Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Produced for just over one year, the Triumph TR5 is one of the true British greats that offers a very rewarding driving experience.

Launched in 1967, the Triumph TR5 is often regarded as the most coveted among all TR models. Its design closely resembles the stunning TR4, crafted by Giovanni Michelotti, and it featured an innovative inline-six engine with mechanical fuel injection that Triumph marketed as the first British production sports car with fuel injection. This marked a significant advancement in terms of both performance and technological sophistication. The Lucas Mk II mechanical injection system, while straightforward, proved highly effective and transformed the TR into a swift and gratifying sports car. Its independent rear suspension further enhanced its agility and provided excellent road-holding capabilities.

Despite its numerous merits, the TR5 had a production run of just over a year, making it exceptionally rare. Additionally, due to its lighter weight compared to later models, it became the fastest TR ever produced.

This 1968 example has been well cared for the past ~16.5 years by our vendor, Robert, and presented extremely well - the rare British classic is ready to jump in and enjoy some open-top two-seater motoring.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Robert the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The TR5 was always too expensive for me, which is why I got one that needed some restoration work.

Robert has owned the TR5 for the past ~16.5 years. When he first got the car, it needed a restoration which he carried out himself, including the paintwork applied in his garage. This enabled Robert to use the car for several years until late 2017 when he decided to take the car to the next level and have it resprayed again. While the car was in the bodyshop, the engine had been removed for a full rebuild along with the gearbox. 2018 saw the car repainted, the rebuilt engine and gearbox refitted, and a re-trimmed interior, which made the car fit for the roads once again.

Robert will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

Similar to the TR4 in looks, the TR5 has some subtle differences but still retains its muscular appearance.

Wheels and Tyres

New Minilite wheels have been fitted and are in excellent condition. These have been wrapped in a matching set of Hankook tyres with plenty of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Robert has fitted new steel wings and quarter panels. These fit well, and the panel gaps have an equal gap, and there were no dings or dents spotted when looking around the car.

The vinyl roof sits tightly and has no damage. The plastic windows are clear with no scratches or discoloration.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Resprayed in 2018, the TR5 was originally going to be finished in the original Signal Red, but the painter decided on Ferrari Rosso Red as it was a brighter shade. The result is stunning. There are a couple of very small blemishes, but the paintwork has an excellent finish with a wet look deep lustre to it.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen is in good condition, with no noticeable chips or scratches. There are just some scratches towards the back edge of the side windows.

The headlight lenses are free from any damage, as are the rear lights. The chrome work around the TR5 is excellent and has a bright tarnish-free finish.

Interior

Fully retrimmed, the TR5 has a charming '60s feel.

Seats and Carpets

The seats have been retrimmed and are in excellent condition with no real signs of wear. The door cards are in excellent condition and have been fitted with wooden door cappings to match the dashboard. A new set of carpets has been fitted and, therefore, is in excellent condition. Inside the boot presents well, and there is a fifth new Minilite spare wheel.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The wooden dashboard fascia has been replaced, and the instruments present well and are working correctly, with the odometer showing a reading of 87,889 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A leather-bound Mountney steering wheel is in good condition with just some small signs of use, and the leather Triumph gear knob is in good condition.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

2.5 litres of Triumph's finest straight-six is coupled to a four-speed gearbox with overdrive.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.5-litre engine has been rebored and had the crank polished before being fully rebuilt. The addition of electronic ignition ensures the TR5 fires up straight away, as you can see in our Mechanical Review video. There has also been a new Bosch fuel pump, relay, and battery fitted.

An overhauled four-speed gearbox is fitted, which has overdrive on second, third, and fourth and is working as it should. Alongside the overhauled gearbox and overdrive, there have also been new driveshafts and universal joints fitted.

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the ride is nice and firm as you would expect from the sporty two-seater. There are no knocks or bangs from any corner of the car, the brakes bring the TR5 to a stop in a straight line, with no issues reported by Robert.

The Drive

If you are looking for some two-seater British motoring fun, the TR5 ticks all the boxes of a true classic. Fitted with the fuel-injected 2.5-litre straight-six engine makes it reliable with excellent performance, and it also sounds fantastic.

The car doesn’t disappoint in the handling department with independent rear suspension; the TR5 goes around corners feeling like it's stuck to the road, as you would expect from a British sports car.

Electrics and Other

There is some minor wear to the switchgear, but all are reported by Robert to work correctly. A period-looking radio is fitted, but Robert says he has never used it.

The overdrive is operated via the stalk above the wiper stalk and operates correctly.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

Owned for 16 years, Robert has saved the majority of invoices for parts purchased.

There are a good amount of invoices for parts purchased on the TR5; some of them are from when Robert purchased the car and carried out the first restoration, then there are more from when the second restoration commenced. Some previous MOT certificates are present, and looking back through the MOT history, you can see that the car hasn’t been used an awful amount and spent several years off the road for the restoration.

Robert is also including some spare parts, which include a new Bosch fuel pump, a new alternator, radiator cowl, and archliner plastics.

Beautifully restored and mechanically in excellent health, this desirable British classic will make the new custodian a very happy person indeed. We’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above. However, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail; this has been done for you to make your assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi. Please advise any history on the chassis? Have the outriggers been replaced and/or has there been any other welding done to the chassis? I note that the vehicle does not have a MOT certificate and has not had one since 2012. Is there any particular reason why you haven’t had the vehicle MOT’d ?
Thanks
