Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner and Photographer

After nearly four decades of being on the road this beautiful SL is just as good today as it was during the 80s.

Classic Mercedes-Benz production stands a real test of time. Widely thought as being "over engineered" in its prime, it's a real testament to Mercedes that these cars still work well and still represent great value for money considering the craftsmanship involved manufacture. It's easy to see why these models were such a long standard production for the company going on to become the second longest single series ever produced by Mercedes.

This sharp looking stylish icon is ready to use all year round with a choice of soft top and hard top options complete with the car, and the sought after rear seats with fold down parcel shelf option. It presents in very good condition, coming to market from short term ownership but with just 5 former keepers registered before. Finished in "Champagne" (473), with a tan leather interior, this classic is very much ready to go.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Charlie the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

These cars just scream the 80s, the style, the colour, and I absolutely love it for it.

We met with Charlie, the owner, he let us know "I've always had an itch to own one of these cars, the 80's SL was a car that I'd seen on countless movies and TV shows. Growing up with this car was a big part of my childhood and made me fall in love with them". He purchased the car earlier in the year, to scratch that itch, and has very much loved "wafting" about in it at the start of the summer.

Charlie tells us he has over 10 cars, and with a move to London and work outside of the UK too, he doesn't want the car to just sit unused, he says "I want someone to love and cherish it and enjoy it the way that I have". He will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Mercedes build quality still shows its quality today; beautiful panelling details, clean sporty lines and style in a class of its own.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 15" facelift alloys, the wheels have a few small signs of markings on the them, the nearside left wheel has a little section of curb rash but doesn't cause an issue to the overall look of the wheels. Given this is a late 80s car we weren't too concerned about the condition of the metalwork but focused detailing may be beneficial to give them a fresh look later in their life.

A good set of clean Michelin Pilot HX tyres show on the car from all four corners. The tyres look good, sidewalls present well but it's worth noting they are older items. There is a Pirelli Vizzola tyre spare in the boot section, which appears to have not been used.

Bodywork

The shut lines look really great around the Mercedes, all sitting well, its obvious from looking over the car that its been really well looked after over its lifetime. The build quality still shows through to this day as we checked over the car on our visit; bonnet and boot all shut really nicely with the panels gaps all looking to line up well. The doors have a nice satisfying "clunk" when shutting and sit with no issues against the bodywork.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the images and videos for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

An excellent late 80s Mercedes-Benz "Champagne" paint colour is applied to this SL. It's in remarkably good condition given the age of the vehicle, just some very minor age-related stone chips around the car we noticed, and a few minor scratch marks but nothing that concerned us or that we think couldn't be freshened up with a polish up over the paint. Overall the car shows itself really well and with that colour, a true icon on the road.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen and glass sections are in great condition, looking over the top of the windscreen there's some slight markings from the convertible roof lining up against the trim but nothing untoward given the age of the car.

Trim around the car shows well, some slight pitting on the chrome style trim around the door edges but in keeping with the rest of the car itself. We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our "Exterior review" video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different angles.

Interior

Unmistakeable Mercedes-Benz class is everywhere on this 300 SL. Comfy seating, inviting drive and a real sense of luxury.

Seats and Carpets

Comfy tan leathers greet the driver from the interior, with wood veneer panelling on show across the centre console. The car is fitted with the desirable rear seat option, with a fold-down parcel shelf. The seats themselves are in good shape in the cabin with the leathers appearing in good condition. These look to have been re-trimmed be a previous owner in the past, and we did notice some evidence of a repair job on the piping section of the drivers seat which looked like it could do with attention at a later stage.

The carpets are in a really great condition with no signs of dampness and checking underneath the carpets on our visit gave no unwanted surprises. There was a slight section of wear on the drivers section where your heel would sit but nothing that was overly concerning for us.

More details of the interior can be found in our image gallery, please head over to take a look through for yourself.

Dashboard

Overall the dashboard looks great, sitting inside the Mercedes feels comfortable with everything where it should be. Opening and closing the glovebox gave us no issues on our visit.

We covered some more detailed shots of the interior in our hi-resolution gallery, take a look over the images where our aim is to take you through the 300 SL's interior as if you were actually in the car.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is showing signs of use but is in keeping with the age of the car. The Mercedes branded centre badge on the steering wheel shows itself well and the auto gear selector looks to be in good condition. Overall, nothing that we observed to be out of the ordinary on our visit.

Mechanics

One of the most desirable engines in the R107, the 3.0L straight six is arguably the perfect match for this generation of SL.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine bay looked good on our visit and there were no signs of oil leaks that we observed. Running the car from start up gave us no cause for concern and looking over the car initially, the engine idled steady when stationary.

On our drive out we didn’t notice any gear issues with the gear kick down working as it should, overall the engine felt smooth whilst driving. Take a look at our "On the Road" video to see the Mercedes start up from cold and out on the road.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out Charlie took us around some local roads, the braking felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey. We heard no knocks, bangs or squeaks from the suspension.

The Drive

The Mercedes felt comfortable on our test drive, riding with no issues through our journey on the road. Steering felt great on the car with no shakes and there were seamless changes through the gears. Overall, a really smooth and enjoyable ride.

Electrics and Other

Charlie did let us know that the added Blaupunkt stereo was not working, and he hasn't testing the heating/fans etc only using the car in the summer, but to the best of his knowledge reports that the rest of the electrics are functional and operational.

A great condition windshield, toolkit, emergency triangle and jack are in place in the boot section, as well as the original wipers.

History and Paperwork

Just 5 former keepers, this 300 SL presents in very good condition in the classic colour of Champagne, and a desirable later facelift model.

We've detailed the MOT certificates and receipts for services carried out in the paperwork gallery section. The Mercedes has a great level of service history direct from the dealership and carries a recent MOT also which is set to expire in 2023. Its apparent looking over the condition of the 300 SL as it stands today, that great care and attention has been paid to the car over its life which is evident in the quality across the car.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Charlie,
One of the pictures appears to show a bit of rust on the offside front wheel arch. How extensive is this? Is it affecting the call below it?
Are there any other area where rust is showing on the bodywork??
Thanks
Anton
