Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner and Automotive Photographer.

Following the continued success of the 3 Series with the E36, it was in 1992 that BMW unveiled the long awaited E36 M3.

Launched in 1992, the E36 M3 was the next generation of BMW’s high performance sports coupe.

With the new design came a good level of practicality for the second generation M3, more room, creature comforts and easy to use on a daily basis, with the main focus point being on the new 6-cylinder engine. This was originally launched as a 3.0-litre producing 286 bhp. Definitely classed as a sleeper, the M3 was restrained visually with just a few giveaways such as the aerodynamically designed mirrors, front and rear aprons to the bumpers, and 17” wheels, plus lowering the model by 30mm ensured the handling was on point. If you didn't spot these differences it was the sheer power of the M3 that gave it away as something quite special.

In 1993, the convertible model was added to the range, offering the same performance and perfect for sunny days to enjoy the car with the roof down. Two years later, the M3 got a slight facelift with some minor cosmetic changes, but the biggest change of all was the addition of the 3.2 litre straight six, like the one we have here.

Anthony purchased the M3 in 2016 and has only covered ~1,500 miles in it. With such little use he has decided it’s a shame to leave it sitting there and would rather another enthusiast take ownership of the classic M3.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Anthony the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I'm a Ford fan at heart, but I've grown to love and appreciate this awesome M3.

Anthony purchased this wonderful 1999 BMW M3 in 2016 after selling his Ford RS Turbo. Not wanting to buy a car that would lose money, the idea was to purchase something fun that would also retain its value, unlike a newer car that would depreciate.

With this in mind the search was on for a modern classic which could be enjoyed just as much as the RS Turbo. Anthony started his broad search and came across some adverts for M3 coupes for sale and figured they could be a contender, just because of the following M3s have, and importantly, they fitted into his price range. He viewed a few coupes and was disappointed, but then Anthony spotted this convertible M3. As he was used to only driving the car during the summer months anyway, the convertible made perfect sense. With a viewing completed a deal was struck and Anthony became the owner of this E36 M3 convertible.

Since owning the car Anthony has grown to love the shape of the Convertible M3, but has still only managed to clock up ~1,500 miles in his ownership. This is due to the lack of free time and work commitments and it is what has brought on the sale of the car. Anthony feels it would be much better appreciated by an owner that could use it more.

Anthony will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

The M3 is finished in the striking Titanium Silver with a black hood - the perfect colour combo for this modern classic.

Wheels and Tyres

The M style double-spoke wheels on the BMW present in excellent condition, with no corrosion to the faces of the classic look M3 wheel.

The tyres are all matching Bridgestone Potenza.

Please have a look at the video and photo review of the exterior for more detailed view.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this E36 M3 is in excellent condition. All the panel gaps around the car look to align just as BMW intended.

During our visit we didn't spot any obvious dinks down the flanks of the car, everything is crisp and sharp.

The hood looks to have been replaced at some point and it therefore is in excellent condition. There are a couple of crease marks as expected, but Anthony does store the car with the roof up to minimise this.

Please see the gallery for more detailed images.

Paint

Titanium Silver is a lovely colour, which looks amazing in all lights, and certainly makes the M3 stand out. The paintwork is in excellent condition all over with just the odd mark as you would expect to find on such an honest car.

There are a handful of stone chips to the front as you'd expect, some of which have been touched in. In addition to this, there are a small number of light marks on the nearside of the car, small scuff to the front corner bumper and on the rear bumper, and some faint scratches to the rear quarter panel and bootlid. These are only very light scuffs rather than a scrape and may even lighten with a polish. Please see the image gallery for more detailed shots.

Glass and Trim

The windows are all in excellent condition, with no obvious scratches or chips which we could see at the time of our visit. The trim around the windows is all in very good order. The rear window, as the roof has been mainly up, is nice and clear, with no creasing or blooming.

The headlights and fog lights are bright, clear and free from any noticeable chips and the same can be said for the M3 rear lights.

We have captured high resolution photos and videos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the exterior.

Interior

Grey napper leather greets you as you enter the cabin of the M3 - with a fine wood trim to finish off the luxurious feel.

Seats and Carpets

The seats in the M3 are finished with grey napper leather code N5TT. These are electric and working as they should with no wear to the bolsters and just some slight stretching to the leather.

The rear of the car does not appear to have had any heavy use in its life, so is therefore in excellent condition.

Matching the seats, the door cards have leather inserts which are all in good condition, with no scuffs to the lower sections. The carpets are in excellent condition having been covered with mats, and then rubber mats to the front have ensured that these stay in a nice clean condition with no obvious signs of wear to them.

The boot area is clean and tidy. There is a BMW first aid kit together with the warning triangle, and nice to see complete is the tool kit. There is a full size spare wheel which does have a couple of marks to it. Part of the in-car entertainment is the Harman Kardon subwoofer.

Dashboard

The dashboard of the M3 has no signs of any damage or scuffs. The instruments have no warning lights displayed, and the odometer is showing a reading of ~90,406 miles. The dash has a fine wood trim, which is in excellent condition across the dash and onto the centre console.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed shots.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good condition with just some light shining to the outer edge of the rim, which we would say looks like it matches the mileage. The M colour stitching to the inside edge is in good condition.

The fine wood gear knob matches the dash trim and is in nice condition, with the 1-6 numbers, together with the M badge, clearly visible.

We have captured high resolution photos and videos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior.

Mechanics

321 bhp 3.2 litre straight six, rear wheel drive and 6 speed manual - do you really need any more?

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.2 straight six starts up just as you would expect and sounds fantastic exiting through the twin tailpipes. The car is reported to pull excellent through the 6 speed manual gearbox, with the gear change feeling nice and precise.

Anthony is happy to report that the M3 has been excellent to own. Having just carried out routine servicing the car has been extremely reliable.

Suspension and Brakes

The car sits nice and level, and it is good to see that the BMW has not been messed with, in terms of lowering it. It is as BMW intended.

The discs look to be in good condition with no lip to the edges. Anthony reports that these bring the car to a halt nice and straight with no juddering.

The Drive

Probably the perfect practical car, with a good sized boot, big enough to seat 4, plenty of power when needed and perfect for the summer months with the roof down, not to mention the looks of the E36, it turns heads wherever it goes.

With a 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph, the M3 is no slouch. With excellent handling characteristics, BMW designed the car to be enjoyed, and you certainly will.

Electrics and Other

Everything in the car is reported to be working just as it should. The windows operate correctly. The roof is a typical speed for cars of this era, but is working as it should when opening and closing.

The only upgrade on the car has been the addition of the Kenwood head unit. This is still connected to the Harman Kardon speakers and subwoofer, which are all working as they should.

The switchgear over the dashboard, including the electric window switches, all look to be in excellent condition with no noticeable wear to be seen.

History and Paperwork

An impressive 13 service stamps has kept the M3 in tip top condition - with the last service carried out at the current mileage.

Anthony has kept receipts for everything regarding parts or servicing, which is nice to see. There is the original M3 owners' handbook and service book which shows 13 stamps.

The last service was carried out on 31st August 2021, where it also received a brake fluid change.

The MOT on the M3 is valid until 31st May 2022

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and the vehicle is HPI clear.
