Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

Last of the old school TR Triumphs, the TR6 was a worthy send-off with its sharp chisel-chinned exterior and fuel injected engines.

Sports car design in the late 1960’s was still very much of the curved design, as opposed to the more modern look of the TR6 in 1968, with it’s chiselled looks and sharp lines restyled by the German company Karmann. The Triumph already had a good base with the last TR, favouring the separate chassis to body design. The car had independent rear suspension, front anti-roll bar, rack and pinion steering and front disc brakes, and to top it off, it was fitted with the wonderful 2.5 litre straight-six engine.

This particular 1972 Triumph TR6 finished in black with red interior makes for an attractive and welcome colourway to the typical reverse. It is presented in solid original condition, appearing not to have had a full restoration at any point, but well maintained and cared for over its life.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Keith the seller, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

My friend has owned the TR6 for just under 12 months, and it’s been fantastic for the summer months but it’s now time to let someone else enjoy it.

Keith is a classic car enthusiast, and is helping his friend Richard with the sale of this TR6. The car covered ~1300 miles since the last MOT.

That's the thing with classic cars, you don’t have to own them forever and a day to enjoy them. A simple few months of ownership with a reliable classic is often all that is needed to get your latest fix, and to tick off the ‘cars wanted to own’ list, which is exactly what Richard has done. With Keith having more knowledge on classics, he'll be on point and will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

Taking the late 60’s styling to a new level, Karmann was responsible for the sharp looks of the TR6.

Wheels and Tyres

We love the look of the steel wheels rather than the wire examples you see on many, they give the TR6 a more sports focused look, and are a perfect match for this black example.

The original steel wheels have been refinished in silver and are in good condition, with just a couple of age related marks to be seen. The centre caps look to be original and are in a tidy presentable condition. The tyres are matching and have a good amount of tread remaining for the new keeper.

Bodywork

It would be difficult to disagree with anyone who thought that the TR6 is a wonderful looking car. Restyled by Karmann, the chiselled sharp looks were a new design for vehicles in the late 60’s.

Looking around the TR6, it is in lovely condition. It has had some areas re-painted in the past, but never a full restoration. The panels look to align as they should, with a nice even gap around the doors, bonnet and boot. The bodywork is in great shape, and we only noticed a small hairpin dent on the boot of the car.

A new Mohair roof was purchased and fitted in 2015, which is in good order, and sts nice and tight. The 3 plastic windows are also in good condition with no excessive creasing or cloudiness to the finish. Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at the exterior.

Paint

As we mentioned, the car is believed never to have had a full extensive restoration, so there are a few marks and chips dotted about the paintwork. The paint finish has a nice shine to it, there are some swirl marks, which as you know is pretty inevitable with a solid black car. We think these could certainly be reduced or removed with a full paint detail.

Please take the time to fully assess the condition of the exterior. The images taken are from various angles and reflections to make your assessment on the condition and quality.

Glass and Trim

The windows all appear to be in good order, with no noticeable scratches, other than a couple of light age related marks. The front windscreen rubber was replaced in 2006, and so is still in good condition.

The lights are in good order to the front and rear, along with the chrome surrounds. The chrome bumpers and door mirrors also look to be in very nice condition with a bright finish.

Interior

A red leather affair with classic wooden veneer, it's a good choice to contrast the black exterior on this TR6.

Seats and Carpets

The interior all looks to be good used condition, with no signs of excessive wear, other than some creasing to the leather seats as you'd expect. There is a little wear to the piping of the driver's seat and a small scuff towards the centre section worth noting. The door cards match the seats and are in good condition with no obvious signs of any damage.

The carpets have been well looked after and have possibly had mats fitted to protect them in the past, as they are in very good condition. There is no heavy wear to the usual place on the driver's heel pad. The boot is finished in black, with no carpet, and the spare wheel is present with a new tyre fitted.

Please see the interior gallery section for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is finished in a red leather top to match the seats, with a wooden fascia. The leather section looks to be in good order. The wooden fascia is generally good with just a slight amount of lacquer starting to split in places. This could easily be sanded back and re-varnished for a nice Sunday project.

The instruments look to be in nice condition and are working as they should. The odometer has a reading of 11,219 miles. Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic wood rim, three spoke steering wheel has been fitted, which is in good condition. There is a leather bound steering wheel included, should you wish to change it for greater grip when driving.

The gear knob is a polished ball with no shift pattern. The shaft has some paint missing and the leather gaiter is in good condition.

Mechanics

A 2.5 litre fuel injected straight-six makes 150BHP and gives you a respectable 0-60 mph in 8.2 seconds.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.5 litre straight-six fuel injected engine has been well cared for over the years by it’s previous keepers, as the history file shows. The engine bay itself looks to be in original condition with no areas for concern. As you can see in our "Mechanical Review" video, the car starts from cold with ease and no hesitation. This could be down to the recent overhaul of the injectors, which ensures that the TR6 is running as it should. The car has also recently been fitted with a stainless steel exhaust which sounds fantastic, again you will hear it in our video.

Coupled to a 4-speed plus overdrive, Keith reports that the change is smooth and the overdrive is working as it should, with no untoward noises coming from the transmission.

Suspension and Brakes

The TR6 looks to sit as it should. Looking under the car, it appears to have had rear shock absorbers not too long ago. There don't seem to be any leaks that we could see, and there is minimal surface rust on the components.

Like the rest of the car, the brakes are well maintained and bring the TR6 to a halt in a straight line, with Keith reporting no juddering through the pedal.

The Drive

As you can see from our Mechanical Review video, the TR6 sounds fantastic out on the road, and sitting in the car as a passenger is a pleasure. The TR6 soaks up the bumps with no crashing through the suspension, and the 2.5 litre pulls strongly through the gears.

Electrics and Other

There is some slight wear to the lettering on some of the switches, but you can tell what they are for, and the indicators were a bit intermittent on our visit along with the radio not working. These are items that should be looked at by a new owner. The gauges for the oil pressure show a healthy reading for the TR6’s power unit when idling or on the move.

History and Paperwork

A nice history file is present with plenty of old MOT certificates showing the car has had little but regular use over its life.

There are a number of invoices from around the early 2000’s showing a number of parts purchased for the TR6. This continues up to around 2015, when the new roof was fitted. A number of previous MOT certificates are with the car, with the earliest one dating to 1994.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
