Taking over from the Mercedes SL55 AMG - the SL63 AMG was a fantastic addition to the AMG lineup.

When the SL55 AMG was launched, new features such as the electric removable hardtop and ABC suspension (Active Body Control) transformed the SL pushing technology to the maximum, making the Mercedes one of the most technologically advanced cars of its time. It was in 2008 that there was another change; this time, the engine was increased to the outstanding naturally aspirated 6.2 litre V8. Although the previous 5.5 litre supercharged engine is fantastic, you will soon understand just how good the 6.2 litre is as soon as you hear it.

This lovely low-mileage example comes to the market after two years of ownership. Presented in triple black, an always popular colourway for modern sports cars, this car comes with all the goodies you'd expect for a top of the range Mercedes like fully adjustable massaging electric seats with "Air Scarf" feature, glass panoramic roof and a very smart finish to the interior of ash wood in black.

Meet the owner

The SL 63 is an amazing car to drive - It puts a smile on my face every time I start it.

It was pretty much a dream car for Ian and one which he still loves to look at and drive. He's had the car for ~2 years, and in that time has covered ~1,500 miles. The car comes with a healthy number of service records from Mercedes-Benz, and most recently it has had an oil and filter service, along with some new suspension components at Ians local garage.

Unfortunately Ian suffered an accident some 25 years ago, which now means getting in and out of the low-down SL 63 is becoming an issue and quite painful for him, this is why Ian has decided to part with the monstrous Mercedes. Exterior

The party trick of the R230 has to be the retractable hardtop roof, this particular SL even has the optional glass roof fitted.

Wheels and Tyres

The 19” multi-spoke AMG wheels have been finished in gloss black and are in excellent condition with no damage spotted. The centre caps have also been replaced for some Affalterbach AMG, which are also in good order.

The tyres are 255x35xR19 on the front and 285x35xR19 at the rear, and these have a good amount of tread remaining. Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks to be in excellent condition on the SL63 AMG. The shut lines are matching and even, with no issues to mention. Of course, being the SL 63 AMG model, it comes with the AMG styling package, which consists of different bumpers, front spoiler, side skirts and boot spoiler.

The retractable hardtop is in excellent condition and is fitted with the optional extra glass roof. This all works as it should, going up and down in around ~16 seconds each way.

Paint

Finished in "Obsidian Black" (code 197U), the paintwork on the SL does have some age-related chips, and being black, you do tend to notice swirl marks a lot more, especially in bright sunlight. These could possibly be reduced or removed by letting a detailer work his magic and machine-polish the car, it would help to elevate the quality for sure.

Glass and Trim

The windows are all in good condition with no apparent scratches, and the seals also appear in good order.

The Bi-xenon headlights are in good condition with no splits or cracks, and the same can be said for the lower fogs and rear lights.

Interior

Designed with comfort in mind, the seats in the SL 63 will leave you feeling nice and fresh after a long journey.

Seats and Carpets

Trimmed in "Anthracite Black" (code 211A) leather and given the AMG badge of approval, the seats are in excellent condition. There are no major signs of wear to the bolsters, and everything is working as it should, including the Mercedes Airscarf system which is a game changer when it comes to driving with the roof down on a crisp morning. The door cards are both excellent, with no noticeable scuffs or marks.

The carpets are in good condition with no signs of excessive wear. AMG mats are fitted, which also are in very good order. The boot is clean and tidy, and the space-saver spare wheel is in place. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is finished in black leather to match the seats and has no damage which we could see. In addition, the ash wood trim pieces in black are in excellent condition with no splits or cracks.

Looking at the instruments reminds you just exactly what you are sitting behind the wheel of, as you read AMG 6.3-V8 across the bottom. These work as they should, with no warning lights displayed when the engine is running, and the odometer shows a reading of ~53,982 miles.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The flat bottom AMG Performance (code 281) leather steering wheel has no signs of heavy use, the buttons are in good condition, and the flappy paddle shifters are mounted to the rear.

The automatic gear selector is combined with the engine stop/start button, and this is in good condition with no real wear to be seen. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

0-60mph in 4.5 seconds and a limited top speed of 155mph - the 6.2 litre V8 AMG engine is enough to make the hairs on your neck stand up when revved.

Engine and Gearbox

Technically a 6.2 but marketed as a 6.3, some say it’s “to comply with German law, Mercedes-Benz is required to round up the displacement figure”, and others say “to commemorate Mercedes' famed 6.3 L M100 engine”, but let's face it, after 6.2 litres, who's counting.

The 6,208cc (6.3) fires up just as it should, with all of its ~507BHP ready and waiting, the car sounds fantastic through the four tailpipes. It can cruise along gently with a smooth low tone, or it becomes a V8 orchestra when the loud pedal is pressed. The SL changes through the gears smoothly, or you can choose to use the flappy paddles for a more spirited drive. Watch the video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

Out on the road, the SL63 handles brilliantly thanks to the ABC (Active Body Control) suspension system, and no knocks or bangs are coming from either corner of the car.

The huge yellow AMG calipers bring the car to a halt as you would expect, and in a straight line, with no juddering through the pedal.

The Drive

The SL 63 AMG is at the top of the tree when it comes to looks, comfort, handling, performance and, of course, the sound. Luxurious leather seats hold you tightly, and the ABC suspension system takes care of any adjustments needed to cope with the road ahead. As you would imagine, the performance is superb from a 6.2 litre V8, but the sound is something else altogether.

Electrics and Other

Inside the SL 63 AMG, the switchgear is in good condition, and everything is reported to work as it should. The spec list includes the Parktronic system to the front and rear, which is working correctly. The car comes with the premium sound system from Harman Kardon as you'd expect, there is also satellite navigation, but this probably isn’t as up-to-date as a more modern unit.

History and Paperwork

With just ~53,982 miles covered, in a popular and fully loaded spec, this SL 63 AMG comes with a decent history and represents quite good value for money.

It's a car that ticks all the right boxes with spec, condition and history. The service history is in good order, the next is due around October 2023 or 65,000 miles, whichever comes first, the MOT is valid until 27.10.2023.

Two keys are present, along with paperwork backing up the service work which has been carried out at main dealers or specialists.

Please note the cherished number plate will be removed from the car.
