Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Powered by a punchy Raceline modified 1.8L Zetec engine producing ~180bhp and weighing little over ~600kgs - a blisteringly quick car.

The Stylus was originally conceived by Jeremy Philips as a development of the Fury and is a Sylva born design. Featuring a wider body and track, the Stylus allowed for a more spacious cabin, boot space, and further benefited from a one piece moulded body to allow for easier panel alignment during the build stages.

In summer of 1996 Jeremy Philips sold the rights to the Stylus to Specialist Sports Cars who continued to make improvements to the already popular design of the Stylus before handing the reins over to long time employee Tim Benbow who has continued on the legacy of the Stylus since 2004.

This particular example is a "Road and Track" edition, benefitting from wider track and independent rear suspension. Having been owned since new by the vendor, this example comes with the Raceline modified Zetec engine, which gives the car a power to weight ratio of 300BHP per tonne, hence the 300 RT moniker. In its most recent service it had new ignition leads, plugs and a cam belt.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Peter the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The 300 RT brings motorbike performance to a four wheel platform - it’s absolutely exhilarating!

Having already won some silverware in the classic car class of Hagley and District CC and Loton Park Championships, Peter was in the market for something more modern than his "road modified" 1972 Triumph Spitfire Mk3. Luckily his son, Chris, was employed as a senior engineer at Specialist Sports Cars at the time and so they opted to purchase cars from the factory, with Peter choosing his 300 RT and Chris going for the bigger engined 500 RT.

Peter was drawn to the "sensible" power to weight ratio of the 300 RT along with the closed body design as opposed to the open wheeled designs of the Caterham cars. Since then he has competed in hill climb sprints and track days using his 300 RT to great success.

Sadly due to work commitments and illness the car has sat largely unused for the last 13.5 years and has clocked up very little mileage in that time, leading Peter to make the decision to sell rather than let the car gather dust in his garage. Peter will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

The 300 RT’s closed body design encompasses fantastic aerodynamics and sleek bodylines to create a smart and well proportioned sports car that stands out from the crowd amongst even the most prestigious of line-ups.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with 15” Compomotive CX-R alloys, which are well presented and show no visible curb damage or signs of corrosion. Likewise the Bridgestone Potenza tyres look to have a good amount of tread remaining and, whilst being DOT marked 3803, don’t appear to be perishing or suffer from any cuts to the sidewalls.

Bodywork

The one piece fibreglass moulded bodywork is in overall good condition. As would be expected with a fibreglass body the panel gaps aren't what you'd get with a metal bodied car, and there is some usual evidence of surface cracking in high stress areas, however the bodywork on the whole is solid and only suffers from cosmetic imperfections.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

With the car having been used in competition motorsport, the paintwork does suffer from some stone chipping and some slight imperfections in line with its use over the last 20 years. However Peter tells us the paint is original and has not been painted since it left the factory.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The car features very little glass, with the windscreen and side windows being cut down for aerodynamics, however these items are free from any visible damage.

The headlight covers are in good condition and don’t suffer from any major chipping, however the stainless steel trims on the front wings are missing three out of four inserts.

Interior

A semi-stripped cockpit is what you’d expect from a purpose built race car - the race spec bucket seats, four point harnesses, and small dish steering wheel all look perfectly at home in the 300 RT.

Seats and Carpets

The one piece moulded bucket seats are basic but conform well to the driver and/or passenger, holding you in place nicely when combined with the four point LUKE harnesses. The seats are free from any obvious damage and have passed FIA inspection numerous times.

The cockpit does surprisingly feature carpeted footwells, a nice touch considering the race-focused design, and these carpets appear to be in good condition and free from any real damage.

Dashboard

The dashboard is a simple affair, with only three central gauges, two clocks behind the wheel and little more than a fire extinguisher pull and a killswitch. The speedometer unfortunately does not work, having stopped working a short time before the car was put in storage. However Peter simply uses a GPS speedometer app on his phone to keep track of his speed. The dashboard features carbon fibre trim, along with the centre console, this left unpainted to add some further sporting style.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Raid HP steering wheel is small and leather-bound, perfectly sized for the cockpit and fitting in nicely with the simplistic design of the rest of the cockpit. The steering wheel appears undamaged and free from any blemishes. Likewise the gearstick, whilst showing some signs of wear, is in fair condition and free from any major damage.

Mechanics

Powered by a Raceline modified engine, this lightweight kit car was built at the SSC factory in Wales, overseen by SSC senior engineer Chris; Peters son.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine is an ex new factory 1.8L Ford Zetec, which has been worked on by Raceline to produce ~180bhp with their ported head and fast road cams, and power is delivered via a 5 speed manual gearbox capable of propelling the 300 RT from 0-60mph in just 5s.

As can be seen in our ‘On The Road’ video, the engine starts from cold without major issue and certainly performs well on the road, pulling strongly and slipping through the gears with ease. It has recently been serviced, including the jets in the Weber carbs being cleaned, new plugs and ignition leads.

Suspension and Brakes

The RT variety Stylus’s benefit from independent rear suspension and a wider track, meaning the car handles fantastically. The suspension appears to be in good condition, making no untoward noises during our time on the road with the vehicle. This car has upgraded lightweight front uprights and rose jointed wishbones with lightweight rocker arms and the Gaz spring damper option.

The 300 RT has Willwood 4 pot callipers on the front and drum brakes for the rear, providing more than adequate stopping power for such a lightweight car. The discs and callipers appear to be in good condition with no signs of heavy wear present on the discs.

The Drive

The 300 RT was engineered with one thing in mind; fast fun - and that is exactly what it delivers. With its fantastic power to weight ratio, responsive steering, sharp handling, and low centre of gravity, the 300 RT provides a well balanced and extremely engaging drive all wrapped up in a road legal yet track ready package.

Electrics and Other

Whilst the car does have some minor issues with the speedometer, the rest of the electrics work as expected and a new battery was fitted just before the vehicles most recent MOT.

History and Paperwork

Peter has owned this car from its creation and has kept it garage stored its entire life, with low miles.

Owned since new, factory built, and quality checked by Senior Engineer Chris, this 300 RT has every right to call itself one of the better examples available. With a modest mileage on the clock before it stopped working and the car was put in to storage, the best this car has to offer is still some way down the road.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Peter, a couple of questions if I may: I’m 6’3” – will I fit? How much is the annual road tax please? Looking at the paperwork there doesn’t seem to be a current MOT? Could it be driven if it did have a current Mot? I live on the south coast and don’t have any way to get it home. Do you have a local friendly garage who could get it through an MOT at my cost – obviously. Thanks Peter
