known to rust, but this car is in good condition owing to careful ownership and the low mileage early in the life of the car. We noticed some minor surface corrosion starting to appear above the windscreen, take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view.

Paint

Finished in silver, the "Cooper World" magazine seems to imply that silver wasn't an option for these cars back in '77, this car was specially commissioned for the Jubilee competition.

There are no signs of heavy traffic / road use in the forms of stone chips and day-to-day marks, as you would expect from an exceptionally low mileage example. The car has had some exterior paint work carried out on it over time, take a look through the video and photo review to see the condition in detail.

Glass and Trim

The glass is very good throughout with no chips, cracks or damage noted.

The chrome trim looks very good around the car along with the rubber seals that match the age and mileage.

Interior

Only original interior to be found in here, with a distinctive Colgate blue cabin space.

Seats and Carpets

The dark blue vinyl interior with black carpets are a smarth presentation, and have been kept in excellent original condition since 1977.

The seats look great with very little wear, along with the carpets, take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the interior of this iconic car.

Dashboard

The dials reflect the originality of this little Mini and it's lovely to see how well kept the interior of this car is. The minimal classic Mini three gauge dials sit in the middle of the dashboard, each gauge appears in very good condition free from damage.

The switch gear really backs up the originality and mileage of this car, minimal wear and unrestored. Please take a look at the interior video for a detailed tour.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A similar story with the steering wheel and gear stick; both appear in very good original condition, with some minor scratches on the central steering hub.

Mechanics

The classic and nimble body with the punchy little 998cc, it's that iconic British classic.

Engine and Gearbox

Powered by the 998cc British Leyland engine, this little lightweight pocket rocket is ready to take on any road you throw at it. The engine bay was clean and the engine started without any fuss during the cold start video we filmed.

Please take a look at the video to see Andy starting the car with the choke, letting it come up to temperature, free from any smoke, and reverse the car out of the garage for photographs.

Suspension and Brakes

The rubber-cone suspension system is an aspect of the Mini which required very little maintenance. Due to the very low mileage, the car has never seen many problems, spending most of its life tucked away in the garage.

Andy reports the car's brakes and suspension are working very well with no issues to report. Please take a look at the mechanical photographs and videos to see a closer look underneath this car.

The Drive

Andy loves occasionally getting this little pocket rocket out on the road, the family have not used the car an awful lot over the 13 years of ownership, but when they have, they mention it being a lot of fun.

Electrics and Other

Simple and minimal electrical features are included on this rare Mini - Andy reports all the electrics are working well on the car with no faults to report.

History and Paperwork

The combination of the low mileage and fascinating history makes this Mini 1000 a very attractive collectable classic.

The original owner won the car as first prize in the Co-op Silver Jubilee promotion that was run in conjunction with Colgate toothpaste to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. The car was specially painted silver in celebration, believed not to have been an option for Mini's at the time. The condition of the car today backs up the mileage, along with some older MOTs that show the car was hardly used early in its life. The current family ownership since 2008, has added around 3,000 miles in 13 years. It's a car that has been cherished for sure.

Hi Andy
Has the front bumper and bonnet been repaired and sprayed at some point ? The bumper joint line doesn’t look to shabby
Also the dent in the tailgate and chrome bumper – was that seen to professionally – and does the tailgate work perfectly now ?

Thanks very much for getting in touch with me – I will try to answer your questions as best as I can.

The car was recently in Steve Walker body shop in Bathgate, West Lothian where the front bumper was removed in order to spray the two front wing panels. When the bumper was removed it was apparent some minor repair work was required on the bumper. With regards to the “tailgate” dent that you refer to , I was not even aware of this. Rest assured this car is a 100% genuine, remarkably low mileage vehicle, with and incredible history and all the back up paperwork to prove it. Andy

Thanks Andy
What was the reason for the wings being sprayed (guessing it was linked to the arches?) – does stand out a lot in the pictures between drivers door and passenger door to wings ie the different shades of silver. Is it as obvious in person ?
On one of the old pictures in the garage there’s a dent in the tailgate – and also MOT failure at one point

Fantastic history !!
