Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

Quicker and better to drive than the MK2, the S-Type is also a bit of bargain in comparison!

Best viewed as a grown-up MK2, the S-Type stands up on its own merits, utilising an upgraded and sophisticated rear suspension layout in a bigger roomier body with interior upgrades and greater comfort. With huge aftermarket know-how and part availability, the S-Type could be considered the thinking-mans alternative to the now-pricy MK2. It retains its sibling's talents without sacrificing performance or ride.

This preferred 3.8-litre model with an automatic transmission has been properly sorted and has been subject to a renovation. Much of its structure, exterior and interior finished to a high standard. Finished in deep rich red, this previously solid project car has been transformed into a genuine head-turner that still has the ability to be hustled at cruising speed in complete comfort and relative quiet.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Arben the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

As a collector of classic cars, the Jaguar's reputation was impossible to resist.

One of several classics taken by the owner, the car was subject to a recent restoration and is being sold to allow for further projects.

Lured by the smooth running and lavish interior of the Jaguar the owner felt it was worth investing in restoring the car, as it combines the sporty yet luxurious attributes of a Jaguar perfectly. Arben will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The standard of finish has been completed to a high level, it now has its grace back.

Wheels and Tyres

Classic steel wheels with chrome hub caps, a classy look for this saloon. The Marshall tyres are all in good condition with good tread, all are over 20 years old however.

The hub caps present in good condition across all four wheels, the chrome finish and badges looking good, there are some scuffs to the outer rims of the steel wheels. View the picture gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

The bodywork and chassis have been subject to restoration, and as a result, the structure and external presentation is very positive. The front cross member, longerons, jacking points, floor pan, suspension mounts and boot floor are all solid.

The exterior panel fit is good, with no notable issues with blemishes, dents or corrosion damage. The door bottoms, sills and wings all look good. All of the doors open and close well. View the detailed video review to see the condition up close.

Paint

The car has seen a new hue of paint, replacing the original blue finish with a lush deep red.

The quality of the finish is excellent, with an even lustre throughout. There are a handful of light scuffs in places but have not penetrated through the paint. Take a look at the photo gallery to see the detail.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all in good condition, with no significant cracks or scratches. The off-side rear door quarter light is a little loose when the door closes.

The chrome work is good throughout, with the front end looking particularly regal. Some items such as the door handles show the inevitable signs of pitting but are still presentable. The rear bumper would benefit from a refurb.

Interior

The leather has been replaced, yet the cabin retains many original interior features.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats have been completely refurbished, along with the door cards, parcel shelf and the centre console. They are free of any damage. The carpets (both in the cabin and boot) are complete and show a little wear but most importantly were dry. The headlining is in good condition with no damage.

Watch the interior review video to see the condition up close.

Dashboard

The veneer finish is good, with some age-related wear but all the better for it. There are no major cracks or damage, with the controls and switches all looking good.

All are said to be functional. The dials display minor signs of age, again in keeping with the ambience of the dashboard presentation.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and column gear selector are good with no particular issues in regards to their condition.

Mechanics

The cars ability to glide gracefully across the highways is still its party trick, the 3.8L straight six the most popular engine.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine starts up well, with no notable issues in regards to its running. It idles well and there were no suggestions of rattles or rumbling. The engine was truly cold, but as the car warmed up the exhaust condensation gradually cleared and no issues were noted in terms of the engine temperature.

The gear selector engages into forward and reverse gear with no trouble or slippage. It's likely that the engine has seen some level of attention as part of the restoration, with the ancillaries and hoses all looking clean. The radiator, electrical components and exhaust look good.

Suspension and Brakes

The physical condition of the running gear is positive, with no issues noted in terms of their presentation so it would safe to assume that they have seen a level of volume of renovation. The suspension and braking components operate without any signicant flaws.

The Drive

The car glides effortlessly at low speeds, with no issues noted from the ride. Due to insurance restrictions, a full test drive could not be conducted, but there is no reason to suggest that the car doesn't drive well at higher speeds. It had recently seen a journey from Surrey to its current location, and the owner reported that it cruised beautifully at a constant 50MPH.

Electrics and Other

A brief electrical test (see the interior video) was conducted, in which the wipers, lights and indicators were shown to be working.

As to be expected for a car that has seen a thorough restoration, components, such as the glass and door rubbers are in good condition and were noted to be effective.

History and Paperwork

Bought as a project, the car has been beautifully transformed with a recent restoration.

Not much is known about the car's provenance, but it is known that it was sold by an auction house in 2016 as a sound restoration project. It is believed that it had been unused since 2007 and has covered not much more than 200 miles over that period, but as the images and videos testify, it has seen an extensive interior and exterior refit with evidence that the gearbox and engine have seen attention.

In addition, the previous owner applied for the cars production record trace certificate, which aligns the car as a UK spec model having originally been sold by Henlys in Weybridge, Surrey.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
