Introduction

Alan Stuart
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

4.0L Straight Six, DB7 suspension upgrade, fantastic colourway and ~22 years of diligent, enthusiast ownership – this is a great, late model, cool cat.

Development for the XJS started in the late 60’s and, when it became available in 1975, a 21-year production run began that made it Jaguars longest running model. As the successor to the E-type the XJ-S had a tough act to follow but Jaguar didn’t play safe, using aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer to pen the initial design. One of the first designers to apply aerodynamic principles to mainstream production cars, Sayer died tragically in 1970 and the design mantle was picked up by Jaguars in house team. Initially a V12 the XJ-S was later offered in straight six form with 3.6 and 4.0 litre displacement. Following extensive improvements and a facelift in 1991, after Fords acquisition of Jaguar, the car became known simply as the XJS. This last model is the best regarded of the range and production continued for a further five years.

This car is a very late model XJS Celebration and comes to auction in stunning "Ice Blue Metallic" over a grey leather interior. It has been with the current owner for nearly ~22 years having been well cared for and enjoyed. This XJS benefits from the prized DB7 suspension upgrade and has good service and maintenance history.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Simon the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It’s a fantastic car, it looks great, the silky-smooth engine is relaxing while there is plenty of torque and speed there when and if you need it.

Simon has owned this car for almost ~22 years, initially as his daily driver and then to enjoy around the A and B roads of the UK. Simon tells us how he came to own the car; “I was looking for an XJS and test drove a green '90 model, my wife spotted this Ice Blue celebration as we returned to the dealer and said, what about that one? So, we got it!”.

He goes on to tell us “It’s a brilliant grand tourer, I love the long bonnet and enjoying the flowing, smooth drive on sweeping A roads, which is where the car excels – It will be heart-breaking to see it go after 22 years but I have decided to buy a 1930’s open tourer and cannot justify keeping both, so it’s for a new owner to enjoy”. Simon will be happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

Unmistakably Jaguar, superb Grand Tourer styling, with the signature flying buttresses - this XJS looks stunning, elegant and purposeful in cool Ice Blue metallic.

Wheels and Tyres

The Celebration edition of the XJS came with 16-inch daimond cut alloy wheels. These appear in very good condition with no significant kerbing and the centre badging still looks great.

The wheels are shod with 225/55/R16 tyres which look in good condition with plenty of tread remaining. View the image gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

Shut lines appear good, panels do not appear to have any obvious distortion and the doors, boot and bonnet open and close properly. Simon advises that the closing mechanism on the offside door has been replaced which may explain the door lifting slightly on closure. This could benefit from some further attention.

Overall, the car looks great, especially with the body coloured bumpers that the Celebration came with – take a look at the photos and videos to appreciate the bodywork for yourself.

Paint

The "Ice Blue Metallic" paint looks great and suits the car well. The finish is generally consistent and even and still retains a deep shine. There are some areas of minor bubbling and lifting, most notably around the windscreen, scuttle and wheel arch lips. In certain lights a blend line, where previous respray work has been carried out, can be seen between the roof and the offside rear quarter.

Apart from these inevitable age-related flaws the paintwork looks very good. Check out the high-resolution images and Exterior Review video to judge for yourself.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, windows and lenses all appear in very good condition with no cracks or significant scratching. Chromework is good with only minor, age related pitting and badging looks very good.

Interior

Embossed Jaguar headrests, beautiful grey leather and walnut dash all combine to make this a great place to be – a proper grand tourer cabin.

Seats and Carpets

Grey leather seats appear in good condition showing only some wear to the driver’s seat bolster, very typical for a car of this mileage. The Celebration specific, Jaguar embossed headrests look great and the carpets, although a little worn in some places are sound and serviceable.

Dashboard

Instruments are clear and unmarked, looking great set in the signature Burl Walnut dash. The wood and trim are in remarkably good condition and give the interior a comfortable, capable and opulent feel. Check out the interior review video and high-resolution images to appreciate this great cabin.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The walnut and leather steering wheel with Jaguar badged centre section looks in very good condition as does the auto drive selector lever and surround - these are typical of the touches of quality and opulence that set Jaguar apart.

Mechanics

The AJ-16 straight six delivers ~228BHP to the rear wheels through the smooth 4 speed automatic gearbox, paired with the DB7 suspension upgrade this makes for a sporty, responsive and flexible drive.

Engine and Gearbox

The legendary 6-cylinder AJ-16 straight six fitted to these cars offered a top speed in excess of ~140MPH and 0-60 in under 8 seconds. More importantly, this block gained a reputation of being "bullet proof", which helps to explain the miles clocked on this car.

On our cold start this engine started well and quickly settled down to a steady idle. Emissions appeared clear and there were no warning lights on illuminated on the dash. Check out the “On the Road” video to share in our experience of the cold start and our test drive with Simon.

Suspension and Brakes

Simon advises that this car has been fitted with the much-prized DB7 suspension upgrade by marque specialist Clarkes. He tells us this has dramatically improved the cornering and handling.

Jaguar engineered brakes are more than a match for the ~228BHP generated by the 4.0L engine and Simon assures us both suspension and brakes work exactly as they should.

The Drive

On the short test drive, we joined Simon for the car felt sure footed with the upgraded suspension allowing very little roll. Brakes pulled up sharply and cleanly when required with no sense of juddering or pulling to either side.

The drive was quiet, comfortable and planted, the auto box was slick and quiet while the lovely straight six hinted at real potential. There were no untoward knocks, rattles or bangs. Check out the "On The Road" video to get a sense of how this car drives

Electrics and Other

Electrics on these cars are relatively uncomplicated. All switches, dials and gauges look in great condition. Simon advises us the that the air conditioning, electric aerial and immobiliser are not working at the moment.

History and Paperwork

In stunning Ice Blue with DB7 suspension upgrade and good history, this late XJS is a great example of these increasingly sought-after classics – an opportunity not to be missed.

A superb grand tourer. Elegant, comfortable, sure footed and powerful. This XJS come with original service book and numerous receipts for works that have been carried out as and when required demonstrating careful and diligent ownership. There is also a lovely shot of OXI in the London to Brighton run, previous MOT certificates and some Tax Discs.

The car will be sold with the current registration OXI 554.
