Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

If you're looking for a charming classic, with practicality and simple mechanics, the Triumph Herald is the car for you.

The 13/60 was the final update to the original concept. Production started at the end of 1967, until early 1971, and the herald was fitted with the same 1296cc engine as the Triumph 1300 FWD and Mk3 Spitfire - offering the driver a 25% increase in power from the previous version. Some of the changes were as follows; the front end was revised with styling based on the Vitesse bonnet with single 7" headlamps, 9-gallon fuel tanks and features like steering lock were also installed on these later examples.

This example is coming to market from 32 years ownership, it's clearly been cherished and has had place as pride and joy. Finished in "Saffron Yellow", it will certainly turn heads wherever you travel in it. The car has benefited from being stored in a dry garage through the current long ownership, so given it isn't a recently restored car, it presents in good condition. The engine pulled well on our shoot, and so it's a car that's ready to be used and improved over time.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Graham the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always had a love of everything Triumph, motorbikes and cars and in particularly wanted a convertible to drive on sunny days.

Graham thoroughly enjoyed traveling in his brother's classic cars, and decided to purchase one of his own for summer back in 1990. He had always been a Triumph fan, and the Herald was a good choice for him. Known as "Little Miss Sunshine" within his family, he loves taking the car out for trips on a fine summer's day.

He has taken the car to many Triumph meets, and some historical parades, always attracting attention with its bright paintwork. Due to Graham's health, he can't enjoy the car as much as he once did and has decided to part with this Herald, he hopes to find an owner who will get the same enjoyment from owning it as he has over the previous years. Graham will be happy to answer all your questions in the comments below.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

Beautiful 60's styling, for many this is the main appeal of the Triumph Herald.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 13" wheels, which are covered with chrome hub caps with decorative circles, the hubcaps present in good condition, with the slightest signs of pitting in areas.

The wheels are wrapped in Hankook Optimo K715's and appear to have a good amount of tread for the new owner.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Triumph is in usable condition, in-line with the age and mileage of the car. It's a car that Graham has owned for a long time, and any work on it has been completed a long time ago. As a result there's room for improvement, the panel gaps could be improved, and some bubbling is beginning to appear around the bottom of the doors and some leading edges of panels etc.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

The car is finished in an attractive "Saffron Yellow", which certainly stands out on the road. The paint appears in fair condition for the age and mileage of the car. On our visit, we did notice some swirls marks as you'd expect for a car that hasn't been machine polished.

In addition to the finish, there is the odd mark on the car like a touch up on the bonnet, and the nearside sill having some significant marks on the front of the sill. Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks good, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit. The window seals look in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

The convertible roof will need to be repaired/replaced. The frame looks in good condition and goes up and down, but the nearside window has perished as pictured. The interior hasn't been effected by this defect, as the garage where the car is stored is dry. The chrome bumpers, grille, door, boot handles, and window surrounds all look in good condition with small areas of pitting beginning to show.

Interior

A typical British classic car interior, this example has benefited from being stored in a dry garage for the past ~25 years.

Seats and Carpets

The original black vinyl seats look good in this Herald convertible, clean throughout with very few signs of wear.

The carpets look good, along with the door cards. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour of the interior.

Dashboard

The later Herald benefited from an updated dashboard, one that can be found in this original example. The condition is in line with its age and mileage and would benefit from a deep detail in areas. Graham reports all the dials, controls and switches work well to his knowledge.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

We like to see the original Triumph steering wheel and gear stick too. The sporty steering wheel, is wrapped in black leather and presents in good condition for its age, the gear stick tells a similar story.

Mechanics

Great availability to parts and ease of mechanical upkeep make this an ideal starter classic, or just plain motoring fun.

Engine and Gearbox

The 13/60 offered ~61BHP in this later example, with accurate steering and stress-free gear changes for an enjoyable and reliable drive around the city.

We captured a cold start video that shows the car starting without fuss the first time. The car hadn't been out on the road for some 3 years by Grahams estimation, and drove very pleasantly. Please take a look at the detailed media pack to see a closer view of the engine bay and underneath the car.

Suspension and Brakes

Graham reports having always attending to the mechanics whenever the car required new parts, however being a reliable runner the car asks for very little.

Graham mentions the brakes offer prompt stopping power, and the car provides a very comfortable journeys wherever he decides to travel.

The Drive

One of the best classics you can own and drive for its simple charm, practicality, and DIY simplicity.

Being a later example, the car is highly equipped for a '70s classic, finished in "Saffron Yellow" you'll turn many heads and bring many smiles to people's faces wherever you drive. Graham reports the car has always been a thrill to drive, especially when you get the roof down.

Electrics and Other

Graham reports that to his knowledge all of the electrics are functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from long term ownership, and just 3 former keepers before, this Herald convertible is the ideal usable classic for a summer of use and renovation in the future.

This car is coming out of 32 long years of ownership with Graham, who has really loved this car since he took over ownership in 1990. He reports the car is MOT exempt, however had one carried out in 2019 for good measure, and hasn't been driven much since. Take a look at the media to see all the history included within the sale of the car.

Graham will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.
