Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

A timeless V8 burble matched with upmarket British decadence for Triumph.

Triumph knew they had a potential world-beater with their impossibly glamorous Stag and was optimistic about the car's unique place in the world of 1970s luxury motoring. Powered by a 3-litre V8, in a spacious elegant Michelotti penned design, it could accommodate 4 people with the promise of open-top motoring. The secret to a good Stag was straightforward, it simply needed regular maintenance to its tuneful V8. Despite the initial teething issues, a very healthy amount of cars survive today and offer an almost unmatched series of qualities to potential owners - the Stag is famously simple in terms of design and has an excellent parts network.

Finished in "Pimento red", this 1976 Automatic Mk2 model has an exhaustive history of invoices, MOTs and evidence of a comprehensive restoration. Treated to a £3,400 spruce up two years ago, including a service along with mechanical and electrical renewal, it also comes with a full year's MOT for peace of mind.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Matt the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The car has a digital radio installed, but I tend to listen to the sound of the V8!

Matt bought the Stag as a weekend and occasional use car, having bought the car from a classic car specialist. Captivated by its V8 soundtrack and space for his family, he has truly caught the classic car bug but admits that he has now lined up a 2 seater as a potential replacement as his kids have grown somewhat since purchase so his new car will be for just himself and wife to enjoy.

He also admits that the car is a bit of a tight fit in his small garage! Matt was also keen to stress that the car needs a handful of minor tweaks and fixes to the hood and interior as seen in photos, which given the parts availability will not be an issue. He will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Ready to use and enjoy, the presentation of the car is really something to behold.

Wheels and Tyres

The Minilight design style alloy wheels are in excellent shape, and are complemented with a set of Maxxis tyres, all of which are less than 4 years old with plenty of tread. They give this stag something of a more sporty look than you typically see with the Kent wheels.

Bodywork

The visual presentation is very impressive, with the structure, inner wings and panel work looking cohesive. The hood well was not only solid but bone dry too. The panel fit and door shuts are very good, having been subject to a comprehensive restoration around 30 years ago, but the overall condition suggests it has seen plenty of cosmetic upkeep since.

The car is free of damage, other than a minor spot of under-paint bubbling noted on the boot lid and a spot of surface corrosion noted under the off-side rear carpet floor.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Pimento Red" paint has been well applied, displaying a deep lustre and even coverage with no signs of poor preparation or dull paint. There are no significant signs of road wear, with very little in terms of chips.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The chrome work is in great shape, with evidence of renewed trim throughout. No issues were noted on the glass. The soft top is intact, with nothing much more than loose stitching, which appears to be most evident on the rear nearside. The car doesn't have a hardtop.

The hood raises and lowers well, with the nearside rear frame assembly needing minor adjustment. The nearside front interior handle will also need replacing. The T-bar assembly is in good shape.

Interior

A successful combination of retaining many original interior parts with new elements retains the cabins 70s ambience.

Seats and Carpets

The black Ambla upholstery has been well maintained, with nothing much more than a minor tear noted on the driver's seat bench. We noticed mild carpet dampness in the otherwise dry cabin, but no water retention under them. The dry boot has been retrimmed with recent carpeting, with mild signs of age noted underneath them.

Dashboard

The dashboard is acceptable for a car of this age with minor signs of wear noted on the black coverings. The veneer has lasted well, with no obvious signs of wear. The switches and controls are good, with a little age noted on the instrument bezels, all are said to function.

The car has been fitted with a DAB USB retro style Radio. The off-side door card needs a minor adjustment, but otherwise, the fittings are in good shape. The headlining is good, with no damage other than a few superficial marks.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The car is fitted with an attractive Luisi steering wheel which is in excellent condition adding to the interior presentation. The gear lever is in line with the age of the car, but free of damage.

Mechanics

Subject to thousands of pounds of mechanical and electrical attention, the car performs admirably.

Engine and Gearbox

An eager starter, the particular cold and damp night didn't hinder the engine starting process and the car fired up immediately and idled well. On the move, the car didn't splutter and the engine ran smoothly with no undulations. Once the engined warmed up, the initial exhaust vapour cleared up.

The owner is happy with the performance of the automatic gear change, with no notable 'clunk' or issues with the engine kick-down. The engine presentation is good, with some signs of age noted, but evidence of low use and regular maintenance should outweigh this.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has seen a substantial amount of attention to its mechanics over the years, and the steering and suspension components are testaments to this. No issues with the braking were noted too, with the car free from any untoward noises at town speeds.

The Drive

Known for its relaxed and lusty power delivery, the V8 engine is highly addictive and a blip on the throttle for the sake of it is irresistible. The car holds the roads well, with no knocking or thuds noted, with the wheel remaining vibration free at town speeds. The owner has not reported any issues with the engine, with the temperature and oil pressure remaining in check during the drive. Recent invoices for a viscous fan control coupling, Revotec fan kit and oil cooler parts should allay any fears.

Electrics and Other

The car is fitted with LED bulbs including the interior and warning light cluster, with the wiring updated accordingly. The car is also fitted with a rear wind deflector.

History and Paperwork

With invoices going back to 1989, this example even has its first MOT certificate from 1979, a comprehensive restoration some time ago has ensure this classic Stag can still be put to use.

Supplied new by Lex Mead (Windsor Road) Triumph in May 1976, the car has seen just 5 previous owners over its lifetime, with the previous owner keeping the car for 5 years. The car has an impressive amount of provenance, including its original service book and owners handbook, as well as a stack of MOTs, including its first ticket from 1979. The paperwork provides evidence of a comprehensive renovation by a Stag specialist backed up by a series of photographs dating from the late 80s/early 90s.

The car has seen occasional use since then, having only collected 3,000 or so miles over the last two decades, but has clearly seen substantial upkeep over this period including, a fuel pump, bushes, suspension and steering work. More recently, £4,000 has been spent on a brake overhaul, Revotec fan kit, a retrimmed windscreen, electrical work and several cosmetic improvements. The car will come with a new MOT and was last serviced less than 2000 miles ago.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
