A great opportunity to own a cherished example of the pinnacle of Maserati’s V8 Coupe range; the GranSport V8.

To create the GranSport Maserati took inspiration from its Trofeo Coupé racing cars. The 4.2 litre V8 engine was tweaked to deliver more power. The six-speed Cambiocorsa paddle shift transmission was recalibrated for quicker shifts and the exhaust, equipped with bypass valves, was also specially tuned to "growl" on start-up and full throttle. We can certainly confirm the effectiveness of this particular enhancement. The F136 Ferrari based engine in this example sounds amazing. For the GranSport Maserati also fitted 10mm lowered, stiffened suspension as well as adding some extra drama to the cabin and some additional assertive styling touches.

This particular example finished in "Nero Carbonio" over "Pearl Beige" with ~73,600 miles recorded, has just been through a service with performance specialists Shiltech at a cost of ~£2,700. This example has the all important contrast sports seats with technical cloth, and with the clutch wear reading showing 80%

Meet the owner

I love the style and incredible sound the V8 makes - the colour combinations are perfect and it always draws attention where it goes.

Ian, the current owner, spent a considerable time finding this car, wanting to own only the best example of the GranSport he could find for his budget. He certainly feels it was worth the wait and has been enjoying the “grin factor” associated with this GranSport over the summer.

Ian was particularly drawn to this example as the previous owner had spent over £7,000 on the car in the last 4,000 miles. This work is documented in the paperwork package and even includes the re-embroidering of the Maserati trident on the headrests.

Reluctantly Ian is now looking to sell his Maserati as a new job calls for significant UK travel for which a car is provided.

Exterior

The lustrous metallic Nero Carbonio paintwork of this car accentuates the muscular yet elegant shape of the GranSport’s coupe body.

Wheels and Tyres

The 19 inch 15 spoke alloy wheels are designed to mimic the fronds of the Maserati trident and suit the car very well. The condition appears to be good with no obvious signs of kerb rash or lacquer or paint deterioration. The heads of the wheel bolts would possibly benefit from an abrasive polish in the near future.

The car is shod with Pirelli P Zero 265/30 ZR19 tyres front and rear and whilst all perfectly serviceable they may need replacing in the near future.

Bodywork

The bodywork presents very well for a 16 year old car and no obvious dings or dents were noted in our three hours with the car.

The panel gaps and fit and finish of the doors, bonnet and boot lid speak very well for the quality control of the Maserati Modena factory during this period.

Paint

This GranSport has clearly been regularly detailed and cherished throughout its life. The metallic Nero Carbonio paint appeals thick and lustrous and highly reflective and a testament to a garaged existence - Ian also tells us the car was ceramic coated too,

There are the usual chips dotted around the front of the car and look to be in line with the age / mileage of the car.

The extremities of the underside sill and front and rear valance paintwork would benefit from additional detailing, but no deterioration in paint or lacquer finish was noted in these areas.

Glass and Trim

The glass appears unmarked with no chips, scratches or imperfections noted. The trim surrounding the glazed areas of the car present very well and are free from any discernible faults or flaws.

The windows drop by a couple of millimeters on door opening and re-close quickly and inconspicuously as the designers intended.

Interior

Maserati went to town on the interior details of the GranSport making it an inviting, comfortable and surprisingly spacious place to spend time.

Seats and Carpets

The highly contoured sports seats in this GranSport are faced in a winning combination of pearl beige leather and nickel grey technical cloth. The carpets are presented in deep black. All seat fronts and backs appear to have no rips, tears or areas of heavy wear in evidence. Slight watermarking to the technical fabric of the front seats can just be seen in certain lights but mostly this is invisible. The re-embroidered Maserati tridents to the front seat headrests and the centre section of the rear seat are a particularly attractive feature.

The front seats are electrically moved forward on the operation of the seat back lever and then return, quietly to their original position once the seat back is returned to upright. This operation can be seen in the interior video.

The carpets and nickel grey headlining appear in an unworn condition and no areas of concern were noted.

Dashboard

The dash features a well crafted combination of peal beige stitched leather and nickel grey carbon fibre effect fabric. The dial set is comprehensive and the large tachometer features unique GranSport branding.

The iconic Maserati oval analogue clock graces the centre console of the car and the noticeable leather aroma do help to make this a particularly memorable cabin.

No issues with the dash were noted during our time with the car.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is a satisfyingly chunky affair in a combination of carbon fibre and padded leather. The presentation of the wheel appears faultless and the paddle shift markings are clear and unworn.

The handbrake and gear selector console is a unique to GranSport carbon fibre item. It had to be narrowed in this model to allow for the curvaceous sports seats.

The levers and carbon fibre finish of this area appears unmarked.

Mechanics

The combination of the Ferrari derived F136 V8 engine and the specially tuned GranSport exhaust make for an aural experience to be savoured.

Engine and Gearbox

Like the interior, the engine bay of this Maserati is a special sight. The muscular shapes of the crackle finished manifold and cam covers broadcast that this is a special power unit. The engine bay and underneath of the bonnet are clean and tidy and just invite you to make the slightest excuse to “pop the bonnet” and share the pleasure.

Ian was specifically drawn to this car because of the level of recent expenditure by the previous owner. Well over of £7,000 worth of specialist mechanical and cosmetic attention has been lavished on this car in the last 4,000 miles or so.

There were no issues during the cold start process (please see video) and Ian reports that the car drives as you would expect for a premium sporting marque, with no issues reported with either engine or gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

The Maserati’s suspension set up is a sophisticated light alloy double wishbone configuration aided by a dynamic adaptive damping system known as “Skyhook.” Ian reports that this system is working as intended and it provides a sporting but highly responsive ride.

The brakes are large, vented discs all round and appear to be in unscored condition and good working order.

The Drive

Ian reports that to drive the GranSport in a grin inducing and memorable experience. The car originally boasted 395bhp and a 0-60mph time starting with a 4. Ian suggests that this remains entirely plausible today.

Just one small thing to note, Ian reports a slight rattle which he thinks is the exhaust shield.

We witnessed and filmed the cold start and gently revving of the engine which was performed faultlessly.

Electrics and Other

During our inspection the many electric refinements, including seats and windows, worked as expected, however, there is no reception on the radio and the power mirrors don't fold.

Ian asserts that everything else works as you would expect from a luxury sports tourer car of this nature.

History and Paperwork

A key factor in the current owner’s purchase of this car is the level of attention the car has received recently.

Please review the service book and invoices in the paperwork section to see all the known history on the car - a significant amount of money has been spent in the last few years with respected Maserati specialists. There is a significant bill in 2016 totalling nearly £5k, however, the ink is faded so difficult to read in our pictures but it does mention a 'clutch' - there are close ups of each section for you to see and Ian has contacted the specialist to see if they can find the original. If we get more information then we'll add it here.

There's an invoice in 2015 for the parts required for a cam belt chance - so it's assumed this was actioned and the last time it was done.

Various original owners books are included as well as two original keys and stereo code.

We've done all our usual checks on the seller, V5 and it's HPi clear.
