Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

It’s the sweeping 'A' roads that the 996 really shines, yet just as comfortable on the motorway too - a proper all rounder.

Undeniably a 911 in every sense but the evolution of the 5th generation heralded a reworking of the classic lines. Purists may scoff at the water-cooled 996, but they not only saved Porsche as a company, but it also allowed the iconic 911 to evolve to this day. When introduced in 1997, it rolled in an element of genuine everyday usability with more space and comfort and being a 911, came with plenty of power on tap too.

This late facelift 2004 C4S convertible benefits from the bigger 3.6-litre engine, along with the visual impact of utilising the wide-body look, as well as the brakes and suspension from the Turbo. Fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox, this Seal Grey car with contrasting full leather Savanna Beige interior comes with its factory hardtop, concise documentation of £20k’s worth of maintenance and upkeep along with 12 Months MOT.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Dennis the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

You don't need to drive fast to get an awesome experience from the 996 - I love it.

A 911 has been on Dennis' bucket list of cars to own ever since he mastered the art of driving sports cars, and since took on this Carrera 4S ten years ago. Motivated by its road holding, he appreciates its phenomenal grip and enhances the driving experience by making the most of the soft top experience.

Dennis has made the tough decision to sell the car, as he doesn't want to run two cars at the same time, but has vowed that this will not be his last Porsche experience.

Exterior

This 996 has seen a considerable amount of effort to preserve its visual presentation.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with a full complement of Pirelli P-Zero tyres, both rear items being a recent fitting.

The alloys are in good order, with the rear off-side wheel displaying a little rim damage.

Bodywork

The car has no discernible issues in terms of the structure, i.e. shut lines are good and the doors open and close correctly. The exterior metal too is cohesive with no immediate signs of corrosion that we could find.

The remaining panel and bumper fits are all true, with no issues with gaps. There are a handful of minor dents noted but all could be easily resolved by a specialist.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The metallic Seal Grey paint finish thanks to a ceramic coating treatment reveals an excellent lustre, with an even colour match throughout. The nose is free from significant road wear and chips, as can so often be the case on these cars.

There are a handful of minor marks on the shell, along with a minor irregularity noticed on the bonnet edge, but again, nothing that distracts too deeply. The car also comes with its own custom-made cover.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is good and looks in line with the age and mileage of the car and free of significant damage. All glass and doors have good seals too. The exterior mouldings are in good shape, with just minor scuffs noted on the lowest section of the plastic body trim.

The rest of the exterior plastics, such as the grille covers generally bear their age well. The headlamp lenses are mildly faded (as simple process to restore), but all including the rear units are free from road damage.

Interior

Subject to an extensive interior valet, the cabin is in remarkably clean and original condition.

Seats and Carpets

The Savanna Beige full leather Interior was treated to a detailed internal valet about three years ago, and as a result, the seats have retained their positive preservation with nothing much more than a light sheen of age. All are free from damage.

The carpets and black mats are in good shape, with minor marks but free of heavy wear.

The luggage area was in a similar tidy state, with no signs of prolonged use.

Dashboard

The dashboard, along with its leather fittings is in good condition, with nothing much more than a few scuffs noted on some of the plastics. The fascia is free of damage, with the centre console in good condition.

The leather binnacle, facia and padding are intact. The car's instrumentation has lasted well, with no significant visual defects, all controls appear to be functional and the instrumentation all fully legible.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good condition, with no immediate signs of age, and the gear lever shows just minor wear, but is in keeping with the general positive condition of the cabin.

Mechanics

An astonishing amount of grip packaged into a proven set-up is just one of the reasons why you should own a Carrera 4S.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold-start process was free of any obstacles, with the engine firing up without any issues. The car sounds smooth, with no untoward noises heard from the engine and it idles evenly with no undulations.

The engine is well presented, with plenty of evidence that it is subject to regular maintenance and care.

The engine is standard with the exception of the IMS modification. Fitted with a six-speed gearbox, the owner demonstrated its function to confirm that both the shifts and the clutch are in excellent working order.

No fluid leaks were noted on the day.

Suspension and Brakes

The braking system was demonstrated to be well up to the job, and made stopping the car during the brisk run seem effortless, with no observations of squealing or juddering.

The ride was firm, yet absorbent with no suggestions of issues in terms of suspension knocks or thuds. The steering remained true and didn't reveal any unwanted noises on full lock.

The Drive

One of the traits of the 996 is the relatively docile nature of the car at urban speeds, yet there's no doubting the car's ability to pull away when pressed. The on-the-road video reveals the talent that lies within the 3.6-litre flat-six engine with its all-wheel-drive set-up, which performed on song throughout the demonstration.

Thanks to Dennis' mechanical sympathy for his cars, he has ensured that the mechanical aspect of the 996 has been taken care of, and has not reported any issues with the oil pressure or engine temperature of the car.

Electrics and Other

The car comes with a factory hard top, which has its own cover and stand. It was placed on the car and revealed to be a true fit. There are a few scratches observed on the top of the hardtop, but the overall condition is positive.

The canvas roof operation is seamless and operates with no strain on the motors. The hood itself is good, with a few outside marks observed. There is no evidence of interior dampness or water ingress.

History and Paperwork

The documentation tallies up to over £20,000 worth of spending since 2010 - reassuring invoices.

As a measure of the diligence in the maintenance and upkeep of Dennis' Porsche, he supplied us with a spreadsheet (available upon request) of all of the work carried out since 2010, which states the date, mileage, type of work, contact details and costs of the work. This offers any potential buyer the confidence that Dennis’ fastidious approach to the car should allay any fears about its mechanical durability. It also tallies up the total costs spent on the car over that period, which adds up to just over £20,000.

Naturally, this means that there are in excess of 100 invoices, documents and records of maintenance, including previous MOTs, servicing as well as repair and replacement costs. Much of the work has been carried out by Porsche specialists AD Tech using parts purchased, in the main, from Design 911. In the last five years, the car has seen a new Dansk exhaust system, new tyres, control arms, £690 ceramic coating treatment and £890 deep valet, refurbed alloys, a new clutch as well as dozens of sundry items. Prior to this, the car also benefited from new brakes and discs, a water pump and injectors.

The car is being sold with 12 months MOT and was last serviced in August 2022, Dennis has had the car serviced every year irrespective of mileage which included a new oil filter and fresh Mobil 1 oil each time.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
