Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

A special Audi / Porsche collaboration has made this a rare cult classic, if you know, you know.

The RS2 was one of the worlds first "fast" estates showing that practicality and performance wasn't just a myth. Being the first Audi to wear the RS badge and the company's first avant high performance estate, this car holds high prestige amongst car enthusiasts.

Audi and Porsche worked closely to heavily modify the top of the line 5 cylinder engine to push out ~311BHP, and other elements like suspension and braking systems too. For the time, this was one of the fastest factory produced cars on the road and helped it gain the landmark status. With only around ~3,000 of these cars ever made, and under 200 reported as being available in a RHD option, it is firmly in the rare and collectable category.

Having covered only around ~3,000 miles in its 4 year current ownership, this RS 2 Avant in the iconic "Nogaro" blue over a matching "Nogaro/Black" alcantara interior is often "the" picture that comes to mind when you hear RS Avant. The car comes to market having had a major service ~2,500 miles ago which included belts and tensioners etc, and is from an enthusiast owner with an eclectic collection.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Tom the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

With so few of them being made, it's surprising sometimes the number of looks you get from those in the know!

Tom has owned this RS2 Avant for ~4 years, covering around ~2,500 miles in that time. He has quite an eclectic collection with a penchant for the estates and goes on to tell us "I've owned a few Audi's in my time, the majority of which have been in the Avant style, I just like the simple lines and build quality".

The car comes with a folder with lots of paperwork showing the quite extensive maintenance it has seen along with use over time. Tom tells us "The drive on this Audi is fantastic, when the turbo kicks in its a pure adrenaline rush. The car stops great and is just a real fun drive. Having added no major alterations or modification over my ownership I've tried to keep it simple. I did have the cam belt replaced on its last service and the car detailed recently".

With a number of other cars, and looking at how much use this car has seen, he's decided to bring the car to market, "Having driven only around ~2000 miles over my 4 year ownership, i'm now looking to sell this and my other collection of cars. I've just hit the ripe age of 72 and am now looking to put the money towards other things in life". Tom will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

With Porsche design not just stopping at the mechanical elements, the Audi's 17" wheels and door mirrors give the game away for the keen eyed.

Wheels and Tyres

The 17" 5 spoke Porsche "Cup" alloys look to be in a great condition, with Porsche red brake callipers matching all around. These wheels make the car instantly recognisable for those in the know.

A full set of Toyo Proxy Sport tyres wrap each corner of the car. Showing a manufacturing date of 01/21 and being approximately a year and a half old, the tread is good on the surface. View the gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

Arguably the original fast estate car, on this RS2 Avant the shut lines, sills and panels all look to align nicely, we didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. The exterior presents well, with no significant issues to be concerned with. Typical car park door marks are something that many cars unfortunately pick up over the course of ownership, of which, we noted a couple on the door panels.

Looking across all areas of the car in detail including the boot and footwells, the car looks overall to be in a great condition and something that we think the new owner would be really proud to own, and the car comes with extensive paperwork showing any previous work actioned.

Highlighted through our hi-resolution images and exterior video, we take a closer look at how the car looks across various angles. Take a look over the video for yourself for a detailed look where we take in various angles and viewpoints for you to get a real taste of what's on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in arguably the colour to have this car in, "Nogaro" blue, overall the paint showed to be in a respectable condition across the car, Tom mentioning that he'd had the car detailed recently. Looking really closely at the detail, we did note some slight lacquer lift on the passenger door side but given the lovely condition of the rest of the car, not an area that was a cause for concern.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Glass and seals throughout look to be in a great condition. We didn't notice any chips or cracks in any of the glass. Some other Porsche parts on the RS 2 Avant include 911 (993) wing mirrors, and front bumper mounted indicators.

We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our "Exterior Review" video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different perspectives.

Interior

The sporty cabin of the RS2 boasts Recaro sports seats, carbon fibre trim, and alcantara inserts, a really stylish cabin.

Seats and Carpets

Fitted with the Recaro sports seats, they are trimmed in black leather with "Nogaro" blue alcantara inserts. They look smart with their colourway being a special touch, showing in a good overall condition we noted no rips or tears only observing some areas of wear on the drivers bolster seat edging. Rear seats showed a similar great overall condition even over the backs of the seats.

The car is fitted with over mats across the flooring, although not original they do a good job tying the interior colour match together with blue piping along the edge. We noted a slight area of wear on the drivers side carpet area where your heel would sit when driving.

Dashboard

Console materials are designed with style in mind across the RS2, carbon fibre panels face the driver and passenger areas and looked great alongside the leather and alcantara trim. The stunning "Nogaro" blue of the paintwork is matched across the seating and door panels sections with a lovely colourway throughout the Audi's interior.

