Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

A unique blend of dynamism, intoxicating performance and Italian styling.

Are there many other brands where exclusivity and racing pedigree go hand in hand with Italian style and charm? Based on the first of the modern Maserati coupes; the original 1998 3200 GT, which brought the company back into the limelight, guided by the able hands of Ferrari. Released in 2001, the 4200 carried over the momentum from its predecessor, with significant advances in its structure and mechanical attributes, and the notable use of a Ferrari-developed naturally-aspirated 4.2-litre V8. Crafted by Giugiaro, it leans heavily on Maserati's illustrious past. A practical and lavish Grand Tourer with a hand-finished interior, it's tastefully appointed both inside and out. Driving a Maserati 4200 is a genuinely immersive experience, accentuated by that unmistakable high-pitched scream of the V8 and the sharp driving feedback. It really is a stand-out alternative to the norm.

This 2003 Cambiocorsa (automated manual) comes to market from ~4 year ownership, and is specified with the full carbon fibre interior kit, MSP, 18” Grigio Mercury alloys, Skyhook suspension, cruise control, and premium audio. It has an excellent service history with no sign of heater matrix leak, a clean bill of health on the subframe, a clutch wear reading of 65.29%, recent brake discs/pad replacement, two keys, and an MOT valid until 08.04.2025.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The car is joy to drive, the handling and engine noise are intoxicating!

David bought the car ~4 years ago from a Maserati specialist and has added around 6,000 miles initially using it as a commuter car. Captivated by the intoxicating sound of the engine, as well as its cruising ability, it is part of an impressive collection of classic and performance cars he owns.

As he has to balance the storage and use of his other cars, he has decided to sell the Maserati and so it comes to market with us. David will be happy to answer and questions about the car in the comments section below.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

Its eye-catching red colour suits the contours of the 4200's styling and highlights its positive condition.

Wheels and Tyres

The 7-spoke 18” Grigio Mercury alloys were refurbished in 2014 and retain a pleasing presentation with just a minor nick noted on the offside rear wheel.

The car is fitted with a full set of Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres. All from 2017 and show plenty of even tread.

Bodywork

The exterior presentation is positive, with no significant blemishes or dents spotted, aside from some aluminium corrosion on both door mirrors. There is some slight evidence of age coming through on the lower arch inner lips. All doors open and close without issues, and the panel gaps are consistent.

The car's structure appears to be sound throughout, with no issues noted on the floor pan, chassis rails, inner wheel wells or engine bay. There are mild signs of age observed on the subframe but appears to be solid.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint finish has a decent lustre with some hazing noted, but overall offers a consistent red hue. There are a handful of stone chips on the nose of the car but they do not appear to have penetrated the base coat. The rear bumper has a good colour match but has a slightly flatter paint finish and the nearside rear arch has a treatable scuff but otherwise, the rest of the car is remarkably free of marks.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all free of chips, with a little lamination damage noted on the top left-hand side of the windscreen. All have good seals and both door glass-drop functions operate as they should.

The nearside headlamp cover shows signs of age, but all of the other lights and lenses appear to be decent. The trim and brightwork are in good order.

Interior

The cabin is tastefully finished with leather and a subtle use of carbon fibre.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather seats are in good shape. There are mild marks noted on the driver's side bolster and the tops of the rear seat headrests. The passenger seat adjustment button is missing in the photos but David has reported that it still functions intermittently, he told us it works better after a reset but is not consistent.

The carpets have worn well, with no notable damage or fade. All were bone dry, including the boot.

Dashboard

The leather dashboard with red piping has been well preserved, with no signs of wear or damage. The facia is neatly presented, although there is some evidence of the common sticky plastic syndrome. The good news is that this is mainly confined to the vents and a few centre console buttons.

The binnacle and dials are cleanly presented, with a reading of 66,326 miles on the odometer at the time of our visit. All of the functions, including the air-con are said to work. The door cards and roof headlining are in good shape and the rest of the interior trim is above the expectations of a car of this age.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel presents well and is free of any significant marks, just a shine to the leather that is to be expected with age and use. The car uses a paddle shift system, along with gear selector in the centre console as pictured.

Mechanics

The Maserati has a focused drive with a superb V8 soundtrack.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start did not present with any problems, the engine didn’t emit any unwanted noises and the dashboard lights all remained off as the car idled. Any exhaust condensation soon cleared up, with no signs of unwanted smoke or leaks on the day. The engine was smooth on tick-over with no undulations.

The engine presentation is always special in Italian supercars, and the crackle-finished aluminium V8 is no exception. The hoses and ancillaries are in good condition. The car is fitted with the Cambiocorsa transmission, which was demonstrated to work well with no hesitancy or slack, the last reading for clutch wear was ~3,000 miles ago showing ~65% as pictured in the invoice section.

Suspension and Brakes

Optioned with the Skyhook suspension from new, there were no notable creaks from the suspension during the test drive, the car was driven in comfort mode and absorbed the road conditions without any complaints.

The brakes have been very recently renewed, so their action was problem-free.

The Drive

David was careful not to over-demonstrate the true talent of the car, but it meant we could assess its touring abilities around town and a brief blast along an A-road. As a Grand Tourer, the car's talents lay in its refined drive and David demonstrated how sharp the steering felt, with no negative feedback.

The ride was compliant and the car felt planted on the road, with no unwanted noises heard from the wheels. Upon acceleration, the engine sounded glorious and didn't miss a beat, with no hesitancy or rattles, just the glorious combo of resonant smoothness and howling exhaust tone. There are no reports of low oil pressure or engine temperature problems.

Electrics and Other

The car is fitted with the MSP (Maserati Stability Program) which combines the Skyhook active suspension and anti-lock brakes, which not only aids the driver at speed but also acts as a useful failsafe when driving normally.

The car was specificed with the full carbon fibre interior kit from new, premium audio and also has a cigar lighter operated air pump bottle.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~4 year ownership, the car has been maintained by main dealer and reputable specialists since new, comes well spec'd from new with Skyhood and MSP along with a beautiful interior that has lasted well with touches of carbon fibre trim.

First registered in August 2008, the car comes with a detailed service history, with much of the stamps coming from Ferrari/Maserati specialists Giallo, who have known of the car since 2012. Aside from a comprehensive service history up to 2021, it also comes with evidence of work by Giallo to the steering, brakes and clutch, with additional sundry work to sensors, oil pipes, boots, bushes and air-conditioning.

Work totalling £1,700 on the brakes has just been carried out. It comes with two keys, and an MOT to April 2025.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
