The ultimate 90s cruiser, first introduced to the world in 1989 with production running until 2001, a step-change in the design from the R107, the R129 firmly holds its own place, now considered a modern classic.

This SL300 is coming to market from 23 years of ownership, used as a weekend cruiser. This SL spends its winters garaged, and presents as a used and honest example, it could be a good entry in to SL ownership this summer.

I've always been a big fan of the R129 Mercedes, amazing to think how long I've had this.

Coming out of 23 years of ownership with Younis, he has thoroughly enjoyed using the car as his weekend cruiser during the summer months.

Due to lack of use and spending more time working abroad, Younis has decided it'd be best to sell the car, he is now looking for a like-minded R129 enthusiast to take over ownership. He will be happy to answer any of your questions about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

Almost 30 years old, a design which has aged so well, these cars have a real presence on the road.

Wheels and Tyres

Equipped with Lorinser 17 inch alloys, they present in good, original condition overall. There are some minor areas of curb marks on close inspection.

The wheels are shod with Accelera Alpha tyres and a Cooper Zeon CS8 which all appear to have good levels of tread remaining. View the photo gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

We love the 90s shape the R129 offers. All the bodywork looks in good condition on this particular example, most of the panel gaps look good but we did notice the rear offside bumper showing a slightly larger gap.

We did notice some light areas of age to the bonnet, and some corrosion in typical areas close to some wheel arches. We also noticed some cracking to the lower front bumper.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a Signal Red (568U) with a smart "Pebble" leather interior. Each panel presents a deep lustre, some panels have been resprayed in the past as pointed out in the media pack and so do show more orange peel that you'd get from factory, and the colour on some panels can show difference in some light too.

The paint has some small patches of lacquer peel which would benefit from being addressed, these have been pictured, and with the age there is the odd nick to leading edges of panels/doors.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks to be in good condition all around, including the hardtop. The grill trim and rubber seals look good too, in line with the rest of the car.

Younis was not able to remove the hard top due to the weight, and so we cannot comment on the condition of the soft top.

Interior

Oozing in first-class 90s luxury - finished in Pebble leather.

Seats and Carpets

Equipped with luxurious electric adjustable memory seats, they are ideal for long journeys and trips around the continent. The "Pebble" (275A) leather seats are in good used condition in the front, with just some minor wear and creasing in the leather that can come with age.

Younis reports the electric seats are currently not adjustable, due to a few electrical gremlins. The carpets, door cards and headlining all appear in good condition - in line with the condition of the rest of the interior.

Dashboard

As with the rest of the interior, a nice example. A clean and smart dash and instrument cluster, all the numbers are clean, clear and legible.

The speedometer showed ~83,728 although this is not believed to be functioning properly, take a look at the history and paperwork media pack for a detailed view of the mileage over the years.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic and attractive 4-spoke Mercedes-Benz steering wheel finished in black leather along with the gear selector. Both items appear original and in good condition with no major signs of wear.

Mechanics

Offering a beautiful blend of economy and performance, the SL300 is a solid performer.

Engine and Gearbox

Equipped with an M103 3.0 L 12-valve SOHC Inline-6 which will produce ~188BHP at 5,700rpm. Yonuis mentions it’s a very powerful yet economical engine of choice and reports both the M103 and gearbox are smooth in operation.

Suspension and Brakes

The front suspension in this SL300 has independent damper struts whereas the rear suspension has an independent 5-arm multi-link. Younis assures us of a very smooth ride.

The brakes on this car also feature 2-circuit hydraulic power-assisted wheel discs with ABS, and drilled discs. It's reported to perform with plenty of stopping power when required.

The Drive

Younis mentioned to us the car drives very well and is quiet, comfortable, and well mannered out on the open roads.

The SL300 offers the perfect combination of economy and power from this inline-6 3L.

Electrics and Other

Younis reports that the electrics could do with some attention, to fix a few small gremlins, common in cars of this age. The offside fog light is currently not working, and as mentioned a few items inside the cabin too detailed in the Interior section.

A SL300 offering practicality, efficiency yet can still pack a punch in performance. Coming out of 23 years of ownership, Younis has really enjoyed cruising in this roadster. The car wants some electrical attention and cosmetic TLC to bring it back to it former glory, but still holds a presence on the road.
