Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

A stylish and well equipped fuel-injected Golf, a cracking 80s hatchback cabriolet.

In '76 Karmann presented Volkswagen with a convertible variant of the Golf, which featured a simple folding roof and later a roll bar introduced for safety purposes. Over the Golf's production, the body remained unchanged despite a wide variety of trim levels being introduced.

The classic MK1 Golf is a personal favourite of the vendor, with the 80s sharp styling. This GTi cabriolet has been recently bought up to the condition you see it in today, come with desirable body coloured bumpers, arches and side skirts, and a smart finished interior given the age and mileage of the car. If you're in the market for a Mk1 Golf GTi in a stunning blue, this is well worth a look.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Amjad the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

Body-coloured bumpers combined with the wider arches and additional trim really set this the GTi cabriolet apart.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 14-inch VW sports wheels, they have recently been treated to a refurbishment. Now presenting in excellent condition on this Convertible GTi.

The tyres have a good amount of tread remaining - the front and nearside rear are wrapped in Egerutti DS612, the rear offside is wrapped in Hankook Optimo K406.

We have captured an overview of wheels and tyres in the detailed photos and videos.

Bodywork

The bodywork is presented to a high standard across the car, with all the panel gaps aligning as they should, especially for the age and mileage of the car. It's clear the car has been owned by enthusiasts throughout its life, and we believe any areas of concern would have been attended to during the respray. A coating of underseal has also been applied for extra protection.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

The car has clearly undergone a professional respray with the paint being highly reflective and lustrous in finish. The colour is even in hue and coverage throughout too.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks good, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit. The window seals look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car. On the convertible hood, we did notice a very small repair under the rear window.

Take a look at the images and photos for a view of the convertible hood.

Interior

The MK1 was engineered to survive the test of time, with the driver's comfort in mind.

Seats and Carpets

Grey cloth seats are fitted within the GTi, with the supportive bolsters they hold you tight in the corners, but offer a comfortable seating position for long drives.

The interior appears in great condition - we did notice a slight repair to the driver's seat bolster, it's been neatly done. There is some slight cracking along the top of the driver's door card too worth noting. The carpets, and headlining all present in great condition with no issues worth noting.

Please take a look at the extensive media for a detailed view of the cabin.

Dashboard

The dashboard appears in good condition, in line with the age and mileage of the car. With no warning lights displayed, and the odometer is showing a reading of ~165,167 miles. The dash has a quality black-plastic finish, which is in good condition.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed shots.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and five-speed gear selector present in good condition, and are consistent with the overall presentation of the cabin.

Mechanics

The 1.8L four-cylinder fuel injected engine ensured the little Golf was a spritely little runner.

Engine and Gearbox

These later MK1's had enlarged 1.8L engines mated to five-speed gearboxes giving them a little more power to play with - 112BHP, which helped you reach 60MPH in under 8 seconds.

Take a look to see 'On the Road' footage and hear the 1.8L jump into life. Amjad reports that the car goes through the gears as it should. Please take a look at the video and photographs of the tidy engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

Amjad reports a very enjoyable and comfortable ride in the car, with suspension providing support where it should and prompt stopping power from the brakes.

The Drive

A very enjoyable drive is delivered in the this Golf, with the fun wind through hair experience offered and endless thrills when you squeeze all the power the fuel-injected 1.8L has to offer.

Electrics and Other

All of the standard electrical fittings are said to be fully functional. The car is fitted with a third party immobiliser for extra security.

Please take a look at the images and videos for a detailed tour of this car's exterior and interior.

History and Paperwork

GTI power in an oh so period cabriolet style, this is a smart and well priced RHD example coming to market.

This car is coming out of 5 months of ownership, Amjad loves collecting classics, renovating them, and passing them on. Take a look through the history and paperwork to see the great amount of history this car comes with, having lived part of its life in France.

Amjad will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.
