Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

Four-seater luxury open motoring with a charismatic V8 soundtrack, a stalwart in the classic British lineup.

Conceived as an upmarket open-top cruiser, Triumph knew a thing or two about balance and poised driving experiences. Their inclination to install a V8 into a graceful Michelotti-penned open-top car, with enough space for four adults and their luggage, with very few direct rivals suggests that Triumph hit upon a piece of marketing genius.

This 1974 MK2 version has had the benefit of cosmetic spruce up, with a documented respray, mechanical and cosmetic improvements and the welcome reinstallation of a V8 Triumph engine to replace a previously installed Ford V6. Well looked after and nicely presented and has only covered ~1,000 miles in the last six years.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Nice to drive, this one is become my daily driving car!

The Triumph Stag is one of John's favoured classics, having owned several over the years. He was aware of this particular car and kept an eye on it and grabbed the opportunity to buy it.

Sensibly he decided to re-install a Triumph V8, which is said to have been rebuilt in 2020. He has used the car for work journeys and the odd weekend run but is now being sold due to a loss of storage. He'll be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments below.

Exterior

The elegant lines are complemented by the well-applied Mimosa Yellow paint, cutting a dashing figure in traffic.

Wheels and Tyres

The Kent alloys are in good condition, in line with the age of this car, with no notable defects.

They are finished off by a full set of Forceum EXP 70 tyres which were fitted to the car during its renovation and still display a healthy amount of tread.

Bodywork

The structure of the car is solid, with no immediate problems noted on the chassis rails, floor pan, boot floor, inner wings and engine bay. Externally the body presents well, with a healthy panel fit and decent panel gaps.

The car is free from day-to-day damage, with no dents or discernable scuffs. The hood well is intact and dry. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Enhancing that 1970s vibe, the Mimosa Yellow paint was applied to the car in 2010 after a sympathetic restoration on a solid base. It has even coverage, with no flaws in terms of runs or overspray and is free of significant chips.

A handful of blemishes were noted on the leading-edge metal above the headlamps and slight imperfections on the bottom of the doors. There are also signs of age on the lowest sections of the arch lips and sills. All are at a manageable stage.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good shape, with evidence that new rubbers were part of the restoration. The chrome trim on the whole is decent, with signs of age and minor imperfections noted on the front bumper. The soft top rear plastic glass is free of damage.

Interior

The original interior has lasted well and adds to the authentic driving experience of the Stag.

Seats and Carpets

The seats have generally worn well, the driver seat has a little wear on the bolsters and a little discolouration was spotted on the rear bench.

The carpet shows some age-related discolouration but is intact with no signs of dampness. The headlining is clean with a handful of light marks and the door cards show minor wear but are in keeping with the presentable aspect of the cabin. The boot carpet is finished in black and appears to be free of water ingress.

Dashboard

The dashboard is well presented, with minor signs of light wear, but the key elements such as the padding and facia veneer are intact. There is a little more wear noted on the centre console veneer but nothing too unsightly.

All of the controls and dials are in good shape, with some of the minor controls showing their age. The car is fitted with an MP3/WMA/WAV player. The speedometer needle jumps around somewhat but has a well-known and curable fix.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Mountney steering wheel is in excellent condition having only been on the car for three years, the gear lever shows wear in line with the age of the car.

Mechanics

Regular maintenance and use help complement the classic driving experience of the Stag.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine powered up with no hesitation, running smoothly with no unwanted noises from the V8. The oil pressure and temperature remained in check while the engine was idling, with no excessive smoke noted from the exhaust at any point.

The engine presentation is very positive and aligns with the owner's conversation with us that it was rebuilt in 2020 and installed to replace the Ford V6 that was in there when he originally bought it.

The manual 4-speed gearbox operates well, with the overdrive fully operational. There were no reported issues with the clutch.

Suspension and Brakes

The braking system has seen plenty of attention over the years and operates well with no juddering or poor performance.

The suspension was absorbent during the test drive, with no knocks or thuds noted during the short test drive. The owner informed us that the steering felt light to use with no excessive play.

The Drive

The Stag's original purpose as a roomy relaxed cruising car still rings true, and the drive across the urban streets not only felt cosseting but attracted plenty of admiring glances.

No rattles were heard from the engine, with the ride was free of any significant wobbles. Watching the temperature like a hawk, the needle remained in the safe zone, as the car idled in traffic the fan didn't kick in at all. No loud noises were heard from the rear axle.

The purposeful V8 burble mated to the exhaust sounded magnificent, with the owner demonstrating the control and flexibility of the manual gearbox set-up.

Electrics and Other

The hood is clean and shows no evidence of outdoor storage, it raises and lowers with ease. The T-Bar has intact padding.

History and Paperwork

Subject to a quality repaint and refurbishment in 2010, the car has also seen plenty of mechanical renovation too.

The car comes with a binder full of invoices, including paint materials and a host of mechanical and cosmetic items. The car was subject to repaint in 2010, from its original white to the current "Mimosa Yellow". Included in the binder is a series of photos that recorded the repaint process.

At the same time, a 3.0 Ford Essex engine was installed, however, the current owner has since located a rebuilt Triumph V8 engine which has given the car back some of its originality. Additional recent spending includes attention to the brakes, bushes, service items, exhaust components and a new radiator. It was last MOT'd in July 2022, but it is MOT exempt.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
