Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

Definitely fun for the whole family - the VW Westfalia Continental is the perfect toy for a weekend adventure.

Following the huge success of the T1 Split Screen, 1967 brought us the production of the second generation VW T2. Commonly known as the bay-window, the T2 is slightly larger and heavier than its predecessor, and was given the 47 bhp, 1.6-litre engine. 1971 saw some considerable changes to the T2. The engine was given dual intake ports on each cylinder head, pushing the power to 50bhp. Another change was the addition of disc brakes to the front, and the wheels had holes in them to aid cooling.

Westfalia conversions are the crème de la crème for the VWs, just like the one we have here. A nice low mileage example, with a rebuilt engine and gearbox, new body panels and finished off inside with lots of modern creature comforts.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Andy the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I absolutely love driving the camper - you can just cruise along in a relaxed, stress free state and enjoy it.

Andy is just the second owner of the Westfalia Continental. He purchased it 10 years ago, and it had only done ~52,000 miles. In his 10 year ownership the camper has gone through a sympathetic restoration to the upper part of the bodywork, which needed some attention, but the key thing was that the base and mechanics of the VW were all in good order.

Westfalia are well known for creating a well spec'ed campervan, and Andy has improved on the original interior with some modern touches such as heated seats, front and rear heated windows, electric and gas central heating, and LED lighting inside and out.

Andy will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car, in the comments below.

Exterior

The classic T2 Bay-window Volkswagen never fails to turn heads wherever it goes.

Wheels and Tyres

The Empi 5 spoke style polished alloy wheels look to be in great condition, with no kerb damage. They would benefit from a polish to restore the original shine. The tyres are matching Nankank and have a good amount of tread remaining.

Please see more images of the wheels in the exterior gallery.

Bodywork

The VW has been given a top half restoration some 10 years ago, which saw some new panels fitted.

he panel gaps around the VW look to be all matching, with just the driver's door not quite sitting as flush as the others - this may just be down to needing a little fettle to adjust this.

What better way to give you more space than a pop top roof. This opens and closes with ease providing much more height inside.

Please see the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at the exterior.

Paint

As mentioned, the vehicle was repainted in the white over turquoise colour scheme after the sympathetic restoration. There are some areas with a little surface blistering and micro blistering dotted around the body. If Andy was keeping the van, it was on the to do list to give it a freshen-up.

Again, the images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the camper as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in good condition, with no noticeable scratches, other than general age related marks. The rubbers all appear to be in good order with little perishing. The stainless steel mirrors were fitted last year, so are in excellent condition. The door handles have a nice bright finish and are free from any pitting or tarnishing. The lights around the vehicle look to be in good condition with no splits or cracks.

Please view the exterior gallery for more detailed images.

Interior

The ultimate upgrade for any VW was the Westfalia Continental conversion - offering everything including the kitchen sink.

Seats and Carpets

The front seats have been upgraded to a more comfortable set, which are also heated and have arm rests fitted. These are in excellent condition with no wear to be seen. The rear seat is the original material, which is in excellent order for the age of the vehicle.

The front has been fitted with carpet to replace the original rubber matting, and in the rear, the blue and white vinyl floor tiles offer a nice, easy wipeable floor.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition with no cracks showing, and the fascia is well presented. Andy tells us the instruments are working as they should, and the odometer is reading ~58,291 miles.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original two spoke steering wheel has no obvious signs of excessive wear, and the same can be said for the gear knob, which still has the grain effect clearly to be seen.

We have captured the interior on high resolution images and videos that can be found in the media pack below for you to see the lovely interior of this Westfalia.

Mechanics

The air-cooled engine is a well known popular choice in the T2 - this one has the added benefit of having been rebuilt to 1776cc.

Engine and Gearbox

Inside the engine bay is well presented and shows no areas for concern. The engine is the original, which has been rebuilt (increased to 1766cc) along with the gearbox.

The engine starts up just fine and is reported by Andy to drive well, and it also pulls strongly through the four speed gearbox.

In the video section, you can view the 'cold start' and 'on the road' videos.

Suspension and Brakes

The brakes on the VW have been regularly maintained along with the rest of the camper, and Andy reports that these are working as they should, bringing the vehicle to a halt straight and even.

The suspension feels nice and firm with no unwanted noises coming from either corner of the VW.

The Drive

Just jump in and drive! That is what Andy has done on more than one occasion. No plans, no schedule, what better feeling?

You don’t even have to go far, just the chance to leave the normal day to day life behind is the perfect tonic.

Electrics and Other

Andy has upgraded many parts of the electrical system in the VW, including the switches and lights, which are all reported to be working as they should.

History and Paperwork

A one previous owner UK camper which has clearly seen a lot of love over its 48 year life.

There is a nice history file with the VW, which includes the original handbooks, certificates, sales brochures, invoices for parts and work carried out dating back to the mid 1980’s, and MOT certificates dating back to the early 80’s.

It has been enjoyed by Andy for the past 12 years, where he has upgraded the camper with some modern touches, without moving away from the classic feel of a VW camper van. Now it is time for the much loved van to go to just its third ever owner.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle. DVLA state the camper is 1600c so this needs to be updated by the new owner.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

There are very few pictures of the underside, arches and areas such as cross members. I notice that the suspension components look fairly rusty too. Do you have any detailed photographs of the underside of the van; if so can I please see them? Can you also provide the M-plate details please?