We covered some more detailed shots of the interior in our hi-resolution gallery, take a look over the images where our aim is to take you through the interior as if you were actually in the car.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A great condition 3 spoke leather bound steering wheel is all set for the new owner. Nicely inset with Audi badging as well as an Audi / Porsche RS emblem, this is ready to be driven.

The gear stick looked to be in good condition and showed little signs of wear, the gaiter looked smart also. There was some slight evidence of markings in the small area in front of the gear stick which we've covered in our gallery section for you to see. Looking around the cabin area, the handbrake and centre console areas also looked to be in a good condition.

Mechanics

With a stiffened and sharpened Porsche chassis and the Quattro four wheel drive setup, what you need for that all important ~311BHP Porsche modified 5 cylinder turbo engine.

Engine and Gearbox

The standard 5 cylinder Audi unit was heavily modified by Porsche to become a high performance ~311BHP unit from factory, the RS2 is still a real powerhouse today. Attention to detail is still apparent even in the engine area with the 'RS' of the branding highlighted in red, a nice touch on a clean looking engine bay.

One of the modifications to the car is the addition of the Samco Sport intercooler and coolant hoses. Sound deadening sections looked to be in a good condition and help contain some of the growl from the engine, for the rare times you'd like a quieter ride. And for the times you want a bit more aggression on your journey out, the Milltek sports exhaust really sounds the part.

We noted no issues from start up which we've highlighted in the "Cold start" section of the "Mechanical review" video. Take a look over the video for yourselves to hear the RS2 Avant fire up from cold and take in the lovely sounds of the turbo charged engine. We go into further detail about the Audi and take it out on some local roads to get a better sense of what this really special car is all about.

Suspension and Brakes

All that power under the bonnet needs something to safely control it. With the Porsche collaboration not stopping at the engine and performance, the Porsche brakes work as they should and look great with a nice contrast against the RS2 paintwork. Tom, the owner, conducted a brake test for us when out on the journey, we observed no pulling from the brakes to either side and the vehicle slowed as it should.

The Porsche designed suspension showed no sign of issue with no knocking or banging heard when we were in the car or out on the road. Although manufactured to be a more sporty set up, which is typically a firm ride, the journey out in the Audi was really comfortable and felt great on the road.

The Drive

For those in the know, this Audi is such a special car and being super rare, it's something that you're unlikely to see out on the road. Porsche designed suspension and braking systems plant you safely to the ground and stop you in a manner you'd expect from this car.

Despite being manufactured as more of a high performance sports car, the RS2 still remains comfortable and enjoyable to use especially as it boasts that Avant estate style boot and four wheel drive Quattro system. These features make it great for all kinds of weather conditions and situations.

Electrics and Other

Our "Mechanical review" video takes in a few extra glimpses over the electrical features of the car. We observed the voltage meter, battery level indicator and dials working as they should.

The car has a working Becker Grand Prix stereo / radio system, with its straight forward looks it doesn't spoil the impression of the cars dash and cabin area. Other features such as the glove box and sun visors drop down and raise back up as they should with no issues observed.

Tom, the owner, let us know that the air conditioning was in a good working condition, although if being fussy, could benefit from an air con recharge for the new owner to reap the full benefits. Take a look over the image gallery as well to see more about what the RS2 has on offer.

The personalised number plate is not included in the sale - awaiting new plates.

History and Paperwork

This rare UK RHD example comes to market from ~4 year ownership, covering ~2,500 in that time, and is presented in a desirable Nogaro blue over black/Nogaro blue interior.

Having travelled just over ~2000 miles over its last 4 years of ownership this is a car that has been truly cherished and used for pure driver enjoyment. In terms of work, the car has benefited from a full service which included belts and tensioners when Tom first purchased the car, and full set of Toyo Proxy Sport tyres replaced in 2021, carry a respectable amount of tread on them still. Ready to drive - this is a really rare example of a such an iconic car.

We've detailed the MOT certificates carried out in the paperwork gallery section, the RS2 Avant comes with a current MOT running no advisories on its last test and validated until May 2023. It comes with many receipts for services carried out on the Audi over the years. With over 100 documents detailing work carried out, its apparent to see the owners over the years have clearly cared about the car and its upkeep.

Importantly, the personalised number plates are not included in the sale. Tom has requested the change and is awaiting the new V5 to arrive from DVLA, collection of the vehicle to be completed after.

Should it be needed, Tom would be happy to answer any queries or questions you may have to support your purchasing decision in the comments section below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

Hi Tom,
Lovely car. Wanted to know what works you would carry out if you were to keep the car for another year + and also, if during your maintenance, any items have been suggested for attention.
Has the underside/suspension been overhauled at any point and how would you score this area of the car?
Really keen to view the car, ideally tomorrow so would be grateful if you could connect with Trade Classics to facilitate this.
Many thanks,
Riz
