Last of the old school TR Triumphs, the TR6 was a worthy send-off with its sharp chisel-chinned exterior and fuel injected engines.

The TR6 was built between 1968 and 1976. The first bodies were built in Liverpool, and the '6' was the best-seller of the TR range. Out of the ~91,850 produced, only ~8,370 were ever sold in the UK. The frame, engine, running gear, body tub, and door were very similar to the Michelotti-styled TR5, the design of the front and rear of the car was restyled by Karmann of Germany, yet rumors claim the squared-off tail design was a Michelotti prototype.

This example is coming from a long ownership of 21 years, and has been used by the owner for trips on the continent. It's a solid example finished in the factory period colour of "Mimosa", and over the vendors ownership they have implemented some choice upgrades to make it suitable for touring.

Meet the owner

Ownership of this TR6 has been a blast, I've definitely been a hands on kind of owner.

A mechanical design engineer, Doug has made this TR6 a solid and reliable example, over his ~21 year ownership. The keen eyed amongst you will spot the larger wheels and Mazda seats, typical upgrades for a car like this. Some other elements under the hood are a lot less obvious though such as the stainless steel exhaust manifold and full stainless exhaust, aluminium radiator with Kenlowe fan and also high power starter motor and fuel pump.

It's a remarkably solid car, testament to careful and correct storage. In amongst the mechanical upgrades to the car, Doug also applied a fresh coat of the Triumph Mimosa colour to the car in the past. He's offering up the spares to sell with the auction too; the original convertible roof with frame in place of the "Surrey Top" currently fitted, original size wheels and some other assorted spares too. Exterior

Karmann's design team modernise the design on the TR range, we love the period Mimosa yellow colour on this example.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with Minator wheels, they present in excellent condition across all four corners. The wheels are wrapped in larger profile tyres than a stock TR6, 205/70 R15, Doug is supplying a spare set of wheels to go with the car.

Bodywork

The more chiseled design from the team at Karmann did away with much of the old TR's curves for a much more sleek and modern look.

Doug has kept the car dry stored in a garage, and that showed, on our visit we didn't spot any corrosion. The panels all look in great condition and free from any major dents etc. One area for improvement Doug mentioned he would action to further improve the car is fettling with the panel gaps. Paint

Finished in the Triumph colour of "Mimosa", the yellow paintwork certainly gives the car a unique standout appeal. The paintwork on the car looks even in colour across all the panels. Doug actioned the respray some time ago, it looks like he applied a thick coat across the car and we think a machine polish could help to reduce some of the visible "orange peel". Being an older job he completed, there are a handful of nicks on the leading edges of the panels when you look closely, view the image gallery to see the detail.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks great on this example, and the brightwork looks in really good condition. The car is currently fitted with a "Surrey Top" which Doug preferred for touring. Going with the car at sale is the original TR6 hood and frame.

Interior

A classic British interior finished in black with wood veneer dash, and a choice upgrade make it an easy place to get settled.

Seats and Carpets

Fitted with Mazda seats in black leather, they offer a much more supportive and comfortable seating position, perfect for long journeys. The car is fitted with black carpets, a smart finished interior. Looking under the carpets, the floorpans look in good condition with no signs of damp. Doug has the original seats for the car which will be included in the sale, but these are in need of refurbishment.

Dashboard

The wood veneer dashboard looks in good period condition, the black top free from any significant marks and no signs of warping that you can get on classics like this. The rest of the black interior like the door cards look in good condition too. View the photo gallery to see all the detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with a large handled wood rimmed steering wheel, it looks in good condition as photographed. The gearstick looks to be a period item, finished with its black gaitor.

Mechanics

A solid and reliable TR6, this car has had some upgrades to ensure it could transport the owner to the continent and back worry free.

Engine and Gearbox

Doug has carried out much of the maintenance on this car himself being a hands on owner. He's taken the car touring on the continent in the past and has said it has always been reliable.

The car has been upgraded with a stainless steel exhaust manifold and a full length stainless exhaust system. To help with the start-up, a high power starter motor has been fitted. As is the case with many TR6's, Doug mentioned a small oil leak to the gearbox that he thinks a new owner would want to remedy.

We carried out a cold start video on the car, and took it out on a run in the local area as shown in the video review, Doug driving the car and going through the gears with complete confidence.

Suspension and Brakes

Recently Doug has given the braking system an overhaul to ensure the car stops as fast as it starts. On our driving video, we didn't observe any knocks or rattles and felt the ride quality was good on this example.

The Drive

Straight six up front, rear wheel drive, the open top format, it's the archetypal British sports car experience. Doug has set this car up for touring, and used the car as such for many years, it's a car that is ready for a new owner to enjoy and improve over time.

Electrics and Other

Currently fitted with a "Surrey Top", this car will come with the original TR6 hood and frame, a spare set of wheels and some other assorted spares too. You'll notice in the interior pictures that Doug has fitted some useful upgrades like 12V connections in the passenger footwell.

The car has had a new speedo fitted, and also has some electrical upgrades in the form of improved fuel pump in the back and high power starter motor in the front.

History and Paperwork

A solid and usable example, it's been in the same ownership for the past ~21 years and has some upgrades to make the car more reliable for touring installed.

The car comes with a host of MOTs history that charts some of its life, and invoicing from previous owners. Doug has been a hands on owner for the past ~21 years, and so much of the maintenance and upgrades he has carried out. Finished in the original Mimosa colour, it's a welcome change from the red and green TR6s you'll often see.

Hi. I note the tow bar. Please advise what it has been towing? Also has the chassis, floor pans been replaced/welded ?

Hi The previous owner used to tow a motorbike, but that was over 20 years ago. I have never towed anything with it. The rear shock absorbers and springs have been renewed. There has been no welding to the floor or chassis as it wasn’t required
