Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

A distinctive comfortable cruiser with strong performance.

Introduced in 1993 and powered by the M60B40 282bhp 4.0-litre V8 engine, it offered an ultra-smooth ride with the power to accelerate from 0 to 60mph in 6 seconds, becoming BMW's ultimate motorway muncher. Serving as a showcase for the brand, it was kitted out with state of the art technology, it offered supercar performance with the watertight build quality and durability expected from BMW.

This is a very special example as it's sold with excellent service history and the car has seen just 2 previous owners over its 26 year lifetime. It has also seen a completely new engine, fitted by BMW as part of the warranty replacement in 2002, meaning the current engine has only covered 47K since its installation. Finished in Calypso Red with a Light Silvergrey leather interior, this 1995 automatic car is in excellent condition throughout thanks to its considerate ownership profile.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren Rungasamy after meeting Barry the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This car was just 4 years old when I bought it - I've loved owning it and seeing it morph into a 'modern classic' but I'm just not using it much - it really does deserve a new home now.

Attracted to the relaxed driving mannerisms, comfort and sheer indulgence of the V8 engine, Barry took the car on when it was just 4 years old as an occasional work car. Having owned the car for over 20 years, it was a difficult decision to decide to part with it, but its lack of use due to several other cars at his disposal has meant that the car is now placed for sale.

Exterior

The styling still maintains an elegant and purposeful presence, offering a clue to its pace - oh and just look at those pop-up headlights!

Wheels and Tyres

The alloys are in good condition with typical signs of their age, with just some minor kerbing on the front wheels.

The original multispoke wheels were replaced by the current 'Throwing Stars' wheels when the car was a few years old. The Lassa front tyres were replaced last year, with the rear Falken items dating from 2018. All are in good condition with lots of life left in them. The spare looks unused and the car comes with two additional wheel trim pieces.

Bodywork

The bodywork is well presented, with excellent panel fit throughout - flush fitting panels and equal gaps.

We noticed a small blemish on the driver's door being the only remaining evidence of wear.

The nose cone and front edge of the bonnet look good, with the door bottoms looking solid. Structurally the car looks strong, with no issues in the engine and boot bay observed during our visit.

The jacking points and underside of the sills appearing to be decent. Being picky, there are signs of very minor corrosion coming through at the bottom of the rear arches on both sides and a little bubbling coming through on the boot sill.

Paint

The metallic Calypso Red paint finish is of a very good standard with a good glossy lustre. The car has seen a respray at some point in its life, with the odd sign of peeling lacquer where the body meets the trim (e.g aerial and window trim)

Overall the car is free from scuffs and shows plenty of evidence of being looked after, with the bumpers looking particularly good.

The lower sections of the front air dam has been painted in the body colour.

Glass and Trim

The rubber trim is in good condition with no significant wear, cracks or damage observed. The body trim looks smart and have resisted the ages well with no fade or looseness. The glass is good, with no cracks or chips.

The rear screen has a small amount of laminate damage but all are leak-free.

Interior

BMW built an interior to last and it still looks modern today - this must have felt like stepping into the future back in the early '90s.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats are in good condition with typical low-use age-related cracks but nothing significant.

The lower bolster part of the driver's seat has been refurnished and looks good.

All other seats are good, with no signs of damage, rips or abuse and intact stitching throughout.

The carpets and mats are in good condition with no obvious signs of wear, other than the expected but minor age-related issues. The owner has taken the precaution of using an extra mat that has preserved the original.

The door cards, sill plates and headlining are good, with no scuffs or significant damage, although the sunroof padding has a few marks.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition, with minor marks observed on the centre console - the fascia is free from damage.

The tops of the dashboard are unmarked, the switches, controls and dials are in good condition and all, including the sunroof, electric seats, windows and air-con are functional. There are no issues with the digital readout.

The car also comes with a spare functional OEM tape player (bought for its volume control nob) and a spare multi-information display.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear stick have worn the years well and show no damage or wear issues of note - they really do look good.

Mechanics

BMW's reputation for reliability and durability makes the V8 840 Ci an intelligent step into the modern classic world.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start was faultless, the engine fired up with no issues. The condensation soon cleared up with no unwanted noises or leaks from the engine observed.

The engine was replaced free of charge by BMW in 2002 at 78K on the clock, so the current engine has been seen around 47,000 miles in the last 19 years.

The gearbox is said to be good with no issues with slippage or engagement issues.

Suspension and Brakes

The rear bushes have been replaced, and it has seen some brake work in the past. Their function is said not to cause any issues, with no impairment to the cars ride or handling. No noises are said to come from the steering, with no evidence of brake noises or poor performance.

The Drive

The 840 Ci has an enviable reputation for durability, comfort and pace. Backed up by regular servicing, maintenance and thanks to its cherished lifestyle, the car still retains much of its original appeal.

Barry assures us that the car drives impeccably and retains its smooth ride and refinement.

Electrics and Other

Electrically the car is said to be in good order, with all of the interior controls said to be in fully functional order and no reported issues with the engine management computer.

History and Paperwork

Regular use and excellent service history helps to back up its reliability - super important for a car like this.

Ordered new at Ian Anthony BMW in Bolton, the car was relocated to Winchester BMW within the year and on to its second owner in Surrey. Following its sale in 1999, the car was bought by its current owner from Royal Ascot Garage BMW. The respective owners have kept on top of its servicing needs, with BMW main dealer stamps up to 2006, and a specialist local garage thereafter. Bought as a long term proposition, the owner didn't think to retain all of its invoices but there is evidence that the car has seen its regular maintenance and work. There is also an invoice for the engine exchange in 2002, which was replaced under warranty by BMW as a result of a recall to resolve cylinders bores failure.

The car comes with an MOT to October 2021 - the personal plate will be retained by the owner and the car will be re-issued with an age-related item (N501 XRJ).

We have actioned our usual checks; Seller ID, V5C, HPi.

Yes. As mileage has been very low each year when my engineer arranged MOT vehicle was checked. Oil was changed twice between service. This car has been loved and cared for. Not much work has been needed but nothing has been overlooked
