Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The 968 Sport has an infectious character defined by that brawny engine and subtle but important tweaks to handing.

Design evolution is very much a Porsche tradition, with each successive model handing over the baton to thrill a new generation of owners. Never a company to take half measures, the roots of the 968 trace back to the 1970s and 1980s, retaining all the positive virtues of the original 924 and 944. It was comprehensively reworked in 1991, the 968 was enhanced by the new curvy styling, 928 style pop-up headlamps and an extensively redeveloped 3.0-litre engine. The most exciting aspect, however, was the addition of the lightweight Club Sport models. Tailored to appeal to the driving enthusiasts, rather than the casual buyer, Porsche GB took the concept of the Club Sport and added a handful of creature comforts without upsetting the balance and ethos of the car. Sharing the same 20mm height reduction as the CS, the UK-only Sport models are fitted with more comfortable seats, rear occasional seating, and additional wiring to accommodate the electric windows, central locking and tailgate release. Out of the 1743 Club Sport models imported into the UK, 306 were converted by Porsche GB to Sport spec, making it one of the rarer production Porsche models ever to be produced.

This original 1994 example is finished in "Grand Prix White" and has been with the same family for ~23 years, with just 1 previous keeper before the current family ownership. Fitted with leather seats, rather than fabric, it has also seen ~£10,000 worth of maintenance in the last 5 years. It comes with a MOT to July 2024, and has two keys, its original owner's wallet and booklets.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Rupert the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's a very addictive drive, we took it on holiday to Belgium a few years back and it reminded me why I love this car so much!

Rupert was actively seeking a 968 Sport and found this car via a Porsche dealer being sold in Norwich. A more than adequate replacement for his beloved VW Corrado G60, the car had been used regularly over the years, including a recent trip to the continent. He has owned the car for ~23 years as mentioned, with just 2 former keeper registered as Rupert changed ownership between himself and his wife. In his ownership he has kept on top of maintenance as required, the car having been serviced last year, and last having had its cambelt changed in April 2021 some ~4,000 miles ago.

Despite its practicality, his growing family means that the car is looking for a new home. Rupert will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Tidy presentation with all of its original trim in place, this rare bird still command respect

Wheels and Tyres

The 17" Cup 2 alloys fitted on this car are generally in good shape, with just some minor surface corrosion noted. Both rear rims have a little curb rash.

The car is shod in a full set of Pirelli P-Zeros, and all are recent fittings and therefore in very good shape. View the image gallery for details.

Bodywork

With this being a car that has been used and enjoyed over time, there are a few very minor metal dents, which appear to be easily treatable and the panel fit, door gaps and overall presentation are positive. All doors open and close without issue. The exterior is generally positive, with some signs of corrosion noted on the wheel arch lips and around the top of the off-side windscreen corner. The structure appears to be solid, with the floor pan, boot floor, inner wings and engine bay looking solid with minor signs of age.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Grand Prix White" paint has even coverage, with signs that the front bumper has seen historical attention. The finish is presentable, with minor swirls noted in line with age and use of the car. There are a handful of minor chips, mostly to the front of the car, but no significant distracting elements.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The bumpers have seen a little bit of action, but given the nature of the car's London location, the damage is not significant, with paint crazing and a few scuffs being the main issue, typical for this era of car. The rear bumper has a slight deformation on the lower near side, which appears to be a mounting issue rather than actual damage. The black seals on the side lower side trim would benefit from investigation too.

The glass and seals are generally good and commensurate with the age of the car. The plastic light lenses show a few signs of age but are generally presentable. The front headlamp mechanism works seamlessly.

Interior

The years have been kind to the interior, Porsche's quality is never in question.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats, which were fitted by Stratstone of Wilmslow when Rupert purchased the car, are in very good condition with some age-related creasing and a little wear on the driver's seat bolster.

The carpets and mats are in good shape, maybe needing a valet, but all are damp-free, including the boot carpet.

Dashboard

The dashboard and centre console is in presentable condition with some age-related surface wear on the very top but free of cracks or damage. The trim is all intact, with the switches and controls in good shape. The binnacle is tidy with legible instruments.

The gauges all work, with some intermittent issues reported with the temperature gauge reading, and typical for this model the digital time clock does not work. The car is fitted with a Pioneer FM Stereo CD player.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with a 3 spoke Porsche steering wheel, it has lasted well with no significant signs of wear. The gear lever is also intact with a tidy gaiter in leather, take a look at the gallery to see it in detail.

Mechanics

The mechanical aspect of this 968 is very positive, and it drives with the same urge as it ever did, the 3.0L engine providing ample power.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up immediately with a single twist of the key, with no warning lights flagged up on the dashboard. The car idles smoothly with no undulations. The engine presentation backs up its recent work and shows decent ancillaries and hoses throughout. Worth nothing, the cambelt was changed in 2021 some ~4,000 miles ago, and ancillary belts like PAS were actioned last year.

