Introduction

Alan Stuart
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

Porsche hit on a winning formula with the 911 – elegant lines, stunning looks and fantastic performance, it's no wonder the model has stayed in production all these years.

Porsche have barely changed the elegant lines of the 911 over the years giving the cars a timeless quality. Few are complaining and since the first iteration of the 911 hit the world stage in 1963, the cars have enjoyed a passionate following. The brainchild of Ferdinand “Butzi” Porsche, grandson of the company’s founder, the 911 was first conceived in 1959. Since then, it has become one of the most recognisable sports cars in the world. While Porsche have been at the very forefront of performance car technology the lineage from that first car has remained clearly in evidence with each new model.

This 2004, 911 Carrera S is presented in the ever popular "Basalt Black Metallic" over black leather interior, and comes with the highly desirable Sports Chrono Plus pack. The car had an engine replacement at Porsche Centre Sutton Coldfield under warranty in 2009 which included the later IMS bearing, giving peace of mind for the typical 997.1 S issues. It comes to market with extensive documentation showing works over its life amounting to an estimated £17,000.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Omar the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

For me Porsche is, and always has been, a timeless classic combining the perfect shape with precision handling - put your foot down and it transforms into an incredible machine.

Omar loves both the look and the driving experience of the 911. He tells us “The 997 in Carrera S form is the perfect shape, combined with excellent road feel and precision handling - something I feel is lacking in most modern cars”.

He goes on to say “This particular car had a new engine fitted by Porsche under warranty in 2009. This newer engine has the revised IMS bearing which is great for peace of mind”. He's only had the car a short while, and recently had the brake fluid changed at Porsche. A house extension is on the cards and so the car needs to find a new home. Omar is happy to answer any questions about his car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Instantly recognisable the world over – stylish flowing lines give this iconic sports car poise, elegance and a sense of purpose.

Wheels and Tyres

The 19 inch, 15 spoke alloys, optional "SportDesign" (407) wheels look superb and appear to have been recently refurbished. We could find little evidence of scuffs, marks, or curbing. The centre caps are showing some signs of age but remain in good condition.

The wheels are wearing Pirelli 295/30/ZR19 on the rears and 235/35/ZR19 tyres on the front, which present well and have good tread remaining from our quick view. Take a look through the photo gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

Overall, the bodywork presents well. The car stands straight, shut lines look good and we could see no sign of panel creasing or distortion. Boot, bonnet and both doors open and close with the precision associated with Porsche engineering and the tilt and slide sunroof appears to work well, as can be seen in the “On the Road” video. This car is fitted with the after market “Zunsport” grill which not only looks great but provides protection from the ingress of leaves and road debris.

There is some corrosion on the rear wheel arches as can be seen in the images and video. This would benefit from attention to bring this area up to the high standard of the rest of the car. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Basalt Black Metallic" (LC9Z) paintwork looks great and retains a deep, even shine across the car. Omar confirms he arranged a stage 1 polish to remove swirl marks and the car presents really well as a result.

There are, inevitably, some minor marks and touch up repairs here and there as would be expected on a car of this age and mileage. This is most noticeable on the front and on the forward edge of the nearside rear wheel arch. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Side windows, rear screen, mirrors, and lenses all look good, and we could see no cracks at all, or significant chips or scratches. The offside of the windscreen is showing some marking from the wiper blade but is otherwise in good condition.

Trim presents very well with the chrome lettering retaining much of its original shine. The bonnet badge is in good condition showing only very minor signs of ageing, and as mentioned an upgraded grill has been fitted to the lower front bumper.

Interior

Legendary Porsche build quality inside and out - fantastically styled, purposeful, and comfortable cabin with highly desirable Sports Chrono Plus.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather seats are firm and comfortable while appearing free from rips and tears. The front seats are showing some wear, mostly on the driver’s side, entirely consistent with the age of the car, and it's worth noting they come with heating too. Rear seats appear in very good shape and carpets look clean and in good condition.

The headlining presents very well, and we could see no significant marks, damage, or sagging. Overall, the interior of this car looks very good. Do check out the hi resolution videos and images to assess the condition for yourself.

Dashboard

Dashboard appears free from damage with no splits, rips or tears in the leather covered dash top. The centre mounted chronograph looks fantastic and appears to work as expected.

Dials are clear, perspex appears unmarked, all switches’ dials and gauges look free of damage and Omar assured us everything works exactly as it should.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The stunning, black, and silver steering wheel looks in good condition with only minor, age related marks. The Porsche centre badge has retained its colour and the centre boss looks in good shape. The Tiptronic switches look in good condition and work well as can be seen in the “On the Road” video.

The automatic gear selector and centre console present well and, again, are only showing minor wear consistent with the cars mileage.

Mechanics

With the iconic flat six engine, S spec at 3.8L, it pushes out some ~355BHP to the rear wheels alone.

Engine and Gearbox

This car had an engine replacement under warranty in 2009. The engine used, being a later version, had the improved intermediate shaft bearing (IMS) which had been a vulnerable area on these cars. In addition to that, there is a more recent inspection invoice to check for bore score.

With a 5-speed Tiptronic gearbox, and switches positioned on the steering wheel, this set-up can give you the best of both worlds. In addition, the “Sports Chrono Plus” pack offers “Sport Mode” which enhances the handling, throttle response and Tiptronic gear change characteristics to provide a more responsive and communicative drive.

On our cold start the car fired up straight away, idled steadily, emissions appeared clear and there were no warning lights showing on the dash.

Suspension and Brakes

With ventilated discs front and rear underpinned by Porsche engineering you can be sure this car has the stopping power required. The front discs and pads were replaced in October 2021 by German Autocare, and the recently repainted red calipers look fantastic through the 15 spoke alloys.

The Drive

On our test drive the car drove exactly as a Porsche 911 should – it was planted, comfortable and sure footed while the engine felt responsive across the rev range. The gear changes through the 5-speed auto box were slick and seamless while all dials and gauges seemed to work as expected. We could detect no knock, bangs, or rattles and, overall, it was a great drive – this is a Porsche 911 after all!

Check out the "On the Road" video to share in our experience.

Electrics and Other

All lights, switches, dials, and gauges appeared unbroken, and Omar assured us all electronics work exactly as Porsche intended. The car is fitted with its original CD/Radio, electric windows and sunroof and GPS although this is, of course, with 2004 software.

History and Paperwork

The magic of the 911 never fades – this is a chance to own a well looked after example with a popular specification and solid history.

This lovely Carrera S comes with good service history and extensive documentation showing over £17,000 of expenditure, over £4,000 of which has taken place in the last year. The all-important record of the engine replacement is included as are the original manuals and service schedule. On top of this, the car had a bore score inspection in April this year before purchase, showing that the replacement engine wasn't suffering from the typical S issue.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
