Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The second front-engined Porsche, this time utilising their very own 2.5 litre engine.

First released in 1982, the Porsche 944 was based on the 924 but featured considerably more striking contours, as well as a redesigned front bumper with a lower spoiler and wider, more angular wings. Powered by a 2.5L inline-four engine, the Porsche 944 Turbo produces ~220 bhp, which is plenty of power for the 1,180 kg chassis. Combined with the typically low Porsche driving position and driver-centric dashboard design, this meant the Porsche 944 offered an engaging and interactive experience for the driver.

The 944 Turbo comes to market with just 4 former keepers, a modest ~69,181 miles registered on the clock, and less than ~3,000 miles covered in the last ~10 years, a truly remarkable note for a car with this heritage. The Porsche has had a replacement clutch in November 2011 along with some other maintenance. A rare model with long ownership and low usage in recent years, it's looking for an enthusiast to enjoy and improve it over time.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Vivienne the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

One of the best cars I've ever driven, it's such a joy to drive which is why its been in the family for so long!

The story around the long ownership of this car is an interesting one, the seller Vivienne tells us "Having been a cherished member of our family household since 2005, the logbook initially bore my husband's name but was transferred to me in 2010. In essence, however, it's been me behind the wheel of this car for the past 18 years. Interestingly, we acquired this car almost by accident – my husband set out to buy a painting many years ago and ended up bringing home a car instead!".

"While we have another daily driver at home that sees more frequent use, the Porsche has primarily been kept in dry storage in the garage. It's a tough decision, but I've chosen to part ways with the 944 and find it a new home. I truly love this car, but I don't use it as much as I would like to. We typically enjoy it during the summer, but with a few overseas holidays on the horizon, we've decided to put the money towards those adventures instead". Vivienne will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

With its wide flared arches and 80s styling - the Porsche 944 Turbo is a fantastic looking car.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original Teledial wheels, these are in good condition and complement the car's look and history. The Porsche emblems are still present on all four wheels, although they do show some signs of discolouration. While the wheels are in good shape, it's important to note they are not in perfect condition, we did notice some curb marks on the rim of the wheels. The car is equipped with Bridgestone tyres, but one of them exhibits cracks on the sidewalls. The date codes on the tires indicate they are from 2010.

Despite their age, these tires are still in good condition and have a substantial amount of tread remaining. For a more detailed view of the 944, please refer to the gallery section.

Bodywork

The car stands straight with shut lines looking good, and we couldn't detect any visible panel distortions. Both doors, the boot, and bonnet open and close smoothly, reflecting the typical Porsche build quality. It's worth noting in the images that we used a prop to keep the boot and bonnet sections open, as the struts were not holding them up, a common issue with this and model range of Porsche.

There's a minor repair on the rear offside panel that looks to be completed to a good standard, another repair on the nearside rear sill which is clearly visible. Fortunately, there are no obvious rust on the front wings noted which is often a common occurrence. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Presented in an elegant black (L041) paint, the exterior colour exhibits a consistent appearance other than the sill repair. The car has been dry stored in a garage, but has likely received a previous respray that exhibits some minor orange peel as pictured.

A machine polish would enhance its appearance, and it could potentially benefit from another respray for optimal results by the future owner. Overall, it presents well from a distance, although there are some noticeable stone chips, particularly on the front trim. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The side windows, mirrors, and lenses all appear to be in great condition, with no visible signs of scratching or chips on the glass.

The rear glass hatch section is in great shape, and the roof section looks good as well. The roof paneling section functions smoothly, and the electronic components are in good working order. However, there is a slight issue with trim when opening the rear hatch, which may require attention from the future owner. Additionally, the rear section load cover may need a bit of coaxing to move.

The seals around the car appear to be well-maintained and consistent with the overall condition of the vehicle. Rubber sections on the interior edges also look good, with only a few minor signs of wear, which is expected with normal use.

Take a look through the gallery sections and review video, we take you across all the areas of the car as if you were standing there for yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail what a lovely looking car the Porsche really is.

Interior

Taking interior styling from the 924, the 944 features comfortable leather upholstery with a simplistic yet stylish dashboard design, and a typical Porsche low and engaging driving position.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in a lovely tan leather, the seats are in great condition, with the drivers seat just having a bit of creasing visible to the leather. Seat backs and rear section showed in very good condition with few signs of wear. There are signs of patina to the front seats but overall a clean would bring these back up to a great standard. The rear seats look barely used over its years.

Carpet sections showed in great condition on the interior having had aftermarket Porsche branded mats in place for some time. Equally over in the boot, this area showed no concerns. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images of the 944.

