Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Quintessentially British, the MGB offers honest charm, dashing looks, and mechanical simplicity, all which made it a huge success.

The MGB has always been known for its supple ride, road-holding and sporting nature. Over the years, it has become something of a stalwart when it comes to classics, parts and advice for these cars are so plentiful it’s hardly surprising that the ‘B’ maintains its status as the UK’s most popular classic sports car.

A B-series engine produced 98BHP at 5400RPM, a big step up from the original. With an estimated 23,000 still on UK roads, they may not be particularly exclusive, but the Pininfarina-styled cars still provide enthusiasts with an authentic classic car experience.

This rare 'pull handle' model was originally produced for export to the states, it was imported back to the UK in 1989 where it was professionally converted to RHD and has received careful ownership since. David has enjoyed 3 years of tinkering and driving this elegant MGB around Leominster.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

David is a connoisseur of classics, around 3 years ago he was in the market for a restored MGB.

David loves classics and has carried out quite a few full bare metal restorations in his time. Due to some ill health, he was looking for something already finished, this time to tinker with and enjoy at the weekends. That's when he came across this rare 'pull handle' MG MGB roadster. This car had originally been exported to California in 1964 and then imported to the UK in 1989 where it was professionally switched to RHD and restored to a very high standard, finished in an elegant glossy black.

David really enjoys driving the car at the weekends, but needs something to keep him busy during his retirement, with this car now no longer requiring any tinkering, he's looking to change it for another classic. He'll be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

An early car with chrome trim and wire wheels never fails to provoke smiles and turn heads wherever you travel.

Wheels and Tyres

The car was originally fitted wire wheels from factory and these have been polished to a high standard and have well cared for spinners, the wheels look in excellent condition with no major wear to note.

David also fitted new tyres when taking ownership of the car 3 years ago, with Hifly HF201, they appear to have a good amount of tread left. Take a look at the photos and videos to really appreciate the wheels on this car.

Bodywork

The panel work across the whole car looks excellent, with a good straight even fit with no signs of damage to note. All doors and wings fit well with equal panel gaps, the doors hang well with no issues with opening or closing. David reports the car is fitted with an aluminium bonnet, which was only installed on early examples.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Originally the car was finished in Old English White, however during the restoration, the car was resprayed in an elegant glossy black. This looked great on our visit, the paint appears even in coverage and colour across the whole car. The car is ready to be polished and detailed to an even higher standard which would really elevate the deep lustre the paint has to offer.

Again, the images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good condition, with no damage observed on the windscreen and side glass panels. The rear screen is in good condition with no cracks or wear to note. The chrome work throughout the car is in very good condition along with the door and glass rubber is in good condition.

The car also comes with a tonneau cover and hood which also present in great condition.

Interior

A charming reupholstered classic interior with Smith dials, gauges, and timeless MGB good looks.

Seats and Carpets

The seats look in great condition and have been reupholstered in black leather with white piping. There are also multiple layers of mats to protect the bottom carpets. All are clean and looked great on our visit along with the door cars and convertible headlining.

Take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the condition of seats, door cards, and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

A highly original dashboard can be found within the MGB Roadster, it's in line with its age and mileage and has really been given the attention it deserves throughout the restoration.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Great to see the classic MG steering wheel fitted in this example, with the wheel and gearstick looking in great condition. If we we're being really picky, we noticed some very minor cracking beginning to show around the steering wheel in line with the age and mileage of the car.

Mechanics

The MG MGB is the classic to go for if you're hunting for trouble-free motoring, handling, it's a classic Sunday drive car.

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with an 1,800cc 4-pot, it offered 98BHP and a 0-60 time of 10.9s. We captured a mechanical video of the car which shows the engine bay in a clean, solid state, along with the underside of the car. In this video, you'll be able to see the car starting from cold without any fuss and without any unwanted sounds.

David has fitted a stainless steel exhaust on this classic, which not only sounds great but really adds to the aesthetics of the car.

Take a look at the detailed mechanical video to view the car out on the open road too.

Suspension and Brakes

David confirms both the suspension and brakes are working as you would expect, both fully operational. He has always attended to both components whenever they've required work over his ownership, and given proper attention throughout the extensive restoration.

The Drive

David loves the early MGBs and especially how they drive. He mentions always getting stopped by admirers whenever he takes it out, and reports the MGB is a great drivers car thanks to its responsive steering and feisty 4-pot under the aluminium hood.

Electrics and Other

David reports all the electrics are working on the car to his knowledge. Take a look at the extensive media pack for a detailed tour of this classic and desirable MGB.

History and Paperwork

An excellent example of one of the most loved and affordable cars on the classic scene, it's definitely one of the best MBG's we've had on auction.

The car was exported to the states in 1964 and eventually made its way back to the UK 25 years later in 1989. The car started its life in 'Old English White' a classic choice, however during teh restoration is has been changed to an elegant black finish. The car comes with the British motor industry heritage trust certificate, matching numbers and fresh MOT.

Factory fitted equipment; overdrive, wire wheels, heater, black tonneau cover, ashtray, miles-per-hour speedometer, pack-away hood.

Please take a look at the photos of the paperwork section to see the money spent on parts, maintenance, and MOTs. David will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.
