Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

A byword for pace, presence and prestige, the DB9 is still an irresistible proposition.

This model made its debut in 2004 and was the first Aston Martin to utilise the all-new bonded-aluminium VH Chassis. The convertible, known as the Volante has become a genuinely timeless design. By blending sophisticated technology with the grace of Aston Martin's finest traditions, the DB9 is simply one of the finest best-looking hand-built cars you can buy in the current market.

Each one of the cars previous owners have kept on top of any issues, to ensure its reliability and presentation. Among these super cars charms, the V12 engine has to be worthy of a mention, as it has been regularly used and enjoyed receiving servicing throughout its life.

Tastefully finished in Grigio Titanio Silver, with contracting blue Connolly leather with walnut trim and comes with a very recent main dealer service.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren Rungasamy after meeting Jerry the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I had to wait a while for the right Volante to come along and it had to be in silver with a dark interior - my patience was well rewarded!

Jerry has been lucky enough to have owned several prestige sports cars in the past, yet the Aston Martin is one that he holds closest to his heart. It's fair to say he has used and enjoyed the car in his ~10 year ownership, stretching its legs across Europe and making the most of the car's abilities.

Jerry has been offered a deal on a Bentley which he couldn't refuse and he has reluctantly decided to sell the DB9 due to the lack of space to accommodate both cars. He last had the car serviced through a main dealer, which included fitment of a new radiator, in 2021. He'll be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

A truly striking design that has aged beautifully - this Volante is a simply stunning example.

Wheels and Tyres

The alloys 19" 15 spoke OEM are in very good condition, with just the tiniest signs of age.

Bridgestone tyres all round, Jerry has had two new front tyres fitted post the photography of the car, in preparation for the sale.

Bodywork

The bodywork is extremely good with no uneven gaps observed. The structure, including the engine bay, inner wings, sills and suspension mounts are all in clean condition. We didn't see any evidence of corrosion on the body, with the underside looking solid too.

There are a handful of tiny dings observed on the near-side front edge of the bonnet, but these could easily be rectified by a specialist. In some of the pictures, you might notice a small mark on the lower/underside of the front bumper, Jerry has had these issues remedied as captured in the underside video provided in the mechanics section of the listing.

Paint

The silver paint maintains a good lustre, with no swirls or matting and as a result, it captures the light (and admiring glances) well.

As expected for a car with a low nose, it has a few minor chips on the front of the car. The front bumper looks like it has had a good quality respray in the past. The door edges are generally good with the smallest of wear, the corner of the near-side rear bumper as a minor mark, with a little additional wear observed on the boot edge.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good condition, with no significant issues. All panes are chip-free, with no issues with the laminate. The rear glass is good.

The chrome finishing across the body is in good condition, with no issues worth pointing out.

Interior

Beautifully tailored with the finest of materials - the appeal is enhanced once you drop the roof.

Seats and Carpets

The blue pacific Connolly leather seats are in good condition, with the driver's seat showing typical signs of wear on the bolster and the base. There is no tear damage and the stitching is intact.

The rear seats have minor indentations in places but again without rips. The carpets and headlining look fresh, with no significant signs of age. The boot is in good condition, with the carpet showing minimal wear.

Dashboard

The dashboard, binnacle and centre console leather are in excellent condition, with minor signs of age but nothing to distract. The door cards are in good order, with the walnut veneer door cappings in good condition too - they look lovely and really add to the quality feel that you can expect with an Aston with just a bit of bleaching in some areas that this era of car can have.

All of the controls, switches and dials are in good condition with some signs of wear evident on the main unit. All are said to be operational.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good condition that appear to be in line with the age and mileage of the car.

The car's paddle-shift controls show some wear but are fully functional in both manual and automatic guises.

Mechanics

Often considered to be a cruiser rather than an out-and-out sports car, the open road experience suggests otherwise.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up instantly with no hesitation, with no unwanted noises heard from the engine or exhaust. The car came up to temperature with no issues.

The owner has said that the car has been reliable and has not needed much in terms of engine work over the 10 years of ownership. The engine bay is clean but not overdone, the owner pointing out that any engine cleaning has been carried out by Aston Martin themselves, who ensure the right procedure is carried out.

Jerry last had the car serviced by Aston Martin in 2021. As part of their inspection, they noticed a small issue with the radiator and so the whole unit has been replaced.

Suspension and Brakes

The car is said to perform well on the road, with no significant issues noted - no noises or juddering in action.

The rear brake warning light comes on due to the low pad reading but these have been resolved by Aston Martin prior to the sale of the car, as pictured in the invoices. The front pads were replaced in 2016 and have quite a bit of life left.

The suspension is said to perform well with just a front bush and assembly component that was replaced in 2014.

The Drive

Composed and grippy, the car is best suited for long-distance journeys - its firm ride which mated up to the V12 engine offers a genuinely thrilling cornering experience.

With the hood down, the charisma of the DB9 shines through.

The car has a solid maintenance record, along with each issue being addressed in good time means that this car still feels modern and dynamic.

Electrics and Other

Electrically the car comes up to scratch, with no issues reported by the owner. The Atlantic blue mohair roof is in good condition, with minor scuffs but no evidence that it has been stored outside. The roof retracts and raises well, with no strain from the electric motors.

A trickle charger and boot umbrella will also be included.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~10 year ownership, this car has a solid servicing history with most actioned by Aston Martin main dealers.

Originally registered at Lancaster Reading, the car has a service history all carefully documented in a history file. Each of the 7 previous owners has ensured Aston Martin dealer servicing, with one independent stamp prior to Jerry's ownership. Jerry last had the car serviced by Aston Martin which included; oil and filters, rear brake pads, new battery, new radiator. In addition to this, two new front tyres have been fitted, and some scrapes under the front bumper have been remedied. This was ~400 miles ago, so now a lot of mileage since.

Since taking the car on in 2011, Jerry has added a wind deflector and a Bluetooth connectivity unit. The car has seen a handful of fixes, all of which have been carried out by the main dealer; this includes a new ignition coil, a replacement tonneau motor and a new battery on top of the servicing.

The car will also be sold with its original plate, the private plate is not included.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.
