Sold on the virtues of versatility, equipment and reliability, all of which made it a best seller in the 70s.

Launched in September 1962, the team at Ford had worked hard and fast to bring us the Cortina within the 20 month deadline they had set themselves. In the first year alone, more than 300,000 units were sold, thus proving that Ford had got the Cortina just right. With other manufacturers aware of the model's success, they started to build their own models to compete with Ford. This is when the Cortina received a major facelift in 1964, which pushed the popularity of the car even further, and by the Autumn of 1966, more than 1 million units had been sold, making the Cortina Britain's most successful car ever built.

This example comes to market from ~7 year ownership, presented in a lovely "Amber Gold" metallic with tan interior, Rostyle wheels and twin spot lights, it's a lovely specification which gives the 1600E that extra appeal, one ready to be used and shown for the rest of summer.

Meet the owner

I've been collecting Ford's since my early 20s, this Cortina is something quite special.

Steven is a huge Ford fan, his father previously owned multiple Cortina's and he saw it as one that fitted into his collection very nicely. This 1600E is one of many from his collection, and due to limited space in his already full garage, Steven has decided to part with this example.

Due to his extensive Ford knowledge, Steven is very particular with selecting the best examples for his collection, this one was no exception - purchased from a good friend, Steven invested around ~£5,000 and his own time to bring the car up to the condition you see today. With Rostyle wheels, chrome detailing and a striking pain colour, this MK2 Cortina offered modern styling and luxury thanks to Roy Haynes design.

Wheels and Tyres

The Cortina is equipped with Rostyle wheels and are presented in very good condition. Steven finished the wheels himself with a fresh coat of paint, and had 4 new Toyo Nano Energy 3's fitted on each wheel, these are dated 2017.

The tyres have covered very little mileage and with no obvious signs of degradation to the outside walls and a good amount of tread left.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Cortina looks in very good condition - during our visit we didn't spot any major marks or damage to the car. The panels appear to algin well, we did notice a very small dent in the bonnet and a small area of surface corrosion to the offside front wing.

Paint

Resprayed in it's original "Amber Gold" colour during the restoration in 2017, the paint is finished to a lovely standard, with even coverage and colour across each panel.

Again, we have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork and paint for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this Cortina example looks in very good condition, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit. The window seals look very good too.

The chrome trim and window surrounds all look in good original condition, with some light pitting and scratching. Please take a look at the exterior photos to see the exterior in great detail.

Interior

Attractive tan vinyl seats with basket weave insets, and a wood trim dash facia elevated the Cortina compared to similar models from other British marques.

Seats and Carpets

The tan leather seats with woven inserts have held their shape very well over the years, just as you would expect for cherished and careful ownership. We just noticed a small tear to the drivers seat which would benefit from being stitched.

A similar story is told with the door cards and black carpets - all very good. Please take a look at the extensive media for a detailed view of the cabin.

Dashboard

The wood facia dashboard in this 1600E shows no signs of any damage or scuffs. With no warning lights displayed, the odometer showed a reading of ~87,840 miles on our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Featuring its original Cortina steering wheel, it presented in good condition with the odd mark to the leather. The the manual gear stick looks in good condition too. Take a look at the image gallery to see the detail.

Mechanics

Powered by the 1600GT block, the car offered ~81BHP, well-proven durability and easy maintenance - an ideal classic for any collection.

Engine and Gearbox

Steven reports the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth manual 4-speed gearbox powering the wheels. Please review the history file to see the work the engine and mechanical parts have had over the years.

Please take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath the 1600E, and the highly original engine bay. In the current ownership, the clutch has been changed, you'll see in the video the manual gearbox working with ease.

Suspension and Brakes

The car sits nice and level and Steven reports there are no knocks from the suspension. The brakes appear in good order and are reported to stop the car nice and straight with a firm feel, the front calipers having been replaced in the current ownership.

The Drive

Steven loves getting the Cortina 1600E out for his local classic car shows and meets. He mentions the 1600cc engine really does go when you work through the gears - especially compared to some older cars from his collection.

Electrics and Other

We didn’t test all the electrics during our visit, but Steven reports that everything is functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~7 year ownership, an older restoration in 2017 and only a handful of miles covered since, it's a lovely example which could be acquired at a very reasonable price.

As mentioned, this car is coming out of a ~7 year ownership with Steven. Over his ownership he's fitted a new clutch, new brake callipers at the front, rear wheel cylinder at the rear, and fitted a new battery. The car comes with a period correct Radiomobile radio, jack, spare wheel, maintenance charger and a stack of history dated back to its first MOT in 1972.
