The Elan M100 is maturing nicely into a 'modern classic' status - heritage, pop-up headlights and a lot of style for the money.

The Elan M100 was a step change car for Lotus - it was their most expensive car to develop in their history at £35m, but of course they had the backing of General Motors that acquired the company a few years earlier in 1986.

Back then the Elan looked like a thing from the future - especially compared to the newly launched and cheaper Mazda MX-5 that harked back to the '60s in its design principles.

M100 cars have remained low in prices over the last couple of decades, however, they are now gaining traction due to the low numbers produced, just under 4k, and also due to the fact they are simply a good looking car with plenty of 'modern classic' appeal.

This is a nice little example having a good amount of history and in great shape, oh and yes, it's a Lotus - a proper petrolheads' brand.

Meet the owner

It's been a great little sports car to own - it just makes you happy to drive and turns heads wherever it goes.

Paul and Jacqueline, the owners, bought the car about three years ago from a friend and they have enjoyed their ownership ever since. However, they really haven't driven the car as much as they had hoped and so they have asked us to find a new owner.

Exterior

Every petrolhead should own a car with pop-up headlights once in their life - this is a very affordable way of ticking that box.

Wheels and Tyres

The original fitment alloys looks in good condition - there's just a few marks as you can see in the images and videos.

Mitchelin Pilot Exalto tyres are fitted that have excellent tread.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks really good across the car - the panel gaps are good and the doors open and close well as you'd expect and can see in the videos.

The underside also looks to be in good condition.

Paint

White just seems to really suit this car - it shows of the lines and curves really well and we think gives it a more modern feel too.

The paint looks good and is in line with the age / mileage of the car - we just noticed a slight blended colour on the front bumper.

Being picky we noticed a few issues, i.e. a scratch on the door mirror and a few stone chips / marks on the car. However, considering this car is now over thirty years old, it's doing really well.

Glass and Trim

Both look to be in really good condition with no issues to note.

The hood is in very good condition too as you'll see in the media pack. We did just notice a slight unevenness on the passenger side where it meets the front windscreen in the closed position - it may just need a little fettling.

Interior

Functional and driver focused - presented in good and original condition.

Seats and Carpets

The interior colour combination looks great as a compliment to the white exterior - the white insets and piping really sets it off.

The seats are excellent - there's very little wear indeed, even on the driver's seat / bolster.

The carpets look original and would benefit from a valet.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition and presents well. It would benefit from a Sunday afternoon detail and we think it will look even better; especially considering the condition of the seats and other trim.

We just noticed a few small scratches on the plastic fascia of the binnacle.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

It's great to see the original steering wheel and gear stick - they both look in good condition and in line with the age and mileage of the car.

Mechanics

Of course Lotus cars are renowned for their driving experience - this little lightweight car won't disappoint.

Engine and Gearbox

Lotus fitted the Isuzu 1,588cc DOHC / 16V engine, however, they made significant changes - all those changes gave the car a big increase in power and outputted 130bhp giving in a lightweight body.

The engine started from cold with no issues and sounded good - please watch the video to see for yourself.

Suspension and Brakes

Paul assures us the car's suspension is in good order and there are no issues when out on a drive.

The most recent MOT on the 9th April this year had no advisories mentioned.

The Drive

Of course due to current restrictions we couldn't go out on our usual 'on the road' video, however, Paul assures us the car drives really well with no issues to report.

Electrics and Other

Electrics are limited on this driver focused car, however, Paul reports all items work as expected.

A great usable Elan that's in good condition and comes with the majority of past MOTs, a recent MOT and is ready for the summer.

This car has clearly been looked after during its life and presents in very good condition with all its original factory fitments.
