Introduction

Josh Sharples
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

The MGB needs little introduction – a compliant, entertaining, elegant sports car that behaves impeccably and still looks fantastic.

With an 18-year production run resulting in over half a million cars the MGB was Britain’s best-selling sports car by some margin. As popular today as they have ever been the ‘B’ is nothing if not versatile. Still holding their own in classic rallying and racing as well as providing huge fun on the country lanes of the UK. An MGB makes classic driving everything it should be.

Countless specialists provide spares and support to the extent that you can build one from scratch! For an inexpensive, elegant and enjoyable sports classic Bs are difficult to beat. The ubiquitous B series engine drives the rear wheels through a four-speed manual box with overdrive on 3rd and 4th gears. The drive is engaging, communicative and guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

This MGB is a 1977 model presented in black with a tan hood over a black interior. It’s been converted to the more desirable chrome bumper specification and has comes with the obligatory wire wheels and knock off spinners. It’s a car that needs a little TLC for sure but it’s ready to go – perfect to enjoy the summer and improve over time. With superb club support this is a classic that is easy to love and immense fun to own. Just made for the British summertime.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Josh after meeting Kevin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love the feeling of driving the car, the earthy engine sounds, and the fact that people see an MGB and smile.

Kevin has owned this MG for 4 years and he loves it, he tells us “It feels like you are flying a First World War propeller plane! You need to really drive it, changing gears and pulling the wheel. In a way you just don’t get with a modern car”.

He goes on to say “My Uncle was a great fan of MG’s he had a Midget, an MGB and an MGBGT, they remind me of him. We lost him when he was young, so I have a huge sentimental attachment to these cars”.

With a house move and project on the cards, and another baby on the way, the car is coming to market on auction with us. Kevin will be happy to answer any questions about his MGB in the comments section below.

Exterior

The unmistakable, elegant and quintessentially British lines can be recognised anywhere - the MGB set a new standard for the accessible sports car in 1962.

Wheels and Tyres

The painted wire wheels with knock off hubs are in good condition and look perfect for this car, completing the exterior conversion to chrome bumper specification. The tyres look good with a good amount of tread remaining.

View the image and video footage to see the wheels in more detail.

Bodywork

The car appears to stand straight and true for an MG of this era. The tan hood looks in very good condition and we understand from Kevin that it works properly and there are no leaks.

The bodywork does require a bit of attention with some corrosion along the rear seams and wing edges which is very typical for these cars. There is also some bubbling on the bonnet and headlight surrounds. Overall, the bodywork would benefit from some TLC so do take a look at the photos and images to judge for yourself.

Paint

Black is a slightly less common colour choice for the MGB although they do look fantastic in this finish particularly with chrome bumpers.

The paint still retains much of its depth although there are some scratches and lifting where surface corrosion has occurred, and some scratches on the nearside door. The finish does need a bit of work in some areas and we’ve done our best to capture this in the videos and high-resolution images.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, side windows, mirrors and light lenses all look good with no significant scratches or marks. Chrome and badging generally look good with only minor signs of age-related wear.

The chrome on the lower part of the front bumper is showing some light, surface corrosion and the nearside door handle needs tightening.

Interior

Some say it's like sitting in a WW2 fighter, the interior is beautifully laid out, comfortable and purposeful - even after 45 years this “cockpit” remains a fantastic place to be.

Seats and Carpets

Black seats and headrests are in good condition with no rips or tears that we could see. There’s plenty of room and, this being a later model ‘B’ the cabin has a slightly more modern feel to it.

The interior is generally good although there are some patches of wear here and there – exactly what you would expect from an unrestored example. Take a look at the interior videos and photographs.

Dashboard

The Smiths dials, gauges and switches all appear undamaged. Kevin assures us everything works exactly as it should.

While the dashboard is generally sound there is some surface corrosion on the glove compartment door, on the centre console ashtray and around the tachometer bezel.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The wooden, aftermarket, 3 spoke, Mota Lita steering wheel looks fantastic and is in great condition. Perfectly fitting for this car. The Gear lever with overdrive control, leather gator and black painted bezel all appear sound, just patina that comes with age.

Mechanics

The B series engine is a legend in itself – it’s an uncomplicated, trustworthy, spirited unit that offers responsive, communicative driving

Engine and Gearbox

The ~1,798 engine delivers a factory specified 95bhp to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive on 3rd and top. The power delivery to the rear wheels is progressive and consistent making the driving experience highly rewarding. You will see from the Cold Start video that it starts well, and emissions are clear. The bonnet and boot stays require attention.

Suspension and Brakes

The MGB is equipped with discs on the front and drums on the rear the brakes. This is more than sufficient for a car of this design and era. On the road the car appears to pull up cleanly and evenly with no judder.

The Drive

Sounds great, pulls well, responds positively and must be driven which is all part of the charm. Gear changes are precise, handling seems great, and the car feels compliant and planted. Check out the “On the Road” video to share in the brief test drive we took with Kevin

Electrics and Other

Electrics are simple and uncomplicated. Dials, switches and lights appear in good condition and Kevin assures us everything works as it should.

History and Paperwork

It’s pretty, it’s a joy to drive, it’s affordable and it’s an unforgettable part of British motoring history – everyone should own an MGB at least once.

This is a car with huge potential – OK it needs some tidying here and there but it’s ready to go. Enjoy the summer, making improvements as you go along or just use the car as it is.

With great club support, plenty of spares availability and the love of just about every classic car enthusiast you’ll be in great company - everywhere you go the smiles will follow

The car come with some historic MOT certificates and is, of course MOT and tax exempt.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hello sir,
First off I love you car, I’m new to this bidding online, I’m normally at the place touching and looking, this is very difficult to judge what to bid in no matter how trusted the auction I’m sure you understand hahaha,
So straight to the point what would it cost to buy out right or do I have to go through the auction, I’ll be honest I’m bidding on 2 minis and 3 MGB’s so I’m all in and understand totally if your reluctant to say a rough figure but it’s worth a shot as I’m not able to be hands on in the auction anyway, thanks and best if luck to you your car is the best of the 3 by far.
Cheers and thanks ?????
