Introduction

Kulraj Salh
COO

Arguably one of the best and most robust engines ever built that's paired with the equally as stunning manual gearbox - strap them in a well balanced chassis and you have one of the most thrilling roadsters ever made.

The S2000 has all the ingredients of an exceptional sports car, front-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive, and perfect 50:50 weight distribution with only 2 seats.

The Honda S2000 was first introduced in 1999 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Honda and was produced for 10 years - during that time only 8,000 came to the UK.

The car was given the chassis designation AP1 and featured a bulletproof 1,997cc inline four-cylinder DOHC-VTEC engine. The F-series engine in the S2000 held the crown for the highest specific output of a naturally aspirated engine for 10 years, only being dethroned with the launch of the Ferrari 458.

The output was thanks to the 11.7:1 compression ration, roller rocker valvetrain, variable valve timing (VVT), and impressive 1.82:1 rod-to-stoke ratio that let the 2L engine hit 9,000 rpm.

There is no doubt the S2000 is cementing its name in the history books of one of the all time greats and prices are really on the move. This S2000 is a real head-turner in the modern classic market thanks to it being highly original, having just one owner from new, while only showing ~58,600 on the odometer - David is the proud owner and has made the difficult decision to sell.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kulraj after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've owned this car for nearly two decades now and I bought it at a time when others were swooning after new Porsche Boxters at similar money - I saw a different path and chose the S2000 as it's the most intoxicating exhilarating and well engineered car ever made.

David's the one and only owner of this S2000, purchasing it from his local Honda garage in the Cotswolds. During the 19 years of ownership David's never missed a service and he has been meticulous at making sure the vehicle is both cosmetically and mechanically sound.

As a pilot, the S2000 has been dry-stored in David's hangar, along with a few other interesting machines. He reserves the car for occasional weekend getaway trips with his wife and by having a look at the photographs you can tell this car has only been used in good weather.

David will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

Distinctive styling that is only getting better with age and looks even more incredible in metallic Silverstone.

Wheels and Tyres

The 5-spoke Honda wheels look excellent on this example after a lifetime of careful parking by David. When getting really close we did notice very minor corrosion to the Honda centre caps; an easy fix if desired.

Premium Bridgestone Potenza tyres (manufacturers recommended) wrap the wheels and are all presented in great condition with lots of tread left for the new owner this summer.

Bodywork

The bodywork appears all original and is in excellent condition on this Honda S2000 -19yrs of dry storage in David's Hangar and it really shows.

You can tell this is a fair weather car, underneath looks excellent too, with no issues to report.

When getting very close to the bodywork we noticed some very minor stone chips to the front bumper, a very small ding, and some minor scratches near the edge of the driver's door - all of which are an easy remedy if the new owner wishes.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior.

Paint

The Silverstone paint finish reveals an excellent lustre. The colour is consistent and looks even across each panel as you can see in the media.

Please take a look at the photographs to see how good the paint is for yourself.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in excellent condition across the car, along with the trim.

All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no signs of excessive wear or degrading.

Interior

The seating position gives you a clue that this car takes its sporting credential rather seriously.

Seats and Carpets

The red seats and carpets became something of a fast Honda trademark by the late '90s and they are also found in this S2000.

David's done an excellent job at preserving the life of this car, the interior really shows the amount of care and attention invested.

The seats look excellent inside the cabin, with just some areas of age beginning to show on the driver's bolsters.

The carpets reflect the condition of the rest of the car; excellent and clean throughout.

Dashboard

The dashboard is very clean and offers a sporty appeal with the large digital rev counter.

David reports everything is working as it should.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gearstick are in excellent original condition.

We like the look of the alloy gearstick with the black sports steering wheel in its very driver-focused position.

Mechanics

The steel monocoque chassis and body structure gave the S2000 levels of rigidity previously unheard of in convertibles.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine is really what sets the Honda apart from the rest, producing a mere 237bhp from its 2L block - impressive enough today let alone back in 2002. The four-pot is placed so far back, technically the S2000 is a front/mid-engine sports car.

The gearbox sometimes gets overlooked due to the engine taking all the limelight, however, this is arguably one of the best six-speed boxes every created. Precision and robust with just 40mm travel from left to right across three open gates - that's quite exceptional and a real experience to use.

Watch the cold start video to see the car starting with no issues or unusual sounds.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension setup is double wishbone all round and David reports suspension and brakes work faultlessly, mentioning a firm and sporty ride with stopping on-demand performance.

The Drive

The S2000 is reported to be a hugely rewarding driver's car and has always been a firm favourite among petrolheads.

If you've never driven one then you really can't imagine what the experience is like. The valves open at 6,000rpm and that's when you hear the car scream at you, you just want to scream back but there's no time as you'll already be at 9,000rpm with the car begging you to change, you change in a blink and you'll be back at 6,000 to do it all over again.

Adam, our CEO here at Trade Classics bought one back in 2004, brand new, he had it for three years and clocked up a colossal 93,000 miles. Adam said it never missed a beat and it was the best car he's ever owned - he's also a 911 guy too!

Electrics and Other

The car features a push-to-start ignition, air conditioning, digital display and an electronic soft top hood.

David reports all the switches, lights and buttons work as they should.

History and Paperwork

This is a seriously good S2000 - one owner from new with excellent history makes it a gold status investment as well as having one of the best two seater roadsters ever made.

A rare and desirable car with a huge following, the S2000 has future investment potential written all over it, especially with its mileage and ownership history.

Prices have been on the rise and the demand for original examples is high. Take a look at the prices across the pond right now - Bring a Trailer have had some cracking results and even sold a super low mileage S2000 for $112,111 - yes you heard us correctly! See here https://bringatrailer.com/honda/s2000/

David has maintained the service history and the timing belt was changed in 2010 at ~35,200.

The car is also being sold with its plush inside / outdoor Auto-Pak cover and its colour matching hardtop.

David will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Hello David, I live in Shrewsbury but don’t get back there from abroad until 13th June. If I were winning bidder would it be a problem for you to keep the car with you until I return? Regards

Good Morning Adam, that would be no problem. However I must warn you current bids are well short of my reserve, which will be final. You will never regret buying an S2000, the world is waking up to the sheer value they represent. Good luck.

Hi I notice from the very last photo that there is rust splitting the seam of the quarter panel. Is this the only corrosion?

I was not aware of any such corrosion. If you are keen to secure the car then come and inspect it before the auction closes. If this very special AP1 car fails to reach its reserve it will NOT offered elsewhere and remain in the family. Time is short, stop worrying about some tiny surface corrosion that even I was unaware of.

Hi Alan, please study the photos and videos of the flawless paintwork and hood quality and operation. To open/close the hood, the handbrake must be ON then the operation takes 7 seconds. Fasten a couple of clips and then you are on your way again. The hood is as good as on the day of delivery…., see the photos and video. This is no ordinary used car, it has Honda quality and reliability in spades.

Love the 1 owner provenance. Has the car ever had any body repairs/ paintwork as a result of accident damage?
I note that cam belts were done 2010/35k miles. Would this be due again now on either time or mileage basis?
There look to be a few stone chips on the front of the car but no more than time/mileage would indicate. A small scuff on the wheel arch front near side and a mini dent os door, bottom. Other than these the car looks very nice and genuinely straight. Is this a fair summary?
Are you happy that the engine and drive chain are free of issues? Clonks, rattles, etc!
Many thanks.
