Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

Looking for a simple, fun, and timeless British classic? The MGB is the car for you, the perfect Sunday driver.

First released to the world in 1962 and produced until 1980, the soft-top sports car formula of the MGB stayed relatively simple throughout. A B-series engine produced 98BHP at 5400RPM, a big step up from the original origins.

The honest charm, good looks and simple mechanics made it hugely successful, shortly becoming Britain's best-selling sports car. With an estimated 23,000 still on UK roads, they may not be particularly exclusive, but the Pininfarina-styled cars still provide that authentic classic car experience.

This example is coming out of 5 years of ownership from retired panel-beater Phil. He's restored this MG MGB Roaster, finished in Old English White over red leather interior. This car is ready to be enjoyed, with all the mechanical and cosmetic jobs already attended to.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Phil the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's been a real joy restoring this classic, she's ready to drive anywhere and everywhere now.

Phil and his wife always dreamed of owning a MG MGB Roadster over their retirement, as it was the perfect roadster to go country-hopping in. Phil has carried out a full restoration of the car over the last 5 years to a lovely standard.

Unfortunately, Phil's wife has recently passed away, and he can no longer enjoy the car as he once hoped. He is now working on his next project car to keep himself busy, and hopes to find this car a new owner, someone who can enjoy the car. He will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

A very attractive Pininfarina styled body, with chrome trim accentuating the good looks.

Wheels and Tyres

The car currently sits on 4 period-correct wire wheels, all appearing in excellent condition with no wear to note. They are recent additions and have only covered ~500 miles, hence the condition.

The wheels are wrapped in Uniroyal Rallye 440 tyres, which has a great amount of tread all around and appears in excellent condition.

Phil is also providing 4x additional steel wheels with the car, which can be seen in the exterior photos. They have very recently been refurbished and finished in Old English White to match the body, fitted with brand new Good Year M+S Ultra Grip, ideal for winter conditions.

Bodywork

The panel gaps look good on this MGB, with the shut lines for doors etc all looking great for a 70s classic.

On our visit, we didn't notice any corrosion to the exterior of the car. We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

The car was subject to a full respray during the restoration over the previous 5 years. The finish of the paintwork is to a high standard, even in colour and finish across every panel with a deep lustre throughout.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The chrome trim along the sides of the car appears in good condition and at the back the slightest signs of pitting begin to show.

The glass looks great, with no signs of cracks, chips or discolouration noted, the window rubbers look good too. The hardtop is presented in good condition.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour of this MGB Roadster.

Interior

An interior to turn heads, finished in red leather with MG's classic dials and switchgear.

Seats and Carpets

The seats, door cards, and carpets were subject to a refurb over Phil's ownership and restoration. The seats appear in very good condition throughout, with no wear to note. The multiple layers of carpets, topped with rubber mats, are fresh items and appear in great condition with no signs of damp.

The boot is the same, all fully carpeted, take a look through the photo gallery to see the detail.

Dashboard

The dashboard is finished in a lovely wooden veneer, period correct. The top of the facia presents in good condition too.

The dials, switch and controls are well presented, with the instruments all said to be functional. The car has been fitted with modern Pioneer Stereo system with door-mounted speakers.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with an appealing and attractive metal with wood rim steering wheel and MG gear shifter, both items appear in good condition. Our only comment would be the MG badge not being central when the wheels are pointing straight forward.

All interior item can be seen in more detail in out interior media pack.

Mechanics

Treated to a full mechanical restoration, and Revotec cooling system to keep up with modern traffic.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine has been subject to a complete check over during the restoration, with any work required having been done. We report the engine bay being very tidy and clean.

We captured a cold start video in which the car started the first time with no issues, and came up to temperature, ticking over nicely.

Take a look at the car on the road too in the mechanical video.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension in the MGB was much softer than its predecessor, with independent front suspension.

Phil informs us the car drives just as it should and stops on demand, the brakes recently being attended to.

The Drive

Phil loves to get the car out for a drive, and he mentions he won't drive it in the rain, or anywhere too muddy to spoil the hard work he's put in over the restoration. Phil mentions the car is a great conversation starter, and always gets stopped by admirers wherever he parks the car up.

Electrics and Other

Fitted with various electrical features for entertainment and security. All the electrical work has been carried out by professionals. A red engine start button and Pioneer head unit is the main feature on the central console.

Phil reports all the electrics are working on the car to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

A very attractive, recently restored example of one of the most popular and accessible classics today - enjoy troublefree motoring in this iconic UK RHD MGB Roadster.

Owned and restored by Phil over the past 5 years, the finish of the restoration is to a lovely standard. Hoping to enjoy the car over his retirement, Phil has actually decided to part with this car which is ready for many grand adventures. Please take a look at the photos of the paperwork section to see the money spent on parts, maintenance, and MOTs.

Some of the major work carried out by Phil: new diff and half shafts, conversion to 12v battery, new master cylinder clutch, slave cylinders clutch and brake, new back shocks, re-chromed over-riders, complete interior, bare metal respray, new window screen, and door rubbers, chrome air filters, push-button starter, chrome sill covers, new hood, water hoses, window winders, heating controls, temperature oil gauge, choke control, number plate lights, seat belts, front poly bushes, revotec cooling system.

4x steel wheels (body-coloured with new Good year Mud and Snow tyres) are included within the sale, along with various over spare parts, the hardtop roof, and a security steering wheel clamp. Phil will be more than happy to answer any questions you might have in the comment section below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

Hi Phil. Lovely car. I’m in the bidding for it. Just a quick question: could you say where the bolt on wire wheels came from and roughly what price? It’s just that I own another classic with mini lites and I’d like to change yo these.

Many thanks

Nigel

Can I ask if you had the work done to repair the corrosion advisories highlighted in the 2016 and 2017 MOTs and what this work involves? Thanks very much. Daniel
