Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

An iconic motor, the 2CV is the definition of economy and convenience that's gained a quirky reputation over time.

The Citroën 2CV was first introduced in 1948 at Paris Mondial de l'Automobile and then manufactured for 42 years. The purpose behind the car was to motorise French farmers who were still using horses and carts. The car featured straightforward metal bodywork, originally corrugated for added strength without weight. Any car that stays in production for nearly half a century has to be an iconic legend, and the 2CV (or tin snail as it's sometimes affectionately known) is up there with the best of them.

Aubrey is a big 2CV fan, he loves working on them and has actually raced a few too. This car he picked up as a light restoration project, but once he gets started, it's hard to stop him and so he's made sure this car has a new lease of life, with some added tricks under the hood too.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Aubrey the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

My passion with 2CV's started back in 1997, when I competed in my first 24 hour race in Ireland.

Aubrey has been racing 2CV's since 1997, having competed in countless races since that time. This passion for classic endurance racing is why he knows 2CVs inside out, in the past purchasing them and upgrading and running in the engines in preparation for racing.

This particular example however was not bought for racing, but simply for leisure use locally. It was bought as a light restoration project, but after the car failed its MOT on a hole in the floor and some leaks around the windscreen, Aubrey ended up completing a body-off restoration of the car. Since the car ended up going through a more comprehensive restoration, an uprated engine which was originally destined for his son's car was installed, a little secret under the hood that makes this beautiful 2CV that little bit more special. Aubrey will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

An unmissable French classic with it's quirky and charming snail-like styling.

Wheels and Tyres

All 4 wheels are painted with chrome hub cabs and look in excellent condition on this 2CV Spécial.

They're wrapped in Toyo 310's rubber and dated 2009, with plenty of tread on them from our observation.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks excellent on this example, panel gaps look good and no signs of the usual corrosion you often see on these cars, with it having been restored in Aubreys ownership.

With help from Rick Pembro, after the car failed an MOT on some corrosion, the body was taken off the car and the following work completed; both floors and toe board replaced, bottom of the door pillars, all wings and in general all the panels tidied up. The car sits on a galvanised chassis and has been comprehensively waxoiled. Please take a look at the images and videos to really appreciate the bodywork on this car.

Paint

Finished in a vibrant 'Rouge Vallenlunga' paint, the paint looks excellent, even in coverage and deep in colour across every panel. The car was resprayed while the body was off the car for restoration. The colour suits the French styling, it's a beautiful French classic.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in excellent condition across the car, along with the trim. All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no signs of wear or degrading. When the restoration was being completed, Aubrey fitted a heated rear windscreen.

The hood has seen better days too, and so during the restoration a new hood was fitted.

Interior

A smart interior with only the essentials fitted, along with a hard-wearing black vinyl seats.

Seats and Carpets

Black vinyl lines the interior of this Citröen 2CV, red piping finishes off the seats. The seats and carpets look great on this example, they were recovered as part of the restoration.

Dashboard

The original simple styled dashboard is fitted here, in the highly original fashion. Crisp dials with legible numbers are found on this well cared for example.

Please view the photographs for a closer view of the dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

You'll find the original Citroën 2CV two-spoke steering wheel and gear knob here, both look to be in line with the rest of the car, i.e. in very good condition all round.

Please take a closer view at the detail in the extensive images and videos.

Mechanics

You don't have to go fast to have fun, but it is fun to go fast, and this 2CV has a bit of a secret under the hood to help you make faster progress.

Engine and Gearbox

The car is fitted with a 0.6L characterful air-cooled engine which burst into life with no issues during the cold start video. This engine was originally destined for Aubreys son, but during the restoration, he decided to fit it here. It's got an little bit of extra zip to it, and importantly torque, coming from a Newman "race cam", high compression pistons and the heads rebuilt by Pete Sparrow.

The gearbox is a four-speed manual, rather advanced on an inexpensive car at the time. The 2CV featured an interesting shift pattern, the idea was to put the most used gears opposite each other, a clever concept that worked well in the Tin Snail. During the restoration, Aubrey rebuilt the gearbox, the engine has only covered ~1,000 miles since rebuild.

Suspension and Brakes

The 2CV features extremely long-travel suspension, which offers a very soft ride and offroad capability, carry eggs over a freshly ploughed field without any mess!

Aubrey reports the brakes are serviced in line with the maintenance schedule, and MOT tests ensuring that everything works as expected.

The Drive

A very soft ride is offered in the Citroën 2CV6, the suspension allows you to drive over any surface you desire in comfort and control. With the added torque in the engine, Aubrey reports that it makes it all the more usable; it can cruise at 80MPH comfortably and you don't find yourself having to change gear at the slightest incline.

Electrics and Other

We love the simple electrical set up in this classic car, back to the raw driving experience. To Aubreys knowledge, everything is working as it should.

History and Paperwork

The 2CV's are becoming a very desirable for their classic quirky good looks, this restored example will be hard to beat.

A restored example that is coming out of 5 years ownership from very capable hands. Body-off, panels replaced as needed, and full resprayed. The interior was also smartened up and seats recovered. The really special kicker in this comes from the "fast road" engine set-up, still running on the original Solex carbs, the engine has the extra zip and torque needed to make it a much more usable classic.

None whatsoever the car was owned by others for 25 + years before I got it and the speedo is only 999999 miles so could be any mileage if that is relevant to anything with a new chassis, engine etc

A beautiful example of the tin snail, Aubrey.
The text mentions 4 wheels.
Is there a spare?

Hi Neil,

It comes with a matching 5th wheel in the boot along with the jack/ wheel brace.

There is a picture of the spare wheel in the ‘interior’ photographs of it.

Regards,
Glyn

1986 car is 35 years old yet you are saying only 11000 miles? That’s less than 320 miles a year – do you have proof of that mileage being genuine such as garage receipts or MOT’s please?
Thanks
