Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consignor

The motoring legend that needs no introduction - there's a lot to like about this pristinely restored example finished in Almond Green and Old English white.

As everyone knows, the Mini is a car that was built for the public, a car that is extremely versatile and practical for day-to-day motoring while simultaneously being able to deliver a fun and engaging drive with its go-kart-like handling. From day one the Mini was a huge success, with 5.4 million Minis sold over its 41 years of production life, and it still remains the best-selling British car of all time.

This Austin Mini 1000 was originally manufactured in 1973, however this example has been painstakingly restored by Coventry Classic Minis in ~2015, who come highly recommended in the Mini community, at a cost of over £12,500. The list of work is extensive as detailed further in the listing, both body and mechanicals having been covered. This mechanically sound and pristinely restored example of the 1973 Austin Mini 1000 has been owned by only two families from new, and is now being sold by the current owner from a ~10 year ownership (family ownership since 1995).

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Andy the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

An experience enjoyed by both my father and I, I had the car restored so I could enjoy it like we used to back in the 90s.

This car has a very simple history of owners, with the car originally being purchased by a Mr. Dawe in 1973, who then transferred ownership to his wife in 1983, before being sold to Andy's father in 1995. His father then owned the car from 1995 up until 2013 when Andy purchased the car from his father for sentimental reasons.

In need of some restoration Andy decided to leave no stone unturned and sent it away to be restored by Coventry Classic Minis wherein they spent hundreds of hours performing an extensive nut and bolt restoration. A full description of works carried out can be seen in the history gallery below. He will be happy to answer any questions you might have about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The iconic style of the classic mini is upheld by this stunning example, finished in Almond Green, with matching roof and wheels painted in Old English White.

Wheels and Tyres

The steel wheels fitted to the car are in excellent condition, with no sign of curbing or damage to the "Old English White" paint, these suit the car perfectly and are colour matched with the roof. Likewise the chrome hubcaps are also free from any visible pitting or damage.

As part of restoration the car was fitted with five new tyres, these are Falken branded and have covered only 1200 miles since fitting in 2014.

Bodywork

The bodywork has been worked on extensively during the restoration in current ownership, with the whole shell being stripped for a full internal/external respray. During this restoration there were a number of panels replaced and various other repairs carried out to the bodywork all of which seem to have been carried out to a high standard.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Painted in the classic and ever loved shade of "Almond Green", the whole car was resprayed as such during restoration, originally having been a slightly darker shade. The paint has been kept in remarkable condition with only a handful of minor stone chips but otherwise no scratches, scrapes, or other such defects that we could see, just ~1,200 miles covered in the car since the restoration.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass all round appears to be in matching condition with the rest of the car, having no visible chips, cracks, or scratches to be seen. Likewise the chrome trim is all in excellent condition too with no pitting or oxidation showing.

Interior

Benefitting from a full re-trim in matching colours with the exterior, the interior of this 1973 Mini 1000 is in beautiful condition throughout.

Seats and Carpets

The seats and carpets were both seen to during the restoration, with the seats being retrimmed in a green vinyl and "Dove Grey" inners to compliment the exterior colour palette, and the carpets replaced with high quality grey material that looks to be in as good a condition now as the day it was fitted. Likewise the seats are free of any wear or damage whatsoever and also look to be as new.

Dashboard

Very much on trend with the rest of the car, the dashboard is in wonderful condition, with coolant, speedometer, and oil gauges all present and correct in their central mounted location on the dash. There are no visible signs of damage to any aspect of the dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is the original item and as such carries its original patina, specifically the worn down paint on the right hand spoke from years of use - a very common thing to see in minis that lends itself to the character of this otherwise immaculate car. The gearstick is in good condition too, with no heavy wear or tear to be seen.

Mechanics

With the original 1000cc engine having been fully rebuilt by Coventry Classic Minis in 2015 the engine bay is spotless and the car performs faultlessly.

Engine and Gearbox

With rebuilt engine and gearbox courtesy of Coventry Classic Minis both items are in excellent condition, as can be seen during our cold start and on the road videos, where the engine starts without issue and performs faultlessly out on the road.

Looking into the engine bay it's clear to see the condition of the engine and ancillaries, with no visible rust anywhere in the engine bay and all components in excellent condition, including the clutch and brake master cylinders which have been cleaned, stripped, and zinc plated for durability.

Suspension and Brakes

Looking underneath the car the excellent condition of the suspension both front and rear is evident, with all items looking almost brand new, a testament to the fact that this car has driven only 1200 miles since restoration.

During the restoration Andrew took the opportunity to upgrade the front brakes to Cooper S items, improving stopping power dramatically over the original items.

The Drive

The perky nature of the Mini really set it apart from the crowd at the time of launch. This small car is extremely fun and offers a very enjoyable drive. Andrew loves driving his Mini not only due to the fun and enjoyable experience it provides, but thanks to the head turning good looks and both the nostalgic and sentimental feeling it provides.

Electrics and Other

During our time with the vehicle we noticed no electrical faults. The car has had its wiring loom inspected, cleaned up and reused as it was found to be in serviceable condition. As part of the restoration the ignition system was updated to use electronic ignition, a new battery fitted, along with battery immobiliser cut off switch.

History and Paperwork

A fine example of a pristinely restored, well looked after, and wonderfully presented Mini 1000.

This 1973 Mini 1000 benefits from a thorough nut and bolt restoration, leaving the car in pristine condition throughout at a cost of ~£12,500 in 2015 over ~14 months. With ownership history traceable through only two families since new (3 former keepers registered), this Mini has seen a well kept life and is an excellent example of a dry stored, fully restored, rarely driven Mini. With only ~1,200 miles since restoration that can be traced through MOT history, this car comes to market ready to be used.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa.
