Introduction

Matt Nolan
Professional Consigner

A tasteful blend of power, handling and gorgeous 60s Pininfarina styling - the MG MGB Roadster really has it all.

The MGB was first introduced to the world in 1962 and produced until 1980, the soft-top sports car formula of the MGB stayed relatively simple throughout. A B-series engine now produced 95BHP at 5400RPM, a big step up from its predecessor. Its good looks, honest charm, and simple mechanics made it hugely successful - it shortly became Britain's best-selling sports car.

There are an estimated 23,000 still on UK roads, they may not be particularly exclusive, but with their distinctive Pininfarina styling, these cars still provide that authentic classic car experience.

This early Mark I model is finished in classic "Signal Red" and has been Stephen hands for the past 4 years, he was in the market for a convertible classic to enjoy on warm summer days around Wales. With summer shows and warm days ahead of us, this is a car ready to be acquired and enjoyed.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Matt after meeting Stephen the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always fancied owning an MGB Roadster - finished in its classic red paintwork, this convertible is a real joy to take out on the weekend.

While on the search for a classic car to enjoy on the weekends, Stephen stumbled upon this example. Knowing how popular the car was he knew there would be no shortage of parts or knowledge online - and after getting behind the wheel quickly realised why the MGB has earned the reputation as a stalwart in the market.

Stephen has carried out some work himself over his 4 years of ownership, he's fitted a new carpet, reconditioned starter motor, new fuel pump, new seals, and fitted brake shoes on the rear of the car.

Due to work commitments, Stephen doesn't have much time to enjoy the car as much as he once did, therefore he brought the car to auction to find a new custodian, someone who will enjoy the car as much as he has. He will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

These early examples are popular among MGB enthusiasts for their Pininfarina styled bodywork and touches like pull handles.

Wheels and Tyres

This MGB is fitted with period-correct wire wheels. The wheels would benefit from a refurb and a good polish to really elevate the car. All the wheels are wrapped in UniRoyal Rallye 680's, dated 2003. They look good all-round, with a usable amount of tread still left on them.

Please take a look at the exterior photos for an extensive view of the wheels.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks good on this MGB. For a car from the '60s all the shut lines are looking good and are in line with the build quality of these MG's.

When getting really close we noticed some very minor bubbling around the bottom of the doors, and some slight signs of patina. We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

We believe the car is finished in a "Signal Red", a classic and iconic choice for the MGB Roadster.

On our visit, we did notice wear to the paint in the form of swirl marks and small marks here and there. The paint appears in line with the age, but a deep 3-stage polish would really lift out that vibrant red colour.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks good, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit. The window seals look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car. The convertible roof appears in good condition however would benefit from a deep clean.

The chrome bumpers, grille, door, boot handles, and window surrounds all look in good condition with small areas of pitting beginning to show.

Interior

A charming MGB interior with red pipping and Smiths dials, it's the archetypal British classic cabin.

Seats and Carpets

The original seats look good in this Roadster, clean throughout with very few signs of wear, the bolsters show a few creases but overall a lovely example in line with the age and mileage of the car.

Stephen reports fitting new red carpets 3 years ago, the condition of these carpets look great, along with the door cards.

Dashboard

A highly original dashboard can be found within the MGB Roadster, it's in line with its age and mileage and would really benefit from a deep detail and some smartening up in areas.

The car is a usable classic and yet with a little TLC in places would create a fine MGB example. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour of the interior.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Great to see the classic MG steering wheel with MG badging and gear stick too. The Italian-inspired steering wheel, is lined with a wood veneer and presents in good condition for its age. The gear stick tells a similar story.

Mechanics

If you're looking for trouble-free motoring combined with a good measure of performance and handling, the MGB is the classic for you.

Engine and Gearbox

This MGB is powered by a feisty 4 pot, offering ~98BHP and a 0-60 time of 10.9s. Not bad for an everyman classic from the 60s.

Stephen assures us that the engine is running very well and smoothly just as it should. Please view the MG MGB cold start video, where we start the car cold, show around the engine bay, underneath the car, and also an on the road video.

Suspension and Brakes

Stephen informs us the car drives just as it should and stops on demand too, over his ownership he has fitted new rear brake shoes. The suspension in the MGB was much softer than it's predecessor with independent front suspension, better for touring.

The Drive

Stephen quickly found out why these MGB are so popular in the classic market, the drive is unmatched and offers the perfect blend of speed, handling, and power. He mentions the car always draws positive attention whenever he ventures out in it.

The MG MGB leans more toward the grand touring side of sports cars. More space for luggage was offered and softer suspension gives you a beautiful ride.

Electrics and Other

Stephen reports that to his knowledge all of the electrics are functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

History and Paperwork

A very desirable MK1 MGB Roadster with Pininfarina styling finished in Signal Red - this example would be an ideal usable classic for summer or a great base for further renovation.

This car is coming out of ~4 years of ownership with Stephen, he purchased the car while looking for a classic two-seater to enjoy on bright weekends. Over his ownership he's really enjoyed taking the car out and using it on the stunning winding Welsh roads, he's also attended to the car and fitted new carpet, reconditioned starter motor, new fuel pump, new seals, and fitted brake shoes on the rear of the car.

Stephen will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.