The gearbox engages its gears with ease, it has seen some linkage and bush attention in recent years, and the owner has reported the clutch to be perfectly functional. Take a look at the video to see the car in action on the road.

Suspension and Brakes

Fitted with the modified "Club Sport" suspension as standard, the car rides well with no thuds or unwanted noises heard at low speeds.

The brakes didn't reveal any issues, stopping the car without any drama, stopping the car in a straight line and without any judders or noises.

The Drive

For a car that was created as a stripped-out racer, albeit with several 'Sport' creature comforts, the car drives remarkably civilly, although we were treated with a little taste of the potential of the engine on a clear stretch. The 3.0L engine was demonstrated to be torquey and smooth, with heavy traffic not causing any issues with the oil pressure or engine temperature on the day.

The drive was littered with traffic slowing measures, but the humps didn't cause any issues, with no unwanted noises heard to come from the wheels. The steering remained vibration free and there were no groans from the power steering.

Electrics and Other

The sunroof mechanism has been disconnected following an investigation into its function, and Rupert has also pointed out that the rear glass heater is not working at the moment. Other than those items, and the aforementioned temperature gauge, all electrics are working to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~23 year ownership, 2 former keepers registered and ~£10,000 in maintenance over the lat ~5 years, this 968 Sport has been enjoyed as Porsche designed.

First registered in 1994 by Porsche Cambridge, its first registered keeper retained the car until 2000. The current owner then bought the car but transferred the ownership details over to his wife's name in 2007. Recent work includes attention to the temperature sender gauge, and a thorough investigation of the fuelling system, along with a replacement alternator. It has seen work towards its brakes, bearings, and steering and seen some welding. There are also further invoices that cover camshaft timing, belt and idler, gear linkages and bushes. Historic attention to the ABS unit and CV boots, new radiator and tailgate trim is also part of the car's provenance of paperwork.

Complete with its original dealer wallet pack, it also comes with two keys, a functional Immobiliser, has an MOT to July 2024 and was last serviced in July 2022.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Rupert-
Just to clarify- the car has had regular services during your ownership and you have documentation that confirms this (other than the receipts from Pickup Motorsport, 2019 onwards)?
Do you have the original seats?
Regards-
Andy

Hi Andy,

Yes, the car had regular servicing and maintenance, mainly at the time of its MOT. Unfortunately, I didn’t keep the pre-Pickup invoices of work done.

Absent that, in terms of how well the car is maintained and performs, I’d suggest contacting Adrian Slowey at Pickup who knows the car better than anyone and is a Porsche specialist – contact details at the top of the invoice. The result of four years of his work is that the car runs well.

At the end of June, I took the car to Liege and the Ardennes in Belgium – it ate up the kms and handled the smaller roads in the Ardennes beautifully.

The two optional issues are replacing the sun roof mechanism (which I’d put off because some of the invoices were quite ££s) and replacing the rear demister, which necessitate replacing the rear window.

On your second question, I presume you mean receipts rather than seats? I had the seats covered in leather when I bought it.

HI HAVE THESE BEEN DONE THANKS Other advisories include corrosion to the jacking points, and a noisy gearbox pinion bearing. Have these been seen to?

Hi James,
Since 2019, the car has been maintained and serviced by Adrian Slowey at Pickup Motorsport. My advice is to call or email him – his contact details are at the top of the Pickup invoice (this site won’t let me provide them in this reply) – and ask him about the jack points. The gear shift mechanism was replaced fairly recently and changing gear is smooth and noiseless.

Hi Brian on oil change is yes.
The car had its annual service at the same time as its MOT. Another Porsche owner on our street referred me to Pickup Motor Sport and Adrian Slowey and I discussed with him replacing the rear window and reactivating the sun roof.
The rear window didn’t seem worth the cost (to me) and the sun roof was something I postponed as I’d gone through some quite heavy spends.
My suggestion is to contact Adrian direct . The site won’t allow me to put his details here and you can find them at the top of the Pickup invoices.
My only regret with owning this car, other than selling it, is not having found Adrian earlier.

Brian,

I have all the receipts from Pickup Motor Sport since Adrian Slowey began maintaining the car in 2019 and scanned by Trade Classics.

Hi Rupert, a couple of questions:
The service book is stamped up until the year 2000 when you acquired the vehicle, but the only other receipt showing a service is dated 1.7.2022. Has it been serviced (i.e. oil change etc.) in between?
Have you had any quotes for fixing the sun roof and heated rear window?
Other advisories include corrosion to the jacking points, and a noisy gearbox pinion bearing. Have these been seen to?
Thanks, Brian
