Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The Chimaera is a no-nonsense sports car that demands total focus when driven hard yet delivers outstanding handling and a beautiful V8 soundtrack.

TVR is notorious for breaking the mould and doing things a little differently. The Blackpool born company started around 1947 and has produced some of the most iconic lightweight sports cars the UK has ever seen.

The Chimaera hits the sweet spot between a highly focused performance car and a useable weekend toy. Under the lightweight fibreglass bonnet, you'll find the Rover V8 with its simple and strong mechanics. And underneath the body, the Chimaera was based on the same tubular chassis as the Griffith, but with a slight focus on comfort and more luggage space. It quickly became TVR's best selling model, surpassing the Griffith and appraised for its handling balance.

This Chimaera is a real drivers car. ~61,800 miles on the clock, 6 former keepers, manual and finished in the popular colour of "Cooper Green" with a tan leather interior. This example is waiting for a new owner to put some more miles on the clock.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Andy the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

These cars are such a joy to drive, with instant performance and excellent handling, it never fails to put a smile on my face.

Andy is a serial car enthusiast, a number of cars in his collection are TVRs and Lotus, drivers cars that have a big power to weight ratio. Having owned a number of Chimaera in the past, he was keen to get another recently, to reminisce and relive the experience. He purchased this drivers example 9 months ago and has done just that.

With a Tuscan already in the stable, and some other cars that need some attention, Andy is ready to part ways with Chimaera. He'll be happy to answer any questions you have in the comments section below.

Exterior

A slick and distinctive lightweight fibreglass shell, finished in a handsome Cooper Green.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with 5 spoke TVR wheels. There are minor signs of age, in line with the mileage of the car, the alloys are starting to show lacquer peel and have some small areas of curbing.

The front wheels are fitted with Bridgestones, and at the rear Toyo Proxies, the tyres appear in great condition with no signs of cracking. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this TVR looks generally good, a solid example with most recent years of MOTs matching this too. Shut lines and panel gaps all look good on the car too.

Please take a look at the exterior videos and photographs for a detailed tour.

Paint

The Cooper Green colour looks great on this TVR. The deep green colour is consistent and looks even across each panel. This is a drivers car rather than a show queen, there are small areas of stone chips, inline with the age and mileage, and on the underside of the front bumper there are some scratches with the car being so low.

Please take a look at the photographs to see the paint for yourself.

Glass and Trim

The glass appears overall in good condition, we noticed two very small stone chips on the front windscreen. The rear windscreen is in great condition with no signs of creasing or heavy wear. The passenger wing mirror is a little loose, and the driver wing mirror glass has a small area of corrosion.

The rear lights have been given a smoked effect along with the front fog lights. The glass seals are in very good condition.

Interior

A snug cabin that is focused around the driver, leather and wood veneer to give the cabin some luxury.

Seats and Carpets

The tan leather interior looks in good original condition throughout, clearly with signs of use, but no terrible tears etc.

Small creases are present in line with the age and mileage of the car. The carpets are in great condition throughout and nicely match the exterior paintwork.

Dashboard

The dashboard is clean with white dials and a burr walnut veneer dash. There are some cracks running through the walnut burl, these cars are all about the connected driving experience rather than an award winning cabin.

Take a look at the video review to see the detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in great original condition, along with the aluminium gearstick, and handbrake.

We love the small and discrete short-shifting gearstick with the black sports steering wheel - very driver-focused.

Please take a look at the photos of the interior to really appreciate this race car.

Mechanics

Combine a whopping 4L Rover V8 with a super lightweight body and you'll get the Chimaera a performance-focused legend.

Engine and Gearbox

In the early '80s TVR approached Andy Rouse with a view to using his race-developed 3.9L Rover V8 in the TVR 350i. In the end, Rouse's race V8 wasn't used for cost reasons yet the concept was passed on to an alternative engineering firm that produced a rare variant with 93.5mm bores, flat-topped pistons, and a high-lift camshaft to give a compression ratio of 10.5:1.

The bulk of the engine production was undertaken by North Coventry Kawasaki that was bought by TVR to become their in-house engine division known as TVR Power.

Please watch the cold start video to see the 4L Rover V8 jump into life, and come up to temperature smoothly.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension consisted of all-around independent, unequal-length double wishbones and coil-over gas dampers assisted by anti-roll bars.

The front disc brakes were 239 mm and rear discs were 253 mm, servo-assisted with front/rear split dual circuits. There is a cable-operated hand brake for the rear wheels.

Andy reports the suspension and brakes work faultlessly, stopping on-demand performance. When we had a closer look at the wheels we were impressed at how clean the calipers, pads, and discs were.

The Drive

Previous TVR models have been reported to be unruly beasts on the road. The Chimaera is something different, it hits the sweet spot for many sitting somewhere between a widow maker and a useable weekend toy.

Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car on the road.

Electrics and Other

The Chimaera is packed with electrical features far ahead of its time, we love the push to open door switches, and dials within the cabin.

Andy reports all the switches, lights and buttons work as they should.

History and Paperwork

A performance-focused car designed to go fast, handle well, and look good while doing so. With only 2,200 left on the roads, buy while they're still accessible!

The car comes with a healthy stack of MOT reports, receipts, and service history, dating back to the car's production. The previous owners have had all the mechanical work carried out when required, and with a little cosmetic TLC, it would really elevate the car to the next level.

This is a drivers car rather than a show pony, and Andy has set the reserve on this car accordingly. He'll be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

What age (dot code) are the tyres please? Also, how much tread on them?

Hi James,
I have just had a look through my notes. The rear (Toyo T1R) are date coded 05 14. There were no dates visible on the fronts .

I did however note that all the tyres had a lot of tread and no signs of cracking whatsoever on all 4.

I hope this helps.
