Variable cam timing (VTEC) is what allows the S2000’s 2.0 litre engine to spin up to 9000rpm - creating one of the most exhilarating two-seater sports cars you will ever drive.

The S2000 has all the ingredients of an exceptional sports car, front-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive, and perfect 50:50 weight distribution with only two seats.

The Honda S2000 was first introduced in 1999 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Honda and was produced for ten years - during that time, only 8,000 came to the UK.

The car was given the chassis designation AP1 and featured a bulletproof 1,997cc inline four-cylinder DOHC-VTEC engine. The F-series engine in the S2000 held the crown for the highest specific output of a naturally aspirated engine for ten years, only being dethroned with the launch of the Ferrari 458.

The output was thanks to the 11.7:1 compression ratio, roller rocker valve train, variable valve timing (VVT), and impressive 1.82:1 rod-to-stoke ratio that let the 2-litre engine hit 9,000 rpm.

This car is coming to market with over ~17 years of ownership with just one former keeper prior. The extremely low mileage S2000 is finished in Silverstone Metallic (NH-630M) with red leather seats and boasts a full main dealer history.

Meet the owner

We have enjoyed the S2000 immensely - but in the past seven years, it has had very little use.

Melvyn purchased the 2002 Honda S2000 on the 28th January 2005 with just one previous keeper. Since buying the car, it has clearly not been given a great deal of use over the years, as you can see from the mileage records. Even with such little use, Melvyn has ensured it has been maintained and taken for an MOT each year.

Unfortunately, the car has covered approximately ~600 miles in the past seven years due to health issues. It is now being offered for sale to let someone else have the pleasure of driving the fantastic S2000 rather than it sitting.

Exterior

Weighing in at just 1260kg, the S2000 looks fantastic and is light enough to give excellent class-leading handling.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are the original 5-spoke alloys and have some age related white-worm under the lacquer, mainly focused around the centres of the wheels. An easy repair for your local alloy wheel specialist.

Fitted with matching Bridgestone Potenza in 2016, these are in excellent condition and have covered just ~521 miles.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the Honda is in very good condition for the age.

Looking around the car, the panel gaps are nice and even for the doors, boot and bonnet. However, there are some age related marks, like some worming on the leading edge of the bonnet, which has developed from a couple of stone chips, and a very small ding just behind the S2000 badge on the nearside wing.

The roof has a couple of splits on the lower corners, which have been patched up, and there is a small nick in the roof on the passenger side. The roof operation is quick and smooth, going up and down with no hesitation. There is also the original tonneau cover included, which has never been fitted by Melvyn in 17 years.

Paint

Finished in Silverstone Metallic, Melvyn tells us that in his ownership, the car has never had any paint and there was also no paint before by the previous keeper.

There are a few light marks and stone chips here and there, and the car would benefit from a machine polish that should remove some of the lighter marks.

Again, we have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the paint for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The windows all around the car are in excellent condition with no apparent scratches; however, the windscreen's lower edge does have some signs of delamination. The side windows look to be in good order, and also the rear screen in the convertible roof. The window trims are in good condition with no corrosion or perishing.

The headlights are both in good order, as are the rear light lenses, none of which have any chips or cracks.

Interior

Red leather is the perfect contrast against the Silverstone Metallic and black roof.

Seats and Carpets

The red leather seats are in fantastic shape designed to offer plenty of support as you throw the S2000 around the twisty bits. There is some slight age related wear to the driver’s bolster and base, which could possibly be recoloured. The black door cards are in good order with no damage or noticeable scuffs to point out.

Still fitted with the original mats, which are in good condition, these have kept the S2000’s carpets nice, and still have a bright red finish with no signs of wear. Inside, the boot is also well presented and lifting the floor panel reveals the tool kit and owners manuals.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good order, with no damage to be seen on the upper or lower dash sections. The digital display instruments all work as they should, with the odometer showing ~54,822 miles.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel is in good condition with no signs of excessive wear, and the aluminium topped gearknob is in good order with just some light scratches to the top.

Mechanics

240bhp out of the box for a normally aspirated 2.0 litre engine is enough to get you into trouble - especially at 9,000rpm.

Engine and Gearbox

Engine start! That's the button to fire up the incredible 2.0 litre VTEC engine, and so it does perfectly! There are no untoward noises to come from the well maintained engine bay, and everything looks to be in good order with no signs of any leaks.

The S2000 has had a new clutch fitted by Vertu Honda (previously Hepworth Honda, where it has been serviced for the past 17 years); this was carried out just 17 miles ago at the cost of £1816. The change is smooth and precise through the six-speed manual gearbox, and the car pulls strongly up to 9000rpm!

Suspension and Brakes

As you would expect from Honda, the two-seater roadster does exactly what it was designed for and handles superbly. There are no noises coming from the suspension, and the brakes bring the car to a halt just as they should in a straight line, with no juddering.

The Drive

The S2000 ticks all the boxes for a two-seater roadster and more! Mainly thanks to the great looks, excellent handling and the screaming 9000rpm 2.0 litre engine. It also has quite a decent-sized boot making it practical and easily has enough room for a couple of cases.

Electrics and Other

The switchgear in the car is in excellent condition, with no apparent signs of wear to the buttons or dials. There is a small scratch on the silver surround on the left of the steering wheel. The air conditioning doesn’t blow quite as cold as it once did. This could possibly require a regas but would need to be checked by a specialist to confirm.

The handbooks are present for the S2000, along with a large selection of MOT certificates and main dealer invoices, most of which are for MOT and service work apart from the most recent, which was for a new clutch fitted.
