One of the first generation XK8s to hit British roads - and this early 1998 Jaguar XK8 coupe presents itself beautifully in Carnival Red and Oatmeal leather interior.

Originally conceived in 1996, the Jaguar XK was the direct replacement for the ever popular XJS of the time, with the first generation of XK models being marketed as the XK8. Being the first 8 cylinder model since the Daimler 250, the XK8 was the poster car for Jaguar's new AJ-V8 engine platform which provided 4.0L of displacement and, sharing its platform with the Aston Martin DB7 at the time, the XK8 was sure to be in good standing when coupled with its classic Jaguar comforts.

We get many XK8s submitted to us each month, but as you know, we are very picky and take on only the best examples. This particular example comes to us from owner Ian with only ~36,400 miles on the clock. Well presented throughout this is a fine example of a modern British classic which is both comfortable and capable.

Meet the owner

The XK8 simply oozes class, it is to me still a charismatic high performance car, with a luxury interior and immense comfort.

Ian wasn't new to the world of the XK8 at the time of purchasing his current pride and joy, having owned one some years ago he decided to let it go due to work commitments, however upon retirement Ian felt the need to itch the ever present scratch that is the 4.0L V8 Jaguar experience.

After finding this example that had been garaged from new by the sole previous owner, he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to own another XK8 and so he purchased the car, blown away by the condition, mileage, and Carnival Red exterior / Oatmeal interior which is a combination he had rarely seen.

Having owned the car since 2019 Ian has had minor corrosion work carried out, as well as having had the headlining replaced as it began to sag, beyond those small jobs the car has been faultless and needed nothing more than standard servicing and maintenance.

Due to a looming relocation without adequate space for his Jaguar, Ian has sadly decided to let his XK8 move on to a new and loving owner.

Exterior

With its Carnival Red paintwork, elegant bodylines, and unmistakable Jaguar styling the XK8 oozes class and style.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are in good condition across the board, with no visible signs of curb damage or corrosion present save one mark on the drivers front wheel approximately one inch long, the silver paintwork is undamaged.

The wheels are wearing Pirelli PZero tyres which also look to be in good condition, with no signs of damage to the tread or sidewall of the tyres.

Bodywork

The bodywork is in good condition, with no visible signs of damage or any dents or ripples. Ian has had some corrosion issues sorted on the lower sills, the invoice for which can be seen in our paperwork gallery. All body lines look even and symmetrical, and all panels look straight too.

Paint

The Carnival Red paintwork really pops against the silver wheels and looks to be in great condition with no major chipping, scratches, or scrapes to speak of. The colour match is even and consistent across the board including the areas of corrosion repair Ian has had carried out.

Glass and Trim

The glass is free from any scratching or stone chips, and the surrounding trims do not appear to be perished or suffering from any damage. Likewise the limited trim pieces around the car do not appear to be damaged either.

Interior

The Oatmeal interior is nicely offset against the Carnival Red exterior of the car, highlighting the burl wood dashboard and providing a luxurious feel synonymous with the Jaguar marque.

Seats and Carpets

The leather upholstery looks to be in good condition, with no evident signs of damage to the hide, likewise the bolsters are free from any major wear and show little more than an age appropriate patina.

Dashboard

The burl wood dashboard is in good condition, with no visible damage or signs of delamination which can be common with this style of dashboard, and all clocks / gauges are in fully working order too.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is matched with the rest of the interior, combining the same leather and wood finish as the upholstery and dashboard. Both of which are in good condition and not showing any signs of major wear or damage.

The wooden gear stick is in fantastic condition, being an automatic car the gear stick does not see the same level of use as a manual stick would, and as such has seen very little wear over the years.

Mechanics

The 4.0L V8 produces ~290bhp, sent to the rear wheels via the 6 speed automatic transmission and propelling the car from 0-60mph in just 6.7 seconds.

Engine and Gearbox

The 4.0L V8 engine offers a good balance of refinement and performance, quiet and controlled in day to day driving, but really opening up under load and providing the torque and power you would expect from a V8.

During our “On The Road” video you can see the car start from cold without hesitation as well as perform on the road, during which the car performs as expected with no issues from engine or gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension as expected is both comfortable and refined, providing plenty of comfort on longer journeys while still offering a good balance of performance at speed. The suspension made no noticeable creaks, groans, or knocks during our time with the vehicle, and the brakes also stopped the vehicle without issue and without any untoward squealing or grinding.

The Drive

As to be expected with this calibre of car, the drive the XK8 provides is sublime. With oodles of class and buckets of comfort, the Jaguar lineage of luxury motoring is once again upheld in this fantastic example of British engineering and with ~290bhp at its disposal the XK8 is certainly no slouch, so why compromise on power or practicality when you can have both with the Jaguar XK8?

Electrics and Other

During our time with the car we checked for any non working electrics and found nothing to report, the radio, cassette player, headlights, indicators, and air conditioning all work perfectly and without fault. Something that Ian mentioned is that he believes the car was fitted with an optional extra electro-chromatic self dimming door mirror, the nearside mirror experienced a liquid leak and SNG Barratt replaced with a standard item, as the dimming was no longer available, the internal rear view mirror experienced the same problem and was replace with a new one.
