Launched in 1948, the Morris Minor is an iconic British car loved by many from day one, and still to this day.

Designed under the leadership of Sir Alec Issigonis, the Morris Minor is a British car which made its debut at the Earls Court Motor Show in 1948. Originally, the Morris was available as a two-door saloon or a two-door tourer. In 1950, a four door was introduced, which was only available for export, and was the first model to have the headlights set in the wings, as opposed to low down, either side of the grille, to meet the US safety standards.

To keep the car competitive moving into the 1960’s, in 1956 the Series III Morris Minor was released. The new design came with a broader colour range for the exterior and trim options, and as motorways started to make an appearance, the car was given taller gears to offer a more relaxed cruising speed and a smoother gear change.

This 1961 Series III has been restored by a previous keeper, which was ideal the current owner who wanted a reliable city car. The previous owner also made some sensible modernisations like front disc brakes and having the car run on an alternator. But things change, and now with the car being used less, it is time to find this British classic a new owner.

Meet the owner

For me, the perfect city car is something that’s a classic and also easy to work with - the Morris Minor was just up my street.

Chris purchased this 1961 Morris Minor in June 2019, after searching for a classic to use as a city car. The Minor was perfect, not too big, easy to maintain and importantly it had been restored by the former keeper.

With the car purchased, Chris has enjoyed the Morris around the town, but equally enjoys a run out to the countryside where it never fails to turn heads. As Chris's circumstances have changed, the Morris has not been getting the use it was, and with winter on its way he feels that being left out and unused would not be in the car's best interests, hence the reason for the sale. Curves in all the right places - the beautiful British Morris Minor has a unique look.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels on the Morris are the original steel items painted in white with a chrome Morris hubcap. These present in in good condition, some minor discolouration to the paint on the outer rims.

The tyres are 3 Toyo and 1 Goodyear, which have a good amount of tread remaining for the new keeper. There is also another set of wheels and tyres included with the sale.

Bodywork

The Moggie was restored around 2017, so any areas of concern were dealt with at that time. The driver's door aligns well. The passenger door does need a firmer hand to close it, but this could just be in need of adjustment.

The bonnet and boot look to align as well as you would expect. There is some evidence of some repairs near the rear window on the driver’s side quarter panel, and there is a split in the metal by the rear side window.

Paint

The car is finished in Oxford Blue and was repainted approximately four years ago. There are a few areas on the car which have been touched up since the resto to prevent them from getting any worse. These are noticeable in the roof, around the front windscreen and the rear window areas.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in good condition, with no noticeable scratches to mention. The window seals for the opening quarter windows have started to perish a little as you'd expect with age, but are an easy item to replace.

The chrome work on the Minor all appears to be in good order, with minimal butting to the bumpers. The window trims, door handles and mirror all look to be tarnish free. The headlights are free from any cracks, along with the side repeaters and rear lights. Some pitting has started to appear on the chrome body of the rear lights.

Interior

Basic but functional - it has everything you need and sometimes less is more.

Seats and Carpets

The blue vinyl seats are comfortable and in good used condition, with no obvious signs of excessive wear to them.

The carpet is also blue and is matching throughout. There is some light wear to it, and it has started to come loose from some areas such as the bulkhead. The headlining is cream vinyl and does have a section of damage towards the rear.

Dashboard

The dash is painted to match the exterior and in good condition, with just the odd scratch here and there. The odometer is showing a reading of ~21,204 miles, with the speedometer and fuel gauge working as they should.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel has a leather cover on it, which has started to come unstitched slightly, and the Morris logo has crazed a little with age.

The gear knob is in good order with the numbers legible. The gaiter has split at the bottom, but this is a part which is readily available.

Mechanics

A tried and tested 948cc engine in the Morris - it has been proven many times what a reliable engine it is.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine in the vehicle has had the head gasket replaced and fresh oil and a filter change in October 2021. It has also been upgraded with an alternator at some point, and this has recently been replaced along with the battery.

The gear change is smooth and pulls well through the 4-speed gearbox, which has no untoward noise coming from it. It is believed that during the restoration the rear axle was also refurbished. Watch the video to see the car starting up.

Suspension and Brakes

Another nice upgrade for the Morris Minor is the addition of front disc brakes, giving a much safer feel when driving on today's roads. These are working as they should, bringing the car to a halt straight and even.

The suspension feels nice and firm with no unwanted noises coming from either corner of the car.

The Drive

A British classic which is totally usable in today's busy cities, or just as a weekend classic to enjoy taking out for the day. Chris reports the drive is thoroughly enjoyable which is why he purchased the car, and it never fails to turn heads.

Electrics and Other

Chris reported everything is working as it should to his knowledge. There have even been some green lights fitted to the dash, which flash to notify you that the indicators are on, one of the relays for the indicators has an intermittent fault causing it to flash quickly at times.

History and Paperwork

A stalwart when it comes to British classic cars, this Morris Minor 1000 was purchase restored and used as a city run around, a fresh service in October 2021 and it's ready for sale.

There is not much in the way of paperwork with the car other than photographs of the restoration, which is certainly nice to see. The original owner’s hand book is present, along with two workshop manuals. Looking back through the MOT history online, you will see the car has not covered many miles in the past 10 years, some ~5,000 miles. It has been taken for regular MOTs, which in the main it passed with no advisories in that time.
