Powerful, smooth, luxurious leather and elegant - could the XK8 possibly be the perfect grand tourer?

These elegant, Fergus Pollock-styled cars were first introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 1996. Available in both convertible and coupe form, they were warmly received by the public, over ~90,000 were sold mainly to the UK and US markets. A worthy successor to the XJS, the XK8 pioneered Jaguar's first homegrown V8. Previous V8 Jaguar offerings had, very successfully, utilised a Daimler unit. However, this new engine was highly innovative and featured 32 valves, variable valve timing and a power output of ~290BHP.

True to its Jaguar pedigree, the XK8 looks every inch the feline predator with more than a hint of E-type heritage. Sharing a platform with the Aston Martin DB7, it’s a beautiful, luxurious and powerful sports car capable of delivering an engaging, communicative and exhilarating driving experience.

This lovely low-mileage example has been cared for by the vendor since late 2010. Spending more time abroad has meant the XK8 hasn't been used as much as it deserves, which has brought on the sale of the car.

Being a huge Jaguar fan, the XK8 has been a pleasure to own - it’s effortless to drive and extremely smooth.

Gaynor is no stranger to owning Jaguars. Having owned previous models, it has to be said that this one has been Gaynor’s favourite, and if it weren’t for spending so much time abroad, the car certainly wouldn’t be going.

Exterior

The long, elegant XK8 is firmly in the modern classic category now, it is after-all, 24 years old.

Wheels and Tyres

The original five-spoke wheels are in good condition; there are a few minor marks, but nothing a mobile wheel refurbisher couldn’t address. The tyres are Pirelli and Bridgestone, all of which have a good amount of tread remaining.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the Jaguar is in good condition; there are a couple of minor dings to mention. One is in the bonnet and possibly caused by a stone; the others are in the boot lid, where there are some dents from the inside out. These were caused by a set of golf clubs that didn't quite fit as expected by the previous keeper. These dents aren’t that noticeable and have to be caught at the right angle to spot them. The rest of the car is in good order with good shut lines.

Paint

Finished in "Carnival Red Mica", the paintwork presents well. Some paintwork has been carried out to the rear aches, which is a very common area for corrosion. This work was completed approximately three years ago and still looks fresh.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in good condition and appear free from any noticeable scratches. All windows operate as they should via the switches and when the roof operates.

The convertible roof is in very good condition and just has an odd few crease marks in keeping with the age and mileage of the Jaguar. This operates as it should, going both up and down without hesitation.

All the lights are in good condition, with no splits or cracks in the lenses.

Interior

Ivory leather trim is a lovely contrast with the Carnival Red exterior.

Seats and Carpets

Fully electric seats are trimmed in Ivory leather; there is some wear to the driver's bolster in keeping with the car's age. The passenger seat is in good condition, and the rear seat has a small split in the base. Both door cards are in good condition with no noticeable scuffs or damage.

The carpets are clean and tidy, and a set of factory mats are in place. Inside the boot houses the warning triangle, space saver spare wheel, wheel brace and jack. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition, and the walnut fascia has no signs of any damage. Showing on the odometer is ~63,741 miles, and no warning lights are displayed when the car is running.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with the original wood/leather steering wheel, this is in good order with minimal signs of wear to the leather, whch we would say matches the age and mileage of the XK8.

Mechanics

With ~290BHP on tap, the 4.0-litre V8 was the first V8 to come from Jaguar, and it doesn’t disappoint.

Engine and Gearbox

Looking around the engine bay of the XK8, there do not appear to be any leaks. The XK8 engine fires up from cold first time, which can be seen in our Mechanical review video, and sounds fantastic.

Out on the road, the Jag pulls well through the gears, and the change is so smooth you can hardly tell it's changing. There are no untoward noises heard coming from the transmission or drivetrain.

Suspension and Brakes

As you would expect from Jaguar, the ride is super smooth, and the XK8 soaks up the road easily, providing a reassuring feel in the bends with no excessive body roll.

Bringing you to a halt, the brakes are working as they should, stopping the car in a straight line and with no juddering reported to be coming through the pedal.

The Drive

If you had to use one word to sum up driving the XK8, it would be effortless! The car is really smooth on the road, performs very well and is a great car to be in, especially with the roof down. If you get caught in a shower, it is a button press, and the roof is back up.

Electrics and Other

Everything inside the car is reported to be working just as it should. All the switchgear looks to be in good order, with no wear to the lettering on the buttons. The factory-fit unit is coupled with the boot-mounted CD multi-changer and satellite navigation.

One thing to note is that the boot can only be opened with the key, not the button. This has not been an issue for Gaynor and hasn’t been investigated.

Just over ~5,000 miles have been covered in the XK8 in the past 10 years, the car coming to market from ~13.5 years ownership and just 3 former keepers before this.

This low mileage example comes with several invoices dating back to 2007 showing the car has been serviced on mileage. The last service was carried out in January 2022, approximately ~500 miles ago. An MOT was carried out on 08.02.2024, and it passed with no advisories.