Dashboard

The dashboard appears to be free from any splits and cracks, and it presents well. This area of the interior is in good condition, with only minor marks noticed. The black-backed clocks and dials displayed nicely, indicating ~69,181 miles at the time of our visit. The presentation of these sections is lovely, and they are fully functional, with clear displays and no obvious scratching on the facings.

However, it's worth noting that the underside of the dashboard could benefit from a cleanup, as there are some visible marks in this area upon closer inspection. Our interior gallery section takes you over some closer images of the Porsche dashboard, head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic Porsche split-spoke steering wheel, finished in black leather, sits at the driver's hands. It remains in good condition and has preserved its appearance, mirroring the overall condition of the interior.

The manual gearstick also displays only a few signs of age-related wear, in keeping with the car's history. Both the steering wheel and the gearstick boast straightforward designs and present beautifully.

Mechanics

Powered by a 2.5L in-line four cylinder engine producing ~220BHP, the Porsche 944 provides a fun and engaging driving experience.

Engine and Gearbox

Porsche has a well-deserved reputation for exceptional quality and high-performance cars, and the 944 is no exception. Its 2.5L engine effortlessly propels the owner to high speeds in no time at all. No issues during the initial startup, as highlighted in the cold start section of the 'Mechanical Review' video. With a 0-60 time of approximately 5.9 seconds, this car delivers impressive acceleration.

While the engine bay remains in its original condition, it does have some leaf debris that needs clearing out. However, the turbo pressure gauge is in good shape, and the oil temperature quickly reaches optimal levels. To get the full experience, please watch the video, where you can hear the 944 start up from a cold state and enjoy the captivating sounds of the engine, and the owner working the car through the gears on the road.

Suspension and Brakes

We observed no knocks, bangs, or other issues from the suspension while driving the car, and it demonstrated solid performance and handling. While there was a slight indication of an oil leak on the underside, it didn't appear to be a major concern.

The Porsche brakes effectively bring the car to a stop in a straight line, with no reported juddering felt through the pedal; they performed as anticipated. Additionally, new front brakes have been recently installed. The stopping power and control felt reassuring and met expectations. For a closer look, please review the mechanical review video and examine the close-up and underside images of the 944.

The Drive

As expected from a car of this calibre, the drive provided by the 944 Turbo is exceptional, with more than enough power, torque, and grip to keep you entertained. We noted no pull from the steering, juddering or unwanted movements.

Overall, the Porsche 944 Turbo is a classic sports car with a strong following among Porsche enthusiasts. It offers a blend of performance, design, and driving experience that continues to make it an attractive choice for collectors and those who appreciate classic sports cars.

Electrics and Other

The Sendai Bluetooth stereo radio, fitted into the dashboard area, was tested and found to be in working order during our visit. An appealing feature is the presence of a functioning digital dashboard clock, often found not working on this era of front-engined Porsche models. Additionally, the 944 is equipped with a working immobilizer system. However, it's worth noting that the bonnet and boot struts aren't functioning correctly, and you might notice in some of the photography shots that we used a prop to keep these sections ajar. The locking wheel nut cover is also included with the Porsche.

The roof section looks good, and the paneling section retracts smoothly without issue. The electronic functions in this area were in good working order as well. Vivienne let us know that she has had no issues with the electrical elements on the car and to the best of her knowledge, everything was working as it should do.

History and Paperwork

Just 4 former keepers, this 80s classic has a modest ~69,181 miles on the clock, covered ~3,000 miles in the last ~10 years and comes to market from ~18 years family ownership.

The Porsche comes with a great amount receipts for works and historic jobs carried out. The 944's MOT is valid until 14th July 2024.

Previous works have included: updated rear brake pipes in July 2019, an upgraded immobilizer alarm in May 2011, system replacement clutch master cylinder, crank sensor, and clutch main unit in November 2011, which cost over ~£2,700, a new battery in July 2007, a reconditioned brake caliper, new brake hoses and pipes, plus an updated cam belt in March 2002, new disc brakes in April 1994, a new rear silencer box and tailpipe fitted in October 1993, and an updated cam belt in October 1992.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle. Should any questions be required, Vivienne would be happy to answer any of these in the 'ask the owner' section.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house. This is an auction on behalf of a trade seller and normal auction rules apply, i.e. there is no warranty, no return policy and bids are binding with more info in our terms and conditions.

On the registration V5 it says the car is a 944 auto, yet the car is a 944 turbo manual. Do you know why this is?

Is the car registered as an import? The history and V5 details it being used outside of the UK.
