Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

A rare and well-sought-after original XJ12, you don't find them like this often!

The Series II XJ received an attractive facelift and was one of the last Jaguar models with direct input from Sir William Lyons before his retirement. Raised bumpers were fitted to meet US crash safety regulations, the interior received a substantial update with simplified heated and A/C units to address any issues the Series I had.

This is one of the few and desirable carburettor examples ever made during the Series 2 production, early in the first year. It's coachwork is finished in British racing green with original green leather - this is '70s luxury motoring at its finest. This example is coming to market from 2 years ownership with a classic car enthusiast. The cars been used the car for a family wedding, and enjoyed on weekends to meets and clubs. With just ~28,000 miles recorded, it's a rare car indeed.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Roy the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've thoroughly enjoyed owning this time-warp XJ12L, it's charming to drive and always gains a lot of attention.

Roy has always appreciated Jaguars and has always fancied an XJ, remembering them from his youth. When this LWB XJ V12 carburettor example came up for sale, he jumped on the opportunity of owning it. It was previously owned by Eagle Racing for a number of years before Roy became the 6th owner. Finished in British racing green, with its original olive leather interior and highly desirable carburettor spec, this is the example to have.

The car has been kept in the original spec, unmodified, and always garage. He'll be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

Green over green - the elegant shape of the long-wheelbase XJ would still look at home outside Downing street today.

Wheels and Tyres

Equipped with 15" steel wheels with Jaguar badged chrome hub caps, all 4 wheels appear in great condition.

The wheels are wrapped in Goodride Radial SP06s all dated 2018 with a good amount of tread left on them for the new owner.

Bodywork

The car stands straight, shut lines look good and doors, bonnet and boot all open and close exactly as they should. There appear to be no obvious dinks or major dents on the panels.

This is a great example and we’ve taken plenty of pictures and videos - do take a look and see how good this car actually is.

Paint

Finished in a classic "British Racing Green" this LWB XJ12 really does look the part paired with the olive leather interior. The paint looks even across all the panels.

When getting really close to the paintwork we noticed some very minor stone chips to the front bumper and bonnet which have been touched up in the past, we did notice some the edges of the boot lid had wear in each corner. Just minor imperfections in line with the age of the car.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves and for you to make your own minds up on the condition.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks great and in line with the low mileage and ownership, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit. The window seals look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

The chrome bumpers, grille, door, handles, dual fuel caps, and window surrounds all look in great condition too.

Interior

The all green leather interior really does look the part in this elegant and luxurious cabin.

Seats and Carpets

The XJ is fitted with olive leather seats. The seats have all held their shape very well over the years as you would expect for the little use and mileage, and careful ownership.

The soft leather continues to the door cards, deep pile carpets with over mats. You can tell this car has been meticulously cared for over its lifetime by a line of enthusiasts. We did notice a few minor marks and darker shades of Olive to the passenger seat and back of the chair, as with the exterior, just minor points we feel.

Please take a look at the extensive media for a detailed view of the cabin.

Dashboard

We haven't noticed any signs of any cracking or damage on the black leather-topped dashboard, in line with the rest of the interior. The instruments are reported to be working as they should with the odometer reading ~28,303.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

In line with the rest of the interior, the steering wheel and automatic gear stick are in great condition, showing very little signs of wear and look in line with the age and mileage of the car.

Mechanics

Just as you would expect of a car of this calibre, great history with John Coombs service stamps.

Engine and Gearbox

Featuring a 5.3L aluminium engine, first seen in the 1971 E-Type, with brakes and tyres both beefed-up to handle the extra power. The Jaguar Series II V12 producing 285BHP had a 0-60 time of 7.8 seconds and a top speed of 147MPH.

The car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth automatic gearbox powering the wheels. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath the XJ, and the smart yet highly complex engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

Roy mentions this XJ upholds its prompt stopping power. Both the suspension and brakes are in full working order with no unusual sounds or vibrations when driving as can be seen in the mechanical video.

The Drive

The V12s offer impressive torque and ultra-smooth cruising capabilities. While sitting in the passenger seat the fans from the A/C were actually louder than the gentle purr from this big cat!

Watch the mechanical video to see the car start from cold and out on a short drive along some country roads.

Electrics and Other

Roy reports that to his knowledge all of the electrics are functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

History and Paperwork

One very attractive and highly desirable low-mileage carburettor-spec XJ12 L,

Roy has been the proud owner of this highly-original low mileage XJ12 L in "British Racing Green" over "Olive" interior for the past ~two years. Please take a look to see all the original paperwork which comes with the car. On file you'll notice service reports from the '70s stamped by John Coombs garage in Guilford which enjoy a special relationship with the Jaguar marque in both racing and road cars.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
