Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consignor

A delightfully British sports car, the TR6 is a fine example of what classic motoring is all about; wind blown hair, picnics in the countryside, and spirited B-road driving.

The Triumph TR6 was originally introduced in 1968, with the first ever production model being built on the 19th of September that year as a ‘69 model year vehicle. Powered by a 2.5L straight six engine and driven by the rear wheels via four speed manual transmission, the TR6 came with either fuel injection or carburetors as we have on this particular example, making the car capable of ~106bhp and a top speed of ~111mph.

This particular TR6 was originally made for the American domestic market and was first registered in 1972, having spent the start of its life in the states the car was then imported to the UK in 1988 and finally purchased by current owner Jonathon in 2018. During its time in the UK this car has undergone not one, but two restorations, with the most recent restoration being a full body-off restoration carried out to a very high standard. Being an American "CC" car, it is fitted with the carbs that helped the car meet US regulations at the time.

This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Jonathan the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I was looking for a good condition TR6 and this one was by far the best on the market at the time so I simply had to have it.

When Jonathan decided to purchase his TR6 he spent a good amount of time looking for the right car, and when this one came up for sale from the TR register area chairman, it had been fully restored to a very high standard, registered with the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust, and needed absolutely no work.

When speaking with Jonathan he states the car has some minor choice modifications in the form of; Spax suspension, poly bushes, alloy fuel tank, uprated diff carrier, stainless steel exhaust, fuel pressure regulator, spotlight relays, Mazda MX-5 seats, later 2000 gearbox. All of this combines to make the car the perfect driver's car in Jonathan’s eyes and he states the car needs no work and is simply ready to be driven. His reason for sale is simply due to lack of use, with the car being in such good condition he wants the vehicle to be enjoyed and driven as it was designed to be, and will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments below.

Exterior

The sleek design of the TR6 is complemented by its wide front grille, contrasting Laurel green paintwork with silver steel wheels, and upturned slash cut exhausts.

Wheels and Tyres

The silver steel wheels are adorned with original black ‘TR6’ centres, with the wheels being in excellent condition and any signs of major damage.

The Michelin tyres are also in good condition, with plenty of tread left on both front and rear sets. There is no visible degradation to be seen on the sidewalls either and the tyres themselves, whilst being 14 years old (DOT marked 2009), don’t look to be at all perished.

Bodywork

Having undergone two extensive restorations in its lifetime, this particular example is in very good condition and when inspecting the bodywork there really is very little to fault, all panel gaps line up as they should, there are no ripples, dings, or knocks to any of the bodywork, and from what we could see there was no visible corrosion on any of the bodywork either.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

During its most recent restoration the car was painted in British Racing Green (paint code ICI CC43) and the paintwork is in excellent condition, we could not see any stone chips, scratches, or other such defects in the paintwork, and both colour and texture of the paint is even across the board.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass across the car is in great condition too, with no visible chips, cracks, or scratches to any of the panes. Likewise the chromework around the car is also in great condition, along with the convertible hood and plastic rear window.

Interior

The dark interior upholstery sits in perfect contrast against the burl wood inlaid dashboard and the Moto-Lita wooden steering wheel.

Seats and Carpets

The car has been upgraded with the often seen seats from a Mazda MX-5 in order to provide a better seating position for the driver. These seats look to be in good condition with no obvious damage to be seen. Likewise the carpets look to be in good condition with no sign of damage, rips, or tears.

Dashboard

The wooden inlaid dashboard is free from any delamination, with no signs of damage that we could see on the day of our visit, just some ageing to the colour.

The clocks and gauges set into the dashboard all work as expected too, with the odometer having been either replaced or reset during the most recent restoration.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Moto-Lita steering wheel is finished in a lovely wooden trim and is in remarkable condition, with no obvious signs of damage or ageing.

The gearstick is in a matching wooden finish, the top adorned with a “TR Triumph” emblem and this is also in good condition, with no visible signs of wear or delamination present whatsoever.

Mechanics

The 2.5L straight six carburettor converted engine produces ~106bhp and is capable of reaching a top speed of ~111mph, combined with uprated suspension and improved handling, this TR6 is road ready and raring to be driven.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.5L engine looks to be in good condition visually, and during our ‘Cold Start’ video you can see and hear the engine start from cold with no issues, smoke, or untoward noises. Whilst out on the road the engine drove without issue and likewise the gearbox did not suffer from any grinding, missed shifts, or other such issues.

This car being an American "CC" model is fitted with the carbs, rather than the petrol injection system of "CP" cars, to meet US emission regulations at the time.

Suspension and Brakes

During our time with the vehicle we could not spot any faults with either suspension or brakes, the Spax suspension and uprated poly bushes improve handling considerably and in line with the rest of the running gear the brakes stopped the car quickly and efficiently and without any untoward noises.

The Drive

The Triumph TR6 is as wonderfully British as even the best of British classics, a sports car by name and by nature. When driving along with the raspy exhaust note filling your ears, the wind whipping by you, and the joy filled faces of onlookers turning to watch as you motor on by, there are few places more relaxing than the passenger seat of this fantastic Triumph TR6. It has plenty of punch to keep up with modern traffic, handles beautifully on country roads, and provides an experience unlike many others for both driver and passenger alike.

Electrics and Other

During our time spent with the vehicle we of course checked the usual electronics, of which there are less than a handful, and they worked as expected. The car has some upgraded fitted like USB charging points in the boot too.

History and Paperwork

A classic British sports car born for American soil, returned to its home country and painstakingly restored from top to bottom, the condition of this Triumph TR6 is tangible across every inch of the car.

The car's history in the UK is backed up by many past MOTs including its most recent MOT which expires on 18.04.2024. Also in the paperwork are images at varying stages of the most recent body-off restoration which rendered the car in its current form and condition, the car being stripped back to the chassis and built up from that point onwards. It comes to market from ~5 year ownership and we think would make for a great purchase in time for summer.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
