Introduction

Glynn Parry
Professional Consigner and Photographer

Step back in time with this charming barn find, owned by the same family since new.

The Mini was one of Britain's most iconic cars and a vehicle that revolutionized vehicle design, as well as exerting a significant influence socially, culturally, and mechanically for years to come. The Mini's space-saving transverse engine and front-wheel-drive layout, which allowed 80% of the area of the car's floorpan to be used for passengers and luggage, changed the approach of car makers for future generations and firmly established the Mini in the annals of British automotive history as a true timeless classic.

Launched in 1959, sales of larger cars had slumped due to petrol rationing stemming from the Suez oil crisis, leading to smaller cars gaining popularity. Fun, funky, and perfectly on-trend for the era, several thousand MK1 Minis were produced, ready for purchase as practical, smaller cars became increasingly desirable. The Mini is extremely versatile and practical for day-to-day motoring while also capable of excelling in racing with its go-cart-like handling.

This particular example is a bit of a rarity, having been stored in a garage for close to ~40 years, importantly it was only parked up due to a lack of use. It belonged to the vendors granddad, receiving the car from new as a retirement gift. The car has clearly been well cared for when it was in use, the engine still turns over on the starter motor, and elements like the lights are still working to this day.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glynn after meeting Chris the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

An iconic classic that needs little introduction, we used to use the car to transport the grandparents around the village.

Having been in Chris' name for over ~40 years, the Mini has been cherished by the family since new. It was originally acquired by his wife Jeans granddad, when he was given the car as a retirement gift from the farm he worked for. He used the car for some time, before it was put in his wifes name. Some ~40 years ago, the cars registration was moved again to the current keeper Chris, and the car used very little since then.

Chris did initially keep the car running on a regular basis, as mentioned the car was parked up in working order, however since then the car doesn't seem to have been fuelling properly. He thinks this is likely due to the fuel pump, but this would need to be verified. Having had the Mini stored away for several years now, the time has come to let it go to an owner who can bring it back up to its former glory. Chris will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the Mini in the comments below.

Exterior

External door hinges, moustache grill, these early cars are iconic and this car retains originality.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with what are likely the original steel wheels on all corners, the condition shows marks and signs of corrosion. The hub cap is not fitted to the nearside front wheel, but is pictured on the rear seats.

The Monarch tyres will of course likely require replacing considering their time spent deflated and stored in the garage. Take a closer look at the exterior gallery section for a detailed view of the wheels and tyres on the car.

Bodywork

The Austin Mini will require a closer look at age-related bodywork issues where restoration may be needed. The boot section shows an area where the battery has corroded and likely caused a hole in the panels. Some signs of corrosion are apparent, notably by the front headlights, side skirts, boot, doors, and roof edges.

We have provided more detailed observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to review all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The maroon paint finish is a classic colour for one of these. With a good level of care and attention, and a likely respray, the Mini could really be a lovely example.

Again, we have taken high-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from different angles to present the car as you would see it if you were standing there. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The main glass sections appear free from major chips or cracks, and feature sliding windows you see on the early Mk1 Minis. The chrome trim overall as to be expected will require restoration to bring back its former glory. There are clear signs of corrosion on the chrome work, although the original features and badges appear to be in place.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review the video. We take you across all the areas of the car as if you were standing there yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail what work may be required for the Mini.

Interior

A time capsule, still retaining original features like the magic wand gearstick and door pull cables.

Seats and Carpets

The seats in the Mini are finished in brown vinyl. The seating sections appeared to be in a respectable condition, especially considering the age of the car. There are marks and creases on the vinyl covers on the front driver and passenger seats, and some small rips to the lower back sections. The rear seats looked in good condition.

The carpets in the Mini do show their age and will likely require refurbishment. Please refer to the interior gallery for more detailed images and an overview of the cabin section.

Dashboard

The dashboard retains its originality and has maintained its era-relevant features. In general it looks good but the paint has cracked and is peeling on the switch plate. The dials, controls, and finishing are of a good standard, with no major scratches on their presentation. We could not test if they were fully operational, but we noted that after connecting a power source, the ignition light was illuminated, and the dial needles flickered, including oil pressure, as highlighted in the mechanical review video.

Our interior gallery section takes you through some closer images of the Mini's dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with what is most likely to be the original gearstick and steering wheel, they both show signs of wear, also seen on the handbrake, as pictured.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and examine the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

Straightforward engineering and simple maintenance are just some of the reasons this timeless classic continues to captivate enthusiasts worldwide.

Engine and Gearbox

As mentioned previously, the car was parked up due to a lack of use rather than any issues. We were able to turn over the engine by hand and with an external power source connected, were able to turn over the engine from inside the car with the starter motor working freely.

Take a look over the mechanical review video to hear a little more about the mechanical checks we carried out whilst visiting the car.

Suspension and Brakes

Due to the car not yet being ready for the road, we were unable to take the car for a road test and test the suspension or the brakes.

We cover the underside of the Mini in our 'Mechanical gallery' section. Head over to our video section where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself. We take you around the mechanical elements of the car and give you an overview of what's on offer here.

The Drive

The Mini is an epitome of automotive originality, blending compact size with great looks. Despite its modest appearance, this iconic vehicle is famed for its nimble handling and responsive steering.

Whether zipping through tight corners or navigating city streets, the Mini exudes confidence and charm, capturing the essence of pure driving enjoyment with every twist and turn.

Electrics and Other

The electrics in the Mini are relatively simple and represent the minimalist stylings of the era. The headlamps and lenses appear without major damage noted.

We were able to check that the indicator lights were working, amazingly including the notification light on the end of the indicator stalk. Of course we were unable to fully test the electrical system due to the engine not running when we visited the car, and as mentioned previously, Chris believes the fuel pump is no longer working which is stopping the car from running.

History and Paperwork

Cars don't get much more original than this one, family owned from new with just 2 former keepers on the logbook, parked up for some ~40 years in the garage, this barn find is begging to be restored and put back on the road.

The 1964 Austin Mini is a true classic with a large amount of potential ahead of it. It has bags of originality, and features like the outside door hinges, moustache grill, sliding windows and magic wand gearstick that enthusiasts look for in a Mk1 Mini. It comes to market from ~40 years ownership, but has been in the family since new.

Ultimately, the Mini will require an extensive amount of restoration work carried out on it. There are signs of corrosion as well as not being able to fully test the engine capabilities or take it out on the road. Ideally this is would make for a really rewarding project for an enthusiast with an appreciation for the Mk1 Mini.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle. Chris will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.
