Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Britain's most popular sports car, the MGB offers performance, honest charm and mechanical simplicity, found here in this rally-inspired form.

There are many reasons why the MGB is so popular, perhaps it's the hardy mechanics that still come with performance not to be sniffed at for a classic like this.

Not only is the MGB GT incredibly fun to drive, they look great with their sleek and attractive body lines. The MGB was first introduced to the world in 1962 and was produced until 1980. Not many cars offer the same practicality and parts availability today with an estimated 23,000 still on UK roads, they may not be particularly exclusive, but the Pininfarina-styled cars still provide that authentic classic car experience.

This particular example was given a total makeover by current owner Steve. A fresh respray, racing decals and rally-focused parts including an Escort MK1 quad lights setup just a few modifications he has added to this classic.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Steve the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always wanted to carry out my own rally inspired MGB build, it was a lot of fun and this is the end result.

Steve bought the car around 7 years ago, and set out to create a rally inspired creation with his partner. It wasn't built for actual competition, just a very cool creation to enjoy and have some fun with. Fibre-glass wings to give the car that aggressive race stance coupled with Minilite gold wheels, what a look.

To finish the package, Steve has fitted 8-ball graphics and vinyl lettering and decals that can be removed. After running out of space to keep the car, he's decided to put it up for sale. He'll be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

A Pininfarina-designed rear hatch gives the MGBGT hatchback an elegant and sporty fast back design.

Wheels and Tyres

Gold Minilite wheels are fitted on this MGB GT rally inspired creation, they appear in excellent condition like new on each corner of the car and look perfect as a contrast to the black paintwork.

A full-size unused spare is also sold with the car (no tyre present). The tyres also look in excellent condition with lots of tread, Nankang Toursport tyres are fitted and dated 2017.

Bodywork

The MGBGT looks to be in great condition all around and seems to have no troublesome areas that we could notice. The panel fits looks to be good for an '80s classic.

Steve has fitted lightweight racing rear and front fibreglass wings and dirt shields on the front to protect the car. Please take a look at the detailed photos and videos for a closer look at the bodywork on this car. One thing you'll notice is some age related cracking to the finishing filler on the front scuttle and lower rear quarters, but other than that it's in great condition.

Paint

Steve has carried out a complete respray of the car, a gloss black finish that looks even in coverage and colour across every panel. As seen in the paperwork, Steve has spent some money giving the car a proper send-off, with adhesive vinyl lettering and graphics.

When getting very close and under the car, we did notice a very small crack in the paint on the rear arches. Take a look at the extensive media for a closer look at the paintwork in closer detail.

Glass and Trim

The car is fitted with its original brightwork, which appears in great condition across the car along with the rest of the trim. Steve has also fitted MK1 escort rally light brackets and light to complete the look.

The original MG glass appears to be present and in line with the rest of the car, in great condition throughout.

Interior

Continuing with the rally inspiration, the car is fitted with bucket seats and a lot of the carpet has been taken out too.

Seats and Carpets

Corbeau Forza Sport 2000 bucket seats are fitted within the MGB GT, both appears in excellent condition with very little signs of use. Blue 4-point harnesses are also fitted.

When opening the door we did notice a little area of wear, the seller informs us this was caused by a seat belt buckle getting trapped. New door cards have been fitted, and the carpets show age in areas in this rally inspired cabin.

Dashboard

The black dashboard appears in great condition and displays a pleasing patina. We noticed one very small crack near the radio controls. Steve reports the instruments and controls are in good working order.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and the gear-knob appear in good original condition inline with the age and mileage of the car. The car is a 4-speed manual with overdrive, the overdrive is reported to be functioning well.

Mechanics

Brisk power and torque from the B-Series pushrod engine, K&N filter on a twin Weber for this MGB.

Engine and Gearbox

Powered by a feisty 1.8L B-series inline 4, Steve has carried out various tasteful modifications to extract more power. He's fitted an uprated fan, K&N air filter, and carried out regular servicing to maintain the condition.

The car started the first time in our cold start video which we conducted for the mechanical video. Take a look to see the engine bay in more detail.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension offered in the MGB was much softer than its predecessor with independent front suspension. Steve informs us the car drives just as it should and stops on demand too.

The Drive

The archetypal British sports car, offering great handling and performance, a great base for a rally inspired car.

Steve really loves to get the MGB GT out when he can, mentioning a very sporty and enjoyable ride every-time.

Electrics and Other

The car is fitted with an aftermarket radio, quad rally light set up in the front. All electrical items are said to be functional. It is also fitted with an electronic distributor, so no need to worry about the points on this one.

History and Paperwork

A UK RHD, rally-inspired car with a fresh lick of paint and racing-ready graphics, This MGB GT is ready to be enjoyed.

This MGB comes with limited paperwork, Steve having bought the car to create something personal to his taste. As the car has just qualified for historic status, Steve has sent the V5 off to the DVLA and it's back with the car registered as Historic.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5, HPi.
