Introduction

Kristina Leikaite
Professional Consigner

A ground-breaking car, with a spacious cabin and a large V8, the 928 made a far better grand tourer than the 911 ever could.

The 928 is a luxury grand tourer produced by Porsche between 1978 and 1995, and was originally intended to replace the companies iconic 911. It quickly became the top-of-the-line Porsche available at the time, and most Porsche executives believed such a flagship model would have a much wider appeal than the compact 911.

The 928 took the power, poise, and handling from the 911 and combined it with refinement, comfort, and luxurious equipment to offer customers the perfect middle ground between a luxury sedan and a small sports car. It was the company's first V8-powered model, and still to this day the only Porsche coupé powered by a front-mounted V8 engine.

This example, coming out of 17 years ownership, it's a tidy package that has been well cared for over time. However, due to living abroad and not getting full use of the car, the owner has decided to put it up for auction with us.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kristina after meeting Stephen the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Over 17 years of ownership I can truly say this is one incredible car, just listen to that V8 and look at the iconic retro design.

Stephen purchased the car back in 2004, after always fancying a 928, the shape and pop-up headlights along with the V8 really sold it to him. Due to living abroad, Stephen has had the car stored and maintained close to where his dad lives in Darlington.

Unfortunately in 2008, Stephen had a spin on a greasy grate cover causing the car to be written off by the insurance company (Cat C). Stephen bought the car back and took it to an independent 928 specialist in Marple where it received 4x new Porsche alloys, a new torque tube installed along with the rear bumper, and tail light before being VOSA tested, it passed with no issues. Please feel free to ask Stephen any questions you may have about this lovely 928, in the comments below.

Exterior

One highly aerodynamic body shape with aluminium doors and bonnet and body-coloured wraparound plastic bumpers, a radical design for its time.

Wheels and Tyres

In 2008 Stephen had 4x new Porsche alloys fitted (non-standard for the 1990 S4). The wheels present in good condition, and really give this 928 a sporty stance. The do look to have suffered some scuffs from curbs though, and so would benefit from being refurbished.

The cars wheels are wrapped in Bridgestone tyres which look to have a great amount of tread left for the new custodian to drive away with peace of mind.

Bodywork

Overall, the bodywork has a very clean finish. All the panel gaps and body lines look very straight and true, a good example of Porsche engineering. Known to many as the "Land Shark", the design has matured with age, definitely an iconic model in the marques history.

Please take time to study all the high-resolution images and videos to appreciate the condition of the bodywork.

Paint

Finished in a lovely 'Pine-Green Metallic' which will certainly turn heads wherever you go. The overall condition of the paint looks to be very good, the front and rear bumpers appear to have a few stone chips and marks, in line with the age and mileage, and some very small areas of lacquer peel on the rear spoiler. The paint has an even finish and colour across all of the car.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Glass and Trim

The condition of the glass and trim appears to be in line with the age and mileage of the car, great all around.

We captured a video of the sun roof fully operational, without fault in a quick fashion, this can be seen in the exterior video.

Interior

A luxurious cabin awaits you, dark green leather-trimmed interior with contrast cream leather seats.

Seats and Carpets

Electronically adjustable cream leather seats with beige cloth inserts and green pipping are fitted within this classy grand tourer. Cloth seats are fitted in the rear, all 4 seats are in great condition, with some very slight common creasing to the leather seat bolsters.

The door cards, roof lining, and carpets match the overall very good condition. We have captured high-resolution photos and videos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the hard-wearing and high-quality Porsche interior.

Dashboard

The dashboard looks in great overall condition. Stephen reports that all the switches and controls are also fully functional to his knowledge, and in good condition with very little signs of wear.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original Porsche steering wheel finished in dark green appears in great condition along with the black leather-wrapped automatic gear selector.

Please take a look at the extensive photos and videos for a closer look at the cabin space of this 928 S4.

Mechanics

The star of the show, the first front-mounted Porsche V8 offering an incredible 316BHP to tap into.

Engine and Gearbox

In 1987, the Porsche 928 V8 grew to 5.0L and now sported a twin-cam head with four valves per cylinder, power increased to 316BHP but the big difference was the low-end torque. This block was now coupled to a Mercedes-Benz four-speed auto and an intelligent cooling system featured louvres in the air intake that were computer-controlled to change their angle in line with the coolant temperature. Clever stuff for the late 80s.

We captured a 'cold start video' where you can see the car spring into life, along with videos underneath the 928 and around the engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

Both the suspension and brakes are said to be in good working order, and always attended to when they've required attention, as well as the rebuild mentioned before.

Please take a look at the photo and videos of the brakes and suspension for a closer look.

The Drive

The perfect middle ground between a sports car and a full-sized luxury saloon, these 928's in their later S4 guise have become very collectable.

Stephen loved getting this car out on warm weekends, and will be sad to see it go after many happy years of ownership, however will be happy seeing it getting used and enjoyed by a like-minded 928 enthusiast.

Electrics and Other

Stephen has reported the electrical system is in line with the rest of the condition of the car and in fully working order to his knowledge.

The car is highly original, apart from the non-standard 928 S4 alloys fitted during the repair.

History and Paperwork

This Porsche was ahead of its time, this UK RHD example in a beautiful colourway ready for new ownership.

The 928 S4 comes with a clean MOT history and has remained in storage for the previous 10 years. Stephen reports he'll have a fresh MOT issued before the end of the sale. Finished in an attractive Pine-Green, and matching leather dashboard/interior, we know this will be a 928 S4 that will attract a lot of attention.

The car was marked as a Cat C insurance loss in 2008, and since then has had 4x new Porsche alloys, torque tube, rear bumper and tail light before being VOSA tested and re-registered.
