I tested a crazy amount of 996s before going for this one.

The car has been really well maintained, which showed up when I had it inspected by a third party. The test drive was amazing and I really loved the rare original Porsche switchable exhaust. I wasn’t set on a colour combo initially, but after seeing lots I think it’s the best. The carbon interior and the extras finally clinched the deal.

Joe has kept on top of its maintenance and he has kept the car in dry and secure storage.

Exterior

The cohesive and pleasingly good condition of the body supports its careful ownership profile.

Wheels and Tyres

The pressure-cast 18" lightweight Carrera alloys are in very good condition with a full set of Pirelli P-Zero tyres.

They're around 10 years old but show a legal amount of tread.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks very good - free of any damage that we could spot.

All doors open and close without any problems.

The panel and bumper fit are flush along with the door shuts all appearing to show even gaps throughout.

Paint

The Arctic Silver paint finish reveals a decent lustre and even colour match throughout, with light evidence of age in places. There are a handful of minor chips, mostly on the nose of the car, but none have penetrated beyond the top coat.

There is a minor scuff on the rear bumper and light chips noted on the driver-side door edge, but the overall condition of the paint supports the owner's assurances that the car has been carefully stored indoors.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen is free from any significant damage, although the driver-side glass shows light surface scoring on the outer edge.

All of the door and glass rubbers appear to be intact.

The lower side skirts show a slight gap to the bodywork, but are not by any means loose.

The headlamp covers have been treated in the past, but do show a typical trait of mild dullness.

Interior

The neatly presented cabin has a handful of subtle but special enhancements that draws your attention.

Seats and Carpets

The dark blue leather comfort seats are aligned to what you might expect for a well-cared-for car of this age, with no outstanding damage other than a little light wear on the driver's side seat.

The carpets and leather-edged mats are intact, with no significant wear and dry to the touch.

The luggage area appears tidy and dry with no signs of heavy use.

Dashboard

The facia and top of the dashboard are intact, with no significant blemishes observed. The centre console is accented with a carbon fibre dash pack and is in good shape, housing the PCM 2 with Bluetooth audio installed - this was done by swapping out the CD changer so that the head unit didn’t change.

The leather binnacle, along with the aluminium-look instrument faces and dials are tidy.

There is minor wear on some plastics and switchgear but nothing too distracting. The air-conditioning and heated memory seats, function as they should. The headlining is intact, with mild signs of wear noted on the door cards, with the rear of the cabin looks in good shape.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The leather 3-spoke steering wheel has a few light marks but nothing that can't be treated.

The gear stick and its leather gaiter are intact.

Mechanics

The delights of the 996 are amplified by its purposeful engine tone and the confidence of knowing its been well maintained.

Engine and Gearbox

No issues were presented during the cold start, with dashboard warning lights remaining off after the engine started. No rattles or unwanted noises were heard while the engine idled. After the initial condensation cleared, the exhausts remained smoke-free. The engine presents well, with plenty of evidence of regular maintenance.

The six-speed manual gearbox engages well with no reported issues with the clutch, having seen the IMS replaced (with RMS and clutch) just ~2,000 miles ago.

Suspension and Brakes

The car rides firmly but confidently, with no observations of knocks heard from the suspension along the somewhat rutted roads.

The car brakes evenly, with no signs of fade or vibrations.

The Drive

A distinctive trait of the 996 is the civility of its driving experience, with the ability to switch into a more focused driving machine with a blip of the throttle. This is enhanced by this car's switchable exhaust control and sports exhaust system, which with the drop-top down, adds to the adrenaline of the Carreras experience.

Remarkably taut around corners, with very little body shake, the grip is exemplary with the owner singing its praises in every type of driving condition. The steering was described as tight, with no thuds or unwanted noises heard from the 4 corners, the 996 particularly in Carrera 4 form has the right balance of ability and usability.

A perfect summer car.

Electrics and Other

The soft-top operates without any issues, with nothing more than a handful of minor marks of age noted on the outside. The inside of the rear off-side C pillar material is loose, rather than ripped and the owner will tidy up this minor issue in time for the handover.

The car also comes with its factory hardtop, which is in decent shape and comes with an indoor Porsche car cover as well as its wind deflector.

History and Paperwork

It comes with a good servicing record and the added assurance of a recent IMS and clutch kit replacement.

The car comes with a positive number of service history stamps by Porsche for much of its life, including a recent Northway Porsche stamp one less than 100 miles ago. Some vital upgrades to the IMS were carried out in 2021, less than ~2,000 miles ago, along with a new clutch kit.

Historical invoices include steering and coolant work. It comes with its original owner wallet, with booklets.

The car is registered with Porsche on the classic car register and the new owner will get a classic register plaque and a few magazines and further Porsche publications delivered.
