Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

A timeless V8 burble matched with upmarket British decadence for Triumph.

The Triumph Stag has so much going for it and its high survivability rate confirms this opening statement. The intoxicating combination of its wonderful engine soundtrack, versatile roof configurations, space for four people and excellent parts network should place this high on any prospective classic car owner, who simply wants a non-nonsense cruising car with a sense of style. Conceived during a troubling time for its parent company, it was up to owners and specialists to harness the potential of the car and essentially finish off the development work.

And this is exactly the case for this automatic 1974 Stag in "French Blue". With just 5 previous owners under its belt, the car appears to have led a charmed life, with several documented engine rebuilds as well as continuous maintenance and improvements over the years. Bought as a solid proposition by its current owner ~2 years ago, it has undergone a further £7,000 worth of spend, which means that it is very much on the button and ready for use.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Khuram the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've trusted the car to several specialists over the two years of ownership and it's up to a standard I'm happy with.

As a long-time admirer of the Stag, Khuram came across this solid example two years ago and has spent a considerable amount of time and money on the car to ensure it runs as good as his expectations.

Used as an occasional car, the Stag fulfils his needs - a stylish comfortable cruiser that will allow him to accommodate his family. Eager to find another Stag which he can build to his requirements, he has decided to sell the car to make space for a potential future project. Khuram will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

In a lovely French Blue colour, this Stag has a solid and cohesive exterior presentation, with decent brightwork and good weather protection.

Wheels and Tyres

The Kent alloys are in very good shape, with no signs of scuffs or road wear, and the black paint looks good providing a nice contrast.

They are complemented by a set of Accelera tyres, all are under 10 years old and display healthy tread. View the image gallery to see further detail.

Bodywork

The external presentation is positive on this car, with a slight scattering of tarnishing noted on the lips of the wheel arches. There is a little bubbling on the base of the front wings but otherwise, the exterior is pleasingly cohesive, with a decent level of panel fit and equal door panel gaps. The underside of the car is in good shape too, with minor surface blemishes noted on the base of the sills. The chassis rails and suspension mounts look good. The boot floor, hood well and engine bay are solid, with no issues noted in the inner wings.

The car is free of significant dents and the doors open and close without obstruction. The white hardtop has a handful of minor scabs close to the chrome trim but is a surprisingly good pairing with the blue body.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Painted in "French Blue", the finish is one of the many highlights of the exterior presentation. It has even coverage with a good lustre and deep shine with no hazing. The finish is generally free of road wear, with very little noted in terms of chips or scratches, with a handful of marks noted on the edges of the bonnet and front valance.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is free of any ageing or blemishes with decent seals noted all around. The chrome is of a good standard, with minor pitting noted in places, but nothing that would warrant trouble.

The front grill has a light peppering of age. All the lights and lenses are in good shape.

Interior

The cabin has been well preserved with much of its originality intact.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in black, the seats are in very good shape, with no signs of wear other than loose beading noted on the driver's seat.

The carpets are clean and display no water retention. The boot carpet follows the same script and suggests low use.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in excellent shape, with no damage other than a few signs of age noted on the veneer facia and instrument bezels, but should be only considered as cosmetic issues.

The switchgear and controls are in good working condition, except for the non-functional Pioneer USB/CD player which needs to be wired up and the non-functioning clock. The door cards are tidy too.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both the steering wheel and gear stick reflect the positive upkeep of the cabin, with nothing more than the lightest of wear noted.

Mechanics

One of the many highlights of this Stag is its mechanical attention and work over the years.

Engine and Gearbox

The car starts up without any hesitation, with the V8 rumble sounding tight without any unwanted knocking. A little excessive exhaust spluttering was noted but soon cleared up once the engine was idling.

The gauges remained in check as it was running, with no issues noted from the recently fitted 'Double S' £520 stainless steel exhaust. The car has seen several engine rebuild in recent years and the owner is confident that any historical woes associated with the Stag have been banished.

The new expansion tank with an audible coolant loss alarm, a Kenlowe cooling fan and a reconditioned radiator, along with breather pipes should instil confidence in the car. Following a recent £4,000 engine rebuild, the Stag's running has also been improved by the virtues of a new fuel pump, alternator as well as a pair of replacement Weber carbs. The 3-speed auto gearbox was reconditioned in the mid-90s and was proven to perform well.

Suspension and Brakes

The braking aspect of the car, like the engine, has not been neglected and recent bills show a considerable amount of attention. Their operation can't be faulted and stop the car effectively without any issues. The car's suspension was compliant too, with no creaks or thuds.

The Drive

The Stag was marketed as a top-end cruiser when conceived, and this example hasn't lost any of that allure. It drives very well, partly due to the lavish attention and careful upkeep over the years.

More than able to keep up with modern traffic, the creature's comforts of power steering, a slick and effective gearbox and instant power delivery make it a useful and practical option for those who like to wish to experience the delights of the Stag with the knowledge that it has seen a considerable amount of spending in recent years.

Electrics and Other

The car is fitted with a tasteful and functional boot rack. The soft top is in good shape, with no damage noted. It offers a tight fit and there were no issues with raising or lowering.

The car is fitted with a recently installed alarm along with front and rear inertia seat belts. The hardtop will come with its stand too.

History and Paperwork

Just 5 former keepers, and with £7,000 worth of invoices since 2020 on top of the previous spending, this is a ready and raring to go Stag.

The car comes with over 100 invoices stretching back to the mid-90s and has not seen more than ~10,000 miles since then. It appears to have been subject to restoration at some point too. Its early life seems to be well represented, with its initial service stamps still evident in the original service booklet, along with several artefacts from when the car was ordered new from a dealer in Stockport.

The ownership profiles all suggest that the car has been in the hands of an enthusiast for much of its life with just 5 documented owners, the records of its MOT which go back to 1978 support the car's current mileage as reading correctly. The car has a good pile of Rimmer Bros invoices, with more recent invoices coming from Stag specialists which cover two engine rebuilds after the unsatisfactory completion of the initial one. The older invoices include a fully reconditioned M35 auto transmission from Paragon Motors of Coventry, several engine repair bills, a PAS steering rack and evidence of regular maintenance.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
